not sure if it has been mentioned but i think beginning of 2009 a mew sci fi mmo called earthrise will go into beta.
kinda eves lil brother. territorial conflict, full loot, pvp centric, skills that train offline but not in space, rather earth of the future.
no idea if it will be any good but they have the right ideas imho.

I remember Face of Mankind having a harsh death penelty. I think it even had permadeath if u were unlucky enough to die without clone insurance. Could have been a real good game that. Alas was not to be.

Originally by: Sheriff Jones Blizzard had permadeath in diablo, was very fun. Hardcore was the only way to roll.
If only Diablo was an MMO and relevant to the discussion.

I just have a hard time seeing how a fantasy world setting can contain a "harsh" death penalty without turning into "ganker vs. ganker heaven".
We normally say that the only place in EVE that you are safe is within a station but that is not completely true. You are also completely safe when cloaked up in a deep space location or, more importantly, when in warp. So when you are traveling around you are in fact invulnerable most of the time.
With the wonderful Exploration system and missions located in deadspace complexes there is good opportunity and safety for people with a mindset focused on acquiring valuable resources or making quick ISK killing NPC's and get unique modules to venture into areas of "unconsensual PvP".
I don't see how this kind of safety can be provided in a ground based world where any location by default is accessible to anybody. As such, I can not venture outside the city gates unless I'm interested in fighting other people off. And as doing any other activity than preparing for battle makes you vulnerable to attack, there is simply little motivation for doing anything besides that. ---------------- Mr. Science & Trade Institute

Originally by: Icarus Flame Infinity: The Quest for Earth will, if it ever comes out, have a harsh-ass death penalty from hell. The main admin guy started a poll thread on the forums about what sort of death penalty the community wanted the game to have. The options were something like this:
-No penalty: WoW, etc. -Light penalty: Loss of items, with partial insurance. -Harsh penalty: Loss of most items, no insurance. Have to wait for another character to pick up your escape pod. -Light permadeath: You lose your character, but can have another character inherit your stuff. No skills/xp in the game, so not sure if this is a penalty unless you have a really cool name. -Harsh permadeath: You have to start from scratch. Holy crap that would be intense.
The funny part was the admin describing Eve's death penalty as "light". Most of the thread was voting for harsh/light permadeath. WOOWOO!
That will probably work for a short time. Once the devs realise that numbers are not what they'd hoped for, they'll drop the permadeath and go for a lighter option to rake in the carebears for more income. Probably the

I think those who voted for the harsh permadeath probably didn't realise what it would cost them to be at war with someone and get killed over and over. Also newer players will be killed by vets and leave if they feel that they can never compete. Just look at the complaints from new players on Eve about not being able to comepete with veterans. In Eve, you don't lose all your skills if you keep your clone updated and you can actually compete quite quickly due to the lvl5 max on everything.
Imagine what permadeath and starting over every time you got killed in Eve would do to the playerbase You wouldn't have to worry about lag or blobbing ever again. There probably wouldn't be enough players left to create a blob with.

I think that a harsh permadeath could potentially work for an MMO. It all boils down to how you define death, and how often the game mechanics allow that to happen. In Eve, I can see permadeath being an option after poddage, as long as you adjusted the game mechanics to allow for podding in only very rare cases. Permadeath from ship loss would require such a revamp of current mechanics that it would kill pvp as we know it. However, if Infinity happens to work in such a way that ship loss is this rare, we might see it work out.

Diablo 2 Hardcore.
Dead ? Dead !
Quote of the original manual free translated to English [only got the German one here]:
"Blizzard won't and even can't restore dead hardcore-characters. Don't even ask. La-la-li-la-la-la, we can't hear you .... "
Maybe not a MMORPG but sill a MORPG.

Well technically it was. Just 8 man instances, but still.
If EVE ahd a hardcore mode with apt prizes for doing so, i'd go for it
