Just modify them slightly.
Fairy -> Fae (or Fey, or Fay, or Faeriełthe more traditional, even correct, names) Pixie -> Pix, or Pyskeą or if you're creative Pixae
Look up the words in Wikipedia and you'll have a wealth of knowledge (if you haven't already done so).
You're really on the right track with the mythological route (most EVE names have mythological consistency), but you want to avoid any and all pop culture references. "Fairy" makes people feel giddy and pink; it's an overused and abused pop culture term, and that's not something you want to name your ship. "Faerie" is more venerable and is closer to the original words root, but it keeps your meaningłin fact, it does your intent with more justice. Same thing with Pixie.
As for the non-aggressive thingą well, in the real folklore faerie would steal people's babies in the middle of the night and replace them with hollow, soulless formsłthese were changelings, or "fairy children." In the end, faeries ranged from being mildly annoying (giving you bedhead) to horrifically malicious (stealing newborns). Generally, communing with metaphysical entities was something you did with kid gloves, if at all. So if you really want non-aggressive, fairies is not the place. But it's your choice, and personally I think it's appealing. Again, wikipedia is your friend.
You may want to consider naming them after the Muses, if you want to add a ninth ship. And that would fit in your Nymph theme (they were Nymphs after all). That's more-or-less non-aggressive.
But overall I like the names. Just change/modify Pixie and Fairy.

I use wiki extensivly with naming ships, gallente and the minmatar give me a run for my money with mythos based names. Caldari is easier looking up bird families. Amarr isnt to hard to think of a few good names for them still but quickly running out of obvious names. But these are the 24th though 27th ships ive designed for eve, the other 23 still hanging around somewhere all with names and waiting paint jobs.

So what ever I grab from the color wheel/delta this is the best I can manage for now until I find the plugin for the cube slider controls instead, if you look at all of my previously colored ships and artworks they all exhibit this 'cartoon' apperance. I am sure if another artist with proper tools and knowledge went back and recolored these to be more in eve colored styles it would draw far less wow comments.
Second off about the shape, arent the elvan ships in warcraft have slopped pair of sails but fairly normal boat constuction? Dunno I havent seen a elf ship since wc2 but Im pertty sure they are similar to sloops.
My ships feature a single parallel sails are alot differnt and more inspired from larger european vessels and the forward bows reach down to the waterline a big no no for most above surface sailing ships. I also styled in greek temple/gothic assests on several of the ships and this really sets it apart from mostly every other fantasy and actual ship I know to date, and to my knowledge only one other science fiction ship uses the same concept of greek temple architecture built into the hull.

Names... meh. names can be changed.
The color palette? To say that Corel Painter isn't 'technical enough' is ridiculous. But that's not the problem here. It's not about 'realistic' tones. It's about your basic color choice. Brown and yellow/gold etc. just reeks of fantasy art, particularly how you applied it.
The overall shape/design: they look too 'gothic' (a la WH:40K spacecraft, which I've never liked personally) and don't look 'techie' enough. They look like wooden boats in space. This isn't a good thing.
If you want to put 'sails' on something, then get a *lot* more reference and start thinking outside the traditional concept of 'sails' for 'boats' and start extrapolating on what might become sails for ##Star Ships##, which is what ships are in Eve.
Additionally you need more reference for mechanical design. The whole issue here is that you're basing your base geometry and shape on what appears to be wooden boats, and there are pretty much two pages of threads of 'do not want' with respect to that.
The Eve aesthetic is one of technology and ancient age (that is, very old, very refined technology, not low tech old stuff).
I'm being blunt because I think that you can improve and I don't want you to quit doing art. But if you want people to like your stuff, you're going to have to make a product that customers like. And that means listening to feedback and critique.
If you'd like, I can point out some technical books for drawing and so on to improve your skills.

What I'd like you to do is critique all four thumbnails and tell me what you like and dislike about each one, and then look at the colored ships and tell me if you think of them differently after seeing them in color, and why. Explain to me what colors you like, which ones you don't like, and why it makes you feel that way.

Well there are lot of things that prevents corel painter x from being the best GUI tool I ever used, its powerful in its own right but there are those annoyances. Like grouping not being obvious and sometimes does it sloppily, no blend to transperancy option either. As for the color part I dont have my coordinate typeset for color selection nor do I have the slider bars and recently used colors, if corel painter X did have these features obvious I would have used far more offwhite than 'gold' to get it sperated further the amarr standard color theme.

I did have a gander at the wh40k ships, and been thinking on how to further seperate future designs from most of them and the current ones, it seems the catholic church idea was taken long before I thought about the sister's religous background.

The sail is to function more as an attena, I do have about 20 alternatives inspired by kites, boats, and airplane wings but they would either lean it twoards agressive looking, looking more like something out of warcraft >< or starcraft's flower cascade style ships or not further clashing with the rest of the ship.
Quote: Additionally you need more reference for mechanical design. The whole issue here is that you're basing your base geometry and shape on what appears to be wooden boats, and there are pretty much two pages of threads of 'do not want' with respect to that.
This isn the first thread about soe ships, the pixie (smallest) had about a 6 page of positive reviews, more complaints about it looking like the brutix than anything and the usual troll comments, but thats not the point in this reply. My mechanical refrence Is a wooden boat, the whole idea was for some nostalgea, the sisters of eve are probably the only folks that may have some sort of idea a wooden ship might look like.
Quote:

Ive been told by few associates that they've seen concept art for terrans ships, and they do adopt the 'boat' apperance rather well. These ships by descprtion are very old themselves, just been repurposed for another mission now. The tech 2s look far more advanced and I somewhat regret not getting one put together before posint the tech 1 line.

I dont mind the bluntness it tends to get to the point quicker. I do listen to feedback and try to improve with every work I do, but rarely have I revisted older works and revised them to reflect what I've learned. My SOE ships had alot of thought into them, I got a large collection of lego parts for all sections of all 4 ships so for me to sketch out another combo would be lesser of a hassel than previous eve ships I've drawn.

Black and White Tempests
1, This tempest thumbnail ebbs me to say it was designed for the new republic fleets that are in the same style as the hurricane, Its compacted and sleeker design also further hails to the minmatar philosphy of warfare engagements. The shading further provides a good deal of depth presented and made with the ship. The only thing that irked me about the design was the forward lower section making it appear more gun shaped.
2, This tempest style is set apart from traditional Minmatar Ships from my perception, this is more in line with steampunk or that tachgoma tanks from GITS. It feels rounder and sturdier, the shaping suggests slower heavier speeds as well. Though a neat style to see a whole series of ship styled in this manner, this isnt matching the consumer needs of the minmatar fleets old or new.
3, Screams of old school magnet pole though the junkyard construct old republic fleet. The light frame and skinny build suggests speed but it takes away from its 'aggresive' factor thus ultimately it looks more like a hobby ship than the battleship its supposed to represent. However the amount of shading would seem that this ship is far wider than the original design, this can further the apperance if nimbelness.
4, Most in line with the current tempest designs, a mix of all traits that has made this ship a long time staple and a favored perference from semistremlined (for a minmatar) agressive, and sturdieness this tumbprint carrys the proper weight to claim itself to be a battleship, what I didnt like about it was the lack of depth, the ship feels shallow without the additional discolroations.
Colored
1. the 'leaf' coppered plated ship gives clashes with the idea that this would be the fastest of the four however the stronger yellows and reds ebbing would have been in tune had the texture not been leafed.
2. This raw ingot textured color application of shade and lighting further reinforces that this ship idea its a 'can' styled ship.
3. This ship feels most traditional with the rust colors the soft sand texture makes it seeminly more minmatar without needing to add further details, this is the where the color greatly furthers the orginal work IMO.
4. Seems the Ammatar are just as horrible at building ships as the mintmar are, the layered texture also throws off alot more details and drowns out the entire style this greatly takes out majority of the charateristics the original BW had.

Keep the design concept of the Oberon, scratch the first three, and redesign them without sails. They just distract from the design concept. I do like the combination between Galente and Minmatar that you seem to be going for.
Ignoring the sails, Id say its more gallente + amarr, with a slight Caldari undertone (due to the square bridge).
Gal + minmi gives the mach, which doesnt really look like this. EVE history

Ok, no more digs about WoW, I promise.
As for the color palette thing- just mix colors off to the side of your drawing. If you like a color then just make a swatch of it off to the side and then you can use your color picker (eyedropper) to instantly grab that color again later. You can do this with all the colors and then mix/match colors, or use doge/burn in photoshop to give you a wider range of shades in the same tone etc.
Use the digital stage just like you would real paint.
As for your critiques of my quick sketches- I agree with everything you've said. As for the color stuff, I just randomly applied some colors to each design. I didn't focus on a particular design and design colors for it specifically, and it came out very mis-matched eh?
I see what you mean about the lower forward projection of #1 looking gun-like. I think all I'd have to do is just delete the little black nose part of it and that would fix that right up. But see how a small detail like that will dramatically change the impression of a piece?
As far as your current design theme with the roman architectural themes, I'd say go away from that and try something else for the SOE stuff. You can keep it gothic and epic w/o resorting to pillars and such. IMO the Amarr stuff is pretty gothic looking in some respects. The Apoc is my favorite example. Something really grand about it's overall styling with it's brilliant gold finish. While I don't like the massive negative space in it's hull, I really like it's nose.
Anyway, I'd try doing some more designs, less pillars, less yellow/brown, and maybe take a look at conceptart.org for some inspiration.

I'll bite and hope you get space rabies...
Talent isnt given it's sought. I been often told my imagination goes well beyond my capabilities to present it so its been the number one driving factor for improvment, a year ago I couldnt do a true persective ship, had anatomy problems with humanish figures, I couldnt characterize drawn people to well, was unable to create fitting environments and subjects on cgi, and I certinaly knew a hell lot less about coloring in CGI than I do now.
I do not know of any sports star that has reached that status by being 'given' talent, I do not know many artists in any field that been given noritery because talent was 'given' to them.
In the three years I only phsyically meet one person who can draw better than me, and I've meet alot of people over the years in various countries. So having no critiquing outlet in real life and I have to rely on the idoicy of alphaism on the internet.
So if you in such a position to judge 'talent' where is your expertice in judging? your comment reflects your lack of talent of giving any proper critiquing, your inability to express your issues on simple subjects, and possibly your lack of talent to see beyond whats presented? Do you even know you have a problem in any of these areas?

Nova Fox returns to get slated once again on his drawings.
Agree with the masses tbh;
The names aren't great.
Colors are something else, muchly everything in space is gunmetal to some capacity - Even the Jove don't have solid gold ships.
Wibbly Wobbly Lines don't fall down but they don't exactly jump at you either. Fine for concept sketching at the end of the day, but I'd want vector based refining for a final draft. More control over shading and manipulation of layers with vector, you can really get refined and apply textures way easier.
- Now for some backstory jabs;
I think that an SoE ship would be a boring mangle of grey to be honest. They were lost at space and are reknown for humanitarian aid and exploration. They aren't high on the scale of technical advancement in the fact that... all they've managed is an improved probe launcher. They only ever buy Oxygen and Vitoc.
At best they're going to be flying a mix between a Moa and a Catalyst. Some dumpy little cruiser sized ship with all sorts of arrays and crap on it... but damn near no offensive design, a complete lack of design balance and no fancy features whatsoever.
Judging by the Organisation data on them, they tend to deal in Gallente shuttles - they're going to be from that general area. The designs in this thread stink of Amarr with their shiny, jaunty looks.
The SoE are generally religious though. Naming their ships after Pixies, Sprites and Fairies doesn't fit their demographic. They're going to have rather religious toned names, similar to the Amarr... but probably not quite so vengeful.
No doubt something along the lines of "Saint" "Savour" or "Refuge" will be more likely to come up, considering the SOE's charitable nature and religious overtones.
The SOE have no where near the base establishment to form a scientific capital ship either, they are not a venerable FLEET of explorers. They're just a ragtag bunch established in about 48 stations across the EVE universe. Comparing this to the Gallente or Amarr with obscene amounts of resources and space... the SOE are miles from achieving a capital ship, hell.. T2 is even a stretch.
Dumb down the ship designs into nothing but weak, fancy shuttles with enhanced exploration ability. Take away the gold, take away the fancy sails and prominent bridges... Then you may be on the right track. For now these designs are way too elaborate and shiny for the EVE Universe and would never in a million years be related to the SOE in their current capacity.

Im really not a vector man, I dont think in vector, I cant flow with vector, and ultimately I find the white boxes and lack of precision controls very annoying and most often counter productive when they are all so close to gether. Then again I think vector is a simplification tool, not a detailing tool. -

Now for some backstory jabs;
Take away the gold, take away the fancy sails and prominent bridges. Then you may be on the right track. For now these designs are way too elaborate and shiny for the EVE Universe and would never in a million years be related to the SOE in their current capacity.
Does Ore ships have mythos names? Does ore ships look anythings like dropped metal blobs? No they dont.
Charity work they do must be expensive especially on the scales of planet wide rescuses they've done in the past, so ther economic strenght has to be up there somehwere
Though religous they are no where near hardcore as the amarr, which allows them to maintain thier scientific approach espcially with data concerning the gate itself far more logically
Where in the hell do you get the idea that these ships are strong vs anything? Link in my sig clearly lines out thier 'civillian' roles.
If you actually read the discription for any of these ships youll find out that majority of these ships where once used in charity work, aka shuttle and supply transports including the capitol ship hosting as a mobile base of rescue operations.
