I was looking at the various kinds of target painters and can't help but wonder if there's a design flaw in the Target Painter II
Compare it with the Phased Weapon Navigation Array:
II / Phased:
Activation Cost: 24 / 16 Bonus: 30% / 30% Range: 30km / 30km Falloff: 60km / 60km act. time: 10 / 10 Meta Level: 5 / 4 Tech: 2 / 1 Prereqs: lvl 4 / lvl 1
The Target Painter II is inferior to its Tech 1, meta level 4 cousin. Can someone remove the shipping material that's stuck in the optics and get it up to what it should be?
(Or am i missing something obvious?) |

availability (supposedly)
named loot is "drop rate" dependant. T2 loot can be manufactured. If you check around about 80% of (top tier) named mods are same or better than t2 modules.

And while you're at it, compare the prices of the best named, and the T2 mod.
And the PWNAGE painter isn't named that way for nothing.

there are a lot of t2 mods that are pointless. Check out Armor Plates for example.
T1 is cheaper and easier to fit for same stats as T2.
Someone needs to go in and look at T2 vs T1 best named and give T2 some loving as much T2 gear has no point even existing. Man goes to the doc, with a strawberry growing out of his head. Doc says "I'll give you some cream to put on it." |

This is common to all EW. Meta 4 is equal to T2 in effectiveness, with other benefits. T2 is (theoretically) available and cheap. Plates are similar but worse, 1600mm RT gives a much smaller mass penalty, which is much bigger than the 0.8 cap/sec of a TP II vs a PWNAGE. -------------------- Originally by: Crumplecorn
I prefer launching bathtubs of antimatter at my opponents over pointing an open DVD player at them, even if the bathtubs do miss a lot. So no.

Thats the part I dont get, why train for t2 when you can get t1 mods that are better, doesnt really matter what kind of Mod, I dont mind mods that are above meta level 5 being beter than t2, but I have a problem with stuff below it being better. |

I actually find it interesting (good). It should really pay to read module info and not just search for the little yellow thing on the modules picture. I also don't think that t2 should be universally the better choice. I mean take launchers. Meta 4 is the best t1 launcher, but meta 3 has less strict fitting requirements. Lots of people use meta 3 to get a better overall fit on their ships. Nothing wrong.
Same way with EW mods. You get to option to either skill up to use less expensive fits (aka t2 mods), OR don't skill up and just use meta 4.
Personaly I both skilled up AND use meta 4.
P.S. Also made a killing a long time ago at the market before people realised the facts. Always nice to buy the meta 4 part for half the price of the t2 :)

Skilling to L4 usually confers other benefits like cap use, or locking up a support skill that makes the item like the painter more effective.

Does sig focusing affect named painters or only T2?

Sig Focusing impacts both, just as all ewar efficiency skills impact T1. However, in order to train Sig Focusing you need Target Painting IV, the requisites for T2.
As a result, it comes down to ISK, fitting and cap usage. If you cap stable and can fit, fit T2. If you need to tweak CPU or cap, then fit the named module.
