Back in issue 136 of EDGE magazine (one of the UK's leading multi-platform gaming magazines) the magazine did a feature about the development of Final Fantasy XI in the two years following its launch.
Following this article I wrote a thank you note to EDGE to say how happy I was that they had featured an online game that had evolved since its launch and I also pointed out that this was something that applied to many games - and particularly highlighted EVE as a fine example.
I also suggested that an article about how MMOGs evolve would be of interest to EDGE's readers.
Anyway forward 2/3 months and I get the latest copy of EDGE and heh presto there is an article about the development of MMOG's with EVE featuring prominently!
CCP I demand that you instantly take me on as a paid employee to do your PR as I am obviously bloody good at it
Seriously though here is some scans of the article which people may find interesting. Enjoy - and go buy EDGE

Nice. I like the way the map looks in there, looks like a far smaller part of 0.0 was actually claimed by allainces and part was still open ^_^ ---------------------------

Citizens demand updated map. and less WoW art. Pretty decent though, for a fluffy overview of the genre.

Edited by: Shamis Orzoz on 14/07/2004 00:08:13 EvE clearly needs more advertising. They must be afraid that too many users will take down the servers. That's the only explanation for the complete lack of advertising.

Well recently in 'The History of Gaming' book free with PC Gamer they quoted EVE as a dead dodo devoid of players...
So having more people on 1 server than ever before in gaming is a dead game?!?!?!?! 9k+ peaks regularly with a community not divided by silly difference in Servers is a dead game?
Memo to Self, never buy PC Gamer again --------------------------------------------------------------

compared to other mmorpg's that have over a dozen servers with 6k players on average per server it is.

Which still is the best way of advertising a game that you'd like to keep something special, instead of something catered to the masses. I don't mind having 40-50K subscribers only, Eve is not your run of the mill MMORPG, careless advertising will bring in the masses used to Everquest and Ultima Online and such, which might just ruin the game thru the development mechanics described in this very article.
Eve is a niche title, growing more general already but essentially not for the masses of casual gamers that like the straight and simple games that hold your hand untill you reach Lvl X. I like that about it.
edit: oh and give Hardin that PR job plz, he's the right guy for it it seems, just a bit overzealous at times _______________________________________________

Memo to Self, never buy PC Gamer again
Thats odd the last issue of PC Gamer had more eve-online links than the eve-online web site... they even had a dedicated page (again) about a battle that occured.
I would quote but can't remember exactly what they said but it boiled down to the fact that when there not busy the guys at PC Gamer play EvE.

LMFAO well that just shows how much they have a clue then when they stick a book into their mag that places a game they apprently play into the reject bin....
As for the comment about it not having as many players as other games...well eat **** a million flies can't be wrong right?! Quality NOT quantity, plus having more players on its one server than any of the others does still means you interact with more people --------------------------------------------------------------
