I have heard some about there beeing a blasterthon fitting for the megathon that does serious amount of damage, and I was also told you could do the same thing with a thorax.
However, I don't quite get why you would want turrets that do less damage, and have far less range over turrets where you can stay at a distance and blast away. I currently have 4x250mm carbide on my thorax, and I usually stay at 30km range picking off my npc targets while they can't hit me. If I get blasters, I have to get much closer, and I will get alot of damage as I have to deal with 4-5 ships at the same time.
I do realize that the blasters have higher tracking speed and fire rate, but I still don't see how this setup will let me damage more without getting seriously damaged myself.
My second question is how do I armor/shield tank? What kind of modules do I need to fit?
And finally, what kind of strategy should I use? Just have and MWD/AB fitted, blast in to close range while targeting and fire away?

Blasters do WAY more damage then rails. Yes you have to get much much closer with em. And against serpentis ( good bet your fighting them since your not getting hit at 30km ) you will take a lot of damage since they use blasters as well.
Blasterrax/thron armour tank. So will only comment on that. A blasterrax can armour tank against serpentis succesfully with 1x thermal armor hardner, 1x kinetic armor hardner 1x techII medium repairer. A setup that works for me against serpentis quite well is: 5x electron 1x mwd, 1x tracking comp, 1x webifier 1x med repairer, 1x therm hardener, 1x kinetic hardener, 1x relay 1x damage mod, throw out the damage mod for a relay if you have trouble with your cap.
You try to get as close as possible without using all your cap. Serpentis will usually help you with that since they wanna be at short range as well. The tactic basically kill everything as fast as possible so you don't take to much damage yourself.
Short range is a lot of fun, it's fast, but it's also very risky and hard to pull off, and requires some good skills equip and finger work. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

I have not really tried a blasterrax for ages, but, I do have a nice setup for a Dominix. It actually works better than the Megathron for this. This is due to it's slot layout that allow a faster cap-regen and better armortanking.
High: 6x Heavy Neutron Blaster 1
Medium: 1x LiF AB 1x Webber, best is the 90% fleeting. 3x Eutetic
Low: 1x Large Armor Rep 1 1x Medium Armor Rep 2 1x Kinetic Hardner 1x Thermal Hardner 3x Cap-Relay
With my skills I have 4800 cap and a regen of 191 seconds IIRC.
Remeber named items on the large armor stuff makes for even better tanking. Get a TEch II if you can affor dit and you'll be doing 1120 armor every 12 sec.
Use the drones to munch cruisers/frigates and keep the guns for the BS. Sometimes it is nessecary to use the guns on cruisers aswell to munch them faster and avoid too much damage.

Checked up a bit more, and I see the fire rate of blasters is twice that of hybrids, while not having half damage multiplier.
I don't have the skill yet for armor hardeners, so I tried without them, against some serpentis spawn. And I mostly got my ass handed to me. The only ammo I could find unfourtunatly was antimatter, so I had to be real close to kill them. Even so, turning on the mwd and blasting in to close range, I hardly hit a thing when I start orbiting my targets. And by then my shield is almost down and they start eating at my armor, and I have to retreat.
I will have to do some skill training and get those armour hardeners fitted.

Yeah.
Blasters always use antimatter, blasterrax is 2.5km orbit, can go closer but not while orbiting. Oh and use that mwd to aproach, once you start firing that mwd should be OFF.
Thorax has crappy shields, even crappier with a mwd, shields are a interesting stat for a blasterrax, nothing more. You tank your armour and rely on it to keep you alive, not your shields. Those hardners would have your armour last twice as long, quite worth the effort. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

You will hit better if you sit still. Unfortunatly EVE has decided to take into account your own movement even tough that would not apply IRL when the arget is webbed and pretty much immobile. Shame on them.
Sitting still makes you easier to hit too for them, but, they'll mostly hit you anyways unless you are orbiting with MWD on auto.
The hardners are very important to avoid taking too much damage.
Also, AM is the way to go ith blasters since you need to be close anyways. Also, use Ogres because serpentis are most sensitive to thermal damage so no need to use a mix of ogre/wasp.
Remember you falloff too etc.
I cant recall the optimal on electrons, but, I generaly the sweetspot is optimla + 25-50% of optimal for me. Sometimes it is using the unmodified optimal of the gun and not the actualy modified with the ammo, other times it's not. So testing is essential to find yoru sweetspot.
Web a target, set to keep at correct range adn blast/drone ti to death, then switch. -------------------------

If you are doing close range you need to know your boats and your limits. Because if the **** hit the fan you are going down.
Close range are more fun, loot is easier to pickup and did I mention it's more fun?

Yeah but ratting is there purely to make cash and possibly get decent items, if i want fun i do pvp ;) but for ratting, gimme easy and safer any day.
Long range also leaves u less vulnerable when ure ratting in low sec space. Id rather be 30-60km from the rats if a player pirate appears then sat next to a few cruiser rats ;)
Then again, caldari ships seem to be made for ranged fighting where as gallente ships have damage mods rather than range mods on ship skills so i guess gallente ships are a bit more flexible when it comes to combat strategies.

Seriously though, making "enough" ISK by NPC hunting takes some time, I would rather have fun by being close range than almost falling asleep at 75km range.

Well i fly a moa when im ratting and with my skills atm ( not even good skills range wise ) i get an optimal range of 27km using anti matter ammo :/ So id would be stupid not to use that range to my advantage :)
Low slots ive got 2xmagnetic field balancers and 1 tracking enhancer and ive got a tracking comp on a medium slot too, stuff drops like flies with my 4xcompressed coil 250mm rails :E

Judicator how big spawns can you take out alone?
I agree short range would be more fun and faster , but i doubt i can handle same spawns clsoe range as i do long range.
With my special long range i arrive to kill alone anything so far up to(including) 1x 1,5 milion, 2x 750 k and 4-5 inties.
I doubt i could do it short range.

True, long range on a megathron is boring as hell these days. You dont get hit at all, and all you do is wait till one BS is dead before switching your 7 rails to the next one.
I regularly run eve in the background and take a minute to post here while hunting, that tells u enough about boring.
But then again, I disagree about the isk. You can actually earn quite huge amounts if you take the trouble and have a long continuous time to spend on hunting. _______________________________________________

With that boat I have managed to take out 2x Guardian Enforcers with 4x Guardian Captians as support. That was before I slappe on 1 medium aswell an dI can tell you it got a bit scary because that combo does heaps of damage. Had to warp out and repair. Good thing I had loads of spare drones when I came back in.
With the the extra armor rep on I have not seen anything bigger than 2x Guardian Enforcers with inty/cruiser support. Saw a singel 1m tough, but he was only escroted by 4 patrollers.
I seem to mostly run into Guardian Enforcers and maybe Guardian Elder Executors, 1m, and that suits me fine. If I run into a 1,5 I'll decide if I try or not based on it's escort. -------------------------

Yeah, just depends whos trying. If its some noob in his first cruiser then they should definitly stick to long range fighting. Blaster setups do require much better skills and a certain ammount of experience too :) i dont really care about what setups they use etc etc, just as long as they dont come and whine about losing theyre first cruiser to rats on here :P

I fondly remember Shadowstrike MKI MII & MKIII (my first three attempts at running a blasterrax ) :D ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Close range are more fun, loot is easier to pickup and did I mention it's more fun?
WORD!
Incidentally, if you deck your ship up properly there's no reason why people can't take on 2.5 - 3m worth of bountied craft, solo. I can do 2 x Gurista Destroyers and assorted cruiser / frigates, solo.

Ive taken a 3.5mil elder guardian enforcer, 2x 500k executioner, and 6x interceptor spawn with large blasters/drones w/o to much hassle. It helps if you can get them to spread out. |

It's also faster. Once you close, combat's done in a minute, one way or the other.
I use Ions though instead of the electrons. I may switch though, given recent tracking changes.
I find a good portion of my damage comes from the drones though. 8 heavy drones and 5 blasters make for some sound pantsing of NPCs.
-- TomB: End the speed-race. 1 propulsion mod allowed, make turrets affect ship attributes like +speed/+ab speed +agil for progressivly smaller/lighter turrets, -speed/-ab speed -agil for long-range. |

I'm trying a new basterax setup which uses 5*light neutrons and a couple of tech 1 damage mods (i'm poor). Seems to be going quite well so far, since the tracking means I can just sit there and pummel any frigates which orbit me.
some guy in a moa jumped me at a belt, and I toasted him pretty quickly when he let me get in close. Not sure how I'd hold up going one on one against another rax though.

You would probably do quite well, i smoked a rupture in a vexor, with 4 150mm rails, armor tanked, with 600 skill points. Thats was pre patch and the rupture was still launching cruise missiles at me :o 2004.08.22 21:03:00 combat Your Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I perfectly strikes callonious [BSC], wrecking for 236.9 damage. |
