There's 4 of us. I'm a South African though I grew up in Zimbabwe. The connectivity in Zim has gone backwards in the last 15 years to the point where I didn't even bother trying to log in the last time I was there in May. But... when it's hot and sunny and the beer's cold and the meat is on the braai who cares.

I'm from South Africa.
I wish we had better connection infrastructure. My wireless broadband lags to the point where fleet operations are disrupted. I might switch to ADSL sometime but that is also mostly satellite based.

Well, it was like $80-90 here around 3 years ago . Now it's better though but the infrastructure still sucks bad in most areas. I live in Greece btw.

Edited by: DeLaBu on 04/12/2008 09:28:12 Errr, a bit more than four from South-Africa, really. We have around six (or is it seven?) South-Africans in our corp alone.
It is a bit tought, though. Lag's a bit more than what Europeans and Americans are used to. And it's hard operating the mouse, keyboard and beat off the elephants and lions at the same time. But, somehow we manage.

Im also one of the corp members with DeLaBu in South Africa. The wild animals here are a huge frustration, we need to wrestle them off constantly to get our mouse back. . Apart from our corp I know about a few people just in 1 city playing the game.

Weirdly in Egypt this fact makes me Russian.

Originally by: Ticondrius ISS, eh? Let's see...1026ms ping, one way, just to get to earth at radio's light speed transmissions, + normal lag of about 200-400ms, taking on another 1026ms for the return...
If you played EVE on the ISS, you would have a ping of around 2500ms on the BEST of conditions. Also, you're orbiting the Earth so fast, that you would either need to add in a lot more lag for satellite relays or endure Dis/reconnects every 8-12 minutes.
If you did play from the ISS, I highly recommend that you never undock.
Fail. Lol, the ISS is not on the moon. It orbits at a height of about 350km. A lightspeed transmission needs around 1ms to bridge that in the ideal case of the station being directly above the reciever. Of course things aren't as easy, considering the ISS orbits the earth like 15 times a day, so you'd have constant reciever station switching. Without some serious internet trickery that'd make playing from up there impossible. But not due to the ping. |

South Africa is above the rest of the continent in terms of web connection. In countries like Ivory Coast, Senegal, Angola and many others, it's very hard to get a decent connection. I imagine playing EVE in those places is a hard task to achieve. If you compare Africa's technology infrastructures to any other continent, you will see they are way bellow the avarage. But things are changing, at least in places I know better, like Angola. A lot of money is being spent to improve technology and comunications infrastructures.
But it's always lame to see people talking about Africa like it's the lost world. I live in Europe btw. |
