Just do a live action version of Clear Skies.
With Nathan Fillion as the cap'n and Felicia Day as the ship's voice.
And Jewel Staite as the eye candy.
OOh! And Eddie Izzard as that bad guy. I forget his name.

Like someone else said I'd feel a bit queasy if Hollywood got their hands on the Eve IP, not that I think the game has enough of a following to interest anyone in LA. I think if anything the IP is better suited for episodic video because of the sheer range of perspectives it allows for. We want to hear stories from the Amarr, the Gallente, Caldari, Minmatar, Serpentis, Angels, Guristas, Blooders, well... just go through the list.
Live action in any storytelling format is much less expensive to do convincingly these days with the great tools that are available, but still requires a budget that I'm not sure anyone in either the community or at CCP has. I would love to see live Scope newscasts or even digital shorts like were done for Halo 3. That way, variance in themes and character perspectives can be more fully expressed.

People shouldn't worry about Uwe Boll or someone getting his hands on the movie rights. CCP is privately owned, and as such completely controls the IP, if a movie is ever going to be made they're going to be damn sure that the right remain with them, and they will choose the directors etc.

Originally by: SharpMango An Eve movie could well work. It does not need to give the movie goer all of the mythology. Just a few key aspects. I think a great first eve movie would be the gallente-caldari war. the first one.... it could be made deeeply compelling. A democracy forcibly controlling a Hypercapitalist Oligopolistic society.. the audience wouldn't know who to root for?? Is it right for democrats to force freedom upon their citizens? what if one wants to live in a society with no real government, but just a series of companies? It would be fascinating i think. The eve chronicles do not try to give a definitive history of eve. rather they create several small glimpses of a hugely dynamic universe. Something like that is the way to go.
Lol what you guys find fascinating is fascinating. An eve movie that would work would have as its central element: Space boy meets spacegirl. Even Bladerunner was a boy meets girl flick. Thats what sells baby. "A democracy forcibly controlling a Hypercapitalist Oligopolistic society" - Sounds like Star Wars EPisode I to me.

Although I'd LOVE to see an Eve movie made, I too have reservations about the ability of Hollywood to translate the size of the universe into a flic 120 mins long. You'd need to focus in on a few protagonists and their interactions with the rest of Eve. It could be done, and even if the audience that is "in the know" would be small, a well done action/love story/whatever movie is always a draw given the promotion that Hollywood would throw at it. Can U imagine what would happen if suddenly 500,000 people signed up and started playing? Wrangler's head would pop!
I would also have a morbid fear of the opening credits looking like.... "A Long Time in the Future.. In a Galaxy Far Far away.... <que John Williams soundtrack> EVE WARS! It is a dark time for the Alliance... the Ebil BoB Empire has banded together with the Goon Consortium to wipe out all resistance to ..... (you can imagine the rest)"
But damn.. if it was well done .. it could be a thing of beauty..

Edited by: Mother Sheeana on 10/12/2008 19:16:52 Well I work for a large movie company played Eve for 3 years, and after the QR patch just striped my various scripts of anything related to CCP and if I do make it will not have anything to do with Eve anymore, nor will I in 13 hours as my last sub dies.
Nobody cares about Eve except the 250k people that play it.
CCP are not making enough money to risk them not going out of business before the movie is released, anyway that's I have been told since looking into to it, along these same lines is why EA or any other more solvent publisher was willing to take on the distribution of CCP repackage box product which might be resold if "Atari" aka Infograms implodes. It was a curse to take that Atari name, I worked for the original Atari, always bothers me that a french company just took the name and attempted to repackage themselves with it as it had nothing to do with the original.
No characters, the fiction is weak when you really break it down.
The game universe lacks any sort of human emotion on the screen during game play, I know we have lot sitting playing the game, but not on the screen.
Sorry this is harsh, but it's the truth, good luck! If they ever release walking in stations I will resub to waste a month trying it out!

Btw I don't think EVE's IP has the power that WoW or any other game out there has. I'm not holding my breath on this one. Sorry.

If a good script is written, it will be made.
It's CCP's decision as to whether one gets written or not.
Would it be good for EVE? Yes.

How about movies not based arond the whole of the EVE universe, but just on certain stories within it? I think many of the Short Stories, or even series of Chronicles, could be made into some very good film.
I for one would LOVE to see Ruthless. -------

You've got a lot of strikes against it. It's a movie based on a game. Nobody other than the subscribers really know anything about the background, and then only a percentage of those know it well.
That didn't stop the Rid**** movies. The Rid**** Trilogy is based on, I believe, Vin Diesel's old character he played in D&D. It's not a universe that the majority of the population is really familiar with, but the movies work. Granted, they aren't the most popular ever - but they were pretty good.
And what about Star Wars? Or Star Trek? Nobody knew anything about those universes before they were aired and look where they are today.
A series or a movie doesn't have to be so in-depth that only someone deeply immersed in the game could appreciate it. It could be a series of shows or movies that are merely BASED in the universe. You don't need to know the ENTIRE universes story to enjoy such a movie. You just let the audience know the background that relates to the particular tale.
I don't really like the idea of a movie. I'm just saying that these aren't really issues that prevent a tale in the world from being told in that way.
I would rather see something smaller budget that can cater more to the niche than a block buster movie. Perhaps something online. I'd pay to subscribe to a weekly animated serial. Or CGI serial. Something with more budget/effects than Red Dwarf, surely, but it doesn't have to break the bank.

Originally by: Kaisergeist It would be a long long movie. In fact, the first 13 hours of it would be dedicated to all the central characters training Frigate 3, only to realize that they need Frigate 4 to get into Cruisers. Then the main story arc will be centered around all of the characters spending 2+ hours jumping from station to station gathering up everything for their fitting. Only to climax with running into their enemies that are in full T2. They all get podded except 1 who got lucky and warped back to a station.
Or did he...
I smell a sequel.

There's a lot of confusion and weird assumptions in this thread.
If established fanbase were the only reason a movie gets made than most films would not exist.
Blade Runner was roughly based on a subplot of a novel that - as much as P.K. **** is a treasured niche author - probably was read by way less than 250k. And as brilliant as many PKD stories are - background was something he didn't invest a lot of work in. There are tons of other examples - some have been mentioned above. Neither the original Star Trek nor Star Wars were based on pre-existign work - but went on to become the biggest sci fi franchises in history. LOTR is the exception - not the rule.
Starting with a 250k base of fans is better than most movies.
The amounts of money CCP has or lacks is besides the point. There's plenty of studio budget looking for promising scripts to make successful movies out of. Same for TV series.
There is 0 need to waste hours with explaining the background. The story will be important and it will be about protagonists achieving something. EVE would only provide the backdrop and make some of the details special.
What is paramount is that the viewer can follow the plot - the backround stuff can be presented with quick intro (see Star Wars, Rid****), or some exposition.
Example: Movie starts with scene in a high tech museum. Pupils walk around and we see a series of holographic display showing some tidbits of EVE history. A teacher explains some stuff about the history of the EVE gate and Concord and mentions the 4 empires. (the whole thing takes about a minute- but viewers already know it's a scifi story about far future after humanity came here thousands of years ago - now isolated from earth). Suddenly there is a commotion outside and people get to the exits - only to see fireworks in the sky (ship wrecks burning up in atmospheric entry). "Camera" moves up the atmosphere to show us a battle going on in orbit.
Switching scenes to some government halls - dramatic music plays while the credits get display - we see somebody moving purposefully into a large chamber with a holographic display of the strategic situation - green and red dots show friendly and hostile fleet positions. We meet the first protagonists or 2 and a few minutes later have introduced several more main characters.
Within the first 10-15 minutes we know that we're in the far future, we met the main characters and know that a conflict is going on - while having a broad impression of EVEs background and looks.
Standard movie devices - nothing new here. This will all work fine - the important thing is to have interesting characters and a gripping story. And human motivations and conflicts are universal - doesn't need detailed knowledge of EVE background to follow a well done plot.
It could be an action adventure and/or a political drama with betrayal and backstabbing.
An EVE movie (or TV series - might be better) will be made if CCP and a studio can agree on a script and the studio is convinced that a sci fi movie will make enough money in current market situation to justify the necessary budget.
Having an established look and feel saves money as designers don't have to start from scratch.
Would a movie help the game? Of course it would. Even if the movie is of moderate quality it will make EVE better known to a larger audience. Plot was silly/crap - but background looked cool? Hey, heard there is a game behind the movie - let's have a look. And there is no way even a bad movie would hurt EVE. At worst it does not bring in a large number of new players - shrug. A bad movie won't make the existing players suddenly cancel their accounts.
