At about 5:30 a message from my norton software popped up saying that infostealer.gampass had been found on my laptop. Just wanted to post and ask if others have had this same thing. From it's name I had a pretty good idea it steals your game login details, doesn't take a genious. Googled it and it is known to steal login's for online games.
Also I dont use cheapisk4ufromchina.com or any other cheating sites before anyone makes claims. The only sites I had used for many hours prior were well known Eve related sites and forums, so don't know if I could have gotten it from their. Don't download crap, don't click on links that I don't know etc.
Anyways just thought Id ask if others have had this today and think it's a good time to make sure your security is up to date.

If you haven't executed any infected files yourself then it might be that your Operating System / Web browsers / Plugins might not be updated to latest version.
One of the common ways to distribute malware is to infect so called "trusted source" by hacking their website and then distribute the malware to visitors by using known vulnerability in any of the above programs.
Also if your computer has no firewall (or misconfigured) then it might be possible to infect the system by just the fact it's connected to Internet. Once did the mistake that installed XP while having it connected to Internet and it was infected before I was finished with the installation.
If you're truly paranoid then you could wipe everything off the hard drives. Atleast there is no chance of hidden backdoors or such. Changing all your passwords (including email password) would be good idea.

Not to add to your woes, but honestly: this. Before you do anything, purge Norton from your system (and, if you can, from the world).

Second this Norton isn't worth the paper some of its rubbish documentation is printed on, much better free options out there that don't take control of your PC :) --------- Rally Against Evil Site[/center]

I would add as a caveat that you should take the original virus report seriously, and take action to remove it.
Right after you have done that, get yourself a decent bit of free AV software and google a decent guide on how to get rid of Norton. Once you try removing it you will know what we are all talking about (it can be done but it isnt exactly easy)

Changing your eve and other gaming related passwords from a non-infected PC should be your first priority.

I use AVG antivirus, I would love to hear peoples thoughts on it in this thread as to whether it's any good. I tried Norton once and hated it, practically tried to take over my computer as I think some mentioned here.

Edited by: Ticondrius on 08/12/2008 01:21:04 I like F-Secure myself. They have an Internet Security Suite too, and for a time it was the only way to get their home user AV app. Once they made the AV app available separately again, it's not so hard on PC resources anymore.
Also, in the support section, they have an activex version of their AV program, letting you scan infected PCs without installing anything.
EDIT: LOL @ the Linux reference. I would so be using Linux instead of Windows if only EVE ran NATIVLY on it. Cedega can go to hell. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PROPOSAL: Chaos Incarnate's Face MMORPG: Many Men Online Role Playing Girls |

Thanx for the replies, I did a full scan after I found out my security software had found something dodgey, did another scan again not too long ago just out of paranoia, nothing has been found. Passwords changed e.t.c. Looks like norton detected it before it could do any harm anyways which is good.
As for the comments on how bad Norton is, I have used many different programs for security and so far Norton has seemed the best for me. I always used to say I'd never use norton from what I had heard about it but as I can get it free thought it was worth a try and been happy since. As I say, the spyware/virus whatever, hasnt seemed to do any damage, removed automatically, so I am happy. Just thought I would bring it to peoples attention as it's obviously not just dodgey sites that you appear to get it from.
Originally by: Jason Edwards Shows you that you shouldnt download macros and run them.
Hahaha, yeah so that's where I went wrong
Or not. As I say, no dedgey sites, no dodgey downloads blah blah. Sadly I have to admit that all I had been running was Eve, and browsing websites to do with playing eve, killboard, forums etc.

I agree. I use AVG Free edition, and have for many years. And guess what, I have not had a visrus in many years :). There are som alternatives such as NOD32 etc, but I have no expereience with it.
