i went to the something awfull forums with the view of creating and account there so i could join the goons one day (heard forums was only way to get in scam free).
problem is they're looking for $9.95?
is this a pyramid scheme for them or how is this working?

that's the way it works at SA.the membership fee pays for keeping the servers running etc (and funds ebil goon plans throughout the gaming universes  )

I've always wondered what the relationship is between Goons and the SA Forums. Anyone want to fill me in (preferably without talking crap)?

Essentially a member of the SA forums is know on the rest of the net as a "Goon".
A member of Eve had the delightful idea of telling the Goons about Eve on SA, about how their love of trolling was a rewarded gamestyle in Eve.
The rest is history.

but really, why not? my history background? i left exe due to not liking the stfu noob climate they have. dunno if its different in goons but willing to try at least.

Yeah, joining the Something Awful forums costs $10, and Goonfleet only recruits from members of the Something Awful forums. Goonfleet isn't an 'official' Something Awful alliance or anything like that, its not owned or endorsed by the same people who run the SA forums (its run by people who paid their $10 to become a forum member like everyone else) nor does it get kickbacks or any other benefit from the people behind SA.
If you're intending to join SA just so you can join goonfleet, don't bother, you're missing the point. The idea of goonfleet is to recruit people who are already Something Awful members to play EVE and join Goonfleet, not to get existing EVE players to spend $10 on joining our corp.
Besides, goons are terrible at this game and can only win by cheating and exploiting, don't you read CAOD?

OP Just walk away calmly while you still can.
I love the goons, they bring some much needed hilarity to eve. All of my friends on SA ask if I have been getting owned by the goons everyday. I think they would be a fun to fly with and epic win in causing trouble, but the risk you take joining up with them is too great. Odds are they will scam you out of cash, ships, SP if they keep podding you, and finally send you back to empire humiliated(where you then come and shed sweet tears here for all of us to enjoy).
Just enjoy them for who they are, laugh at their antics, but never get too deep with them.

Unlike the Goons of eve, the Goons of SA wont rip you off; well, not the server admins :)
Your RL isk is perfectly safe; your $10 will get you an account with which you are free to post. They've been doing it for years like this; nothing to be concerned about.... read the wikipedia entry on something awful etc.

Goonfleet (not swarm) was originally members of the Something Awful forums who came over eve to muck it up (as they do to so many MMORPGs... (see the dancing *****es in Second Life etc) but as it turned out, they liked it :D Some stayed, some got bored and left. Goonfleet is where the SA crowd goes, along with special friends.... Goonswarm is the alliance and there's non-SA members in GS.
Real and proper goons, and in theory I'm one of them, having a SA membership dating back to 2000, are quite nice people. It's the morons that follow them around that give them a bad name to be honest.
I go on SA a few times a week as I do 4chan, and srsly, i actually DO do it for the lulz :D Most of them are normal folk, if a bit... "different".
Just don't **** them off (like, in a big way). 4chan has the party van... SA has... well... you'll find out :D
