I've been training like mad for the last few weeks, and I finally find myself sitting in my hangar spinning my spiffy new Falcon. At this point, I've realized one very, very important tidbit of information: I haven't a clue how to fly the little bugger. After setting off to these august forums in search of answers, I've realized yet another important fact: Eve is rife with its own brand of incomprehensible technical jargon.
Perhaps a few of you would be kind enough to point me in the direction of some Falcon resources. I have a reasonable idea of how to fit one, but I need some information on tactics and the like...with as little jargon as possible.

Lowsec? If so:
HIGHS: 1 x Covops Cloak II 1 x Recon Probe Launcher I 2 x Rocket Launcher II /defenders (If you have recon 5, 1 'Malkuth' at 4)
MEDS: 1 x Sensor Booster II 6 x Racial Jammers of various flavours
LOWS: 3 x Signal Distortion Amp II
RIGS: 2 x Particle Dispersion Projector I
Tactics: You want to be around 200km from the fighting. This means making bookmarks. This bit sucks. Get the fastest ship you have. Go to the place you want to make the jamspot from. Fly 200km from it, in a direction that has nothing you can warp to (otherwise people can jump on you by warping from that point). Bookmark that spot. Repeat for everywhere you want to be able to use your Falcon. Stations, gates, favoured bait belts, whatever.
The actual combat bit is easy. Wait for fight to start and warp scrambling to begin. Uncloak. Lock bad guys up. Turn jammers on. Ignore inevitable smacktalk in local. Decloak when bad guys all dead.
If they run? Drop a probe and scan 'em down if your gang doesn't include a covops to do that for you.
Someone starts spamming missiles? Defenders not gonna be able to take 'em all down before they reach you? Warp off then return.
If you have multiple bm's at the same location, you can just warp between these, which really annoys people.
It's that simple. Bear in mind everyone hates Falcons not in their own gang and will do nearly anything to kill one, up to and including suicide attacks.
0.0? Not really sure since I've never flown a Falcon in 0.0, but you probably want less emphasis on range and a MWD. "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" |

Stay as far from your enemy as possible, use jammers on them, if you get shot at, warp away.
If you and your mates tend to fly around the same space alot then invest the time in making some bookmarks (BM's), inty's or speed-fit frigs are good for this. Just orbit gates/stations at 150km at 4700 m/s. Make a bookmark every 40 seconds and you will have yourself a nice even-spaced pentagram of on-grid BM's. As you make the bookmarks name them [Name of Gate or Station] 1,4,2,5,3. Then, if you ever fight around that object, you can on-grid warp. From any BM, you can warp across the field to either of the numbers equal +/- 1 from the BM number you are current at, where 1 and 5 wrap around to each other (that is, from 1 you can go to 2 or 5, or from 5 you can go to 4 or 1).
This same BM strategy applies to many ship types, but the falcon benefits from it best.
Other than that little bit of advanced maneuvering, falcon tactics are very simple. Put yourself as far away as possible, jam with the best jammer to jam with at the time, and if you take some heat warp out and try to warp back in on a different approach, then begin jamming again.

A plate really kills your agility, I prefer an i-stab in the third low myself, although this may be different in 0.0 from lowsec.
To the OP:
Never stay uncloaked longer than the re-cloaking delay. Uncloak, lock targets, turn on jammers, recloak. If you succeed, they will remain jammed for the entire cycle anyway. Just wait for the cycles to finish, uncloak and repeat. That way you are only uncloaked for a few seconds every 20s or so, making it much more difficult for them to pinpoint your location.

i can confirm that a falcon was jamming my abaddon on station. he missed a jam, i locked him up with amarr navy microwaves in my tachs, and landed a killing blow in one volley with a little help from my fleet mates. i was quite pleased.

as a 0.0 falcon pilot myself, i can offer a few words of advice. 1 is that only plate if you are in a close range fleet. otherwise you are too damn slow to get away if a vaga or zealot comes bull charging you. second.. mind your surroundings. if you are in a small gang dont assume what you see is what the enemy has. for example, im sitting on a station providing support jamming for me friends on 2 battleships.. using up all my jammers in the process. as soon as i had fully committed a vaga warps in before i can unlock both and this happens
http://killboard.eve-doane.com/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=14219
its all a matter of situational support though... ive even seen an uber tank falcon be used as bait which was real interesting to see. but all in all sisi practice makes perfect :)

There are a lot of things to learn, but here are the two most important things to remember.
1. Never underestimate your ability to completely miss a jam.
2, and most important. Never, EVER underestimate your tank's weakness. You will explode on a whim.

Many ppl will argue that you should only use the falcon at around 200km range. Where youll need bookmarks etc and some1 to make 'em for you.
This sounds fine in theory, but in reality its a bit different. Alot of the time in your typical small scale pvp, youll have to engage at under 200km, sometimes even under 150km. Try to avoid this, but it will happen and you should be prepared.
How so? It comes down to the rigs youll use. I used to use only the ecm range rigs, to get past 200km optimal. However im not too fond of only one of these due to reasons highlighted above. If you use 1 augmenter rig (ecm strength) and 1 ecm range rig, you can provide a little more flexibility for the typical pvp scenario. Sure the augmenter may stack poorly with 3 sda's (I always use 3 sda's the extra strength is too importnat to give up), but the extra strength is still noticable and helps a great deal when your getting a little too-close-for-comfort.
Dont forget the rook either. It may be unable to cloak, but its cheap and works well for roaming gangs (especailly with rr). EVE history

Yea buy a BB and run around in it, you can easily setup one for next to nothing.
Also try and be at least 170km from the fight, watch your velocities and make sure you aren't in line with any celestials, if you do it right and then are careful falcons are super survivable. Biggest thing is to control your range and know when to disengage and move, usually just cloaking will dissuade most aggressors but preset bookmarks are a must.
Anyhoo my setup... Jams out to 194 optimal and another 41 falloff, and jams for 11 pts.
[Falcon, Roaming] Co-Processor II Signal Distortion Amplifier II Signal Distortion Amplifier II
10MN MicroWarpdrive II ECM - Spatial Destabilizer II ECM - Spatial Destabilizer II Enfeebling Phase Inversion ECM I 'Hypnos' Ion Field ECM I 'Umbra' I White Noise ECM Sensor Booster II, Targeting Range
Covert Ops Cloaking Device II Recon Probe Launcher I, Snoop Scanner Probe I Salvager I Salvager I
Particle Dispersion Augmentor I Particle Dispersion Projector I
The probe launcher has come in handy in countless situations, and t2 salvage pays for any ships i loose, its not like you are there to do damage anyway. The meta 4 jammers work just as well as a T2 unless you heat them, but then you just have to be careful, not to mention they use less cap. Been in several 600+ man fleet fights and survived all of them, only lost one because a gang mate warped to me and decloaked me at a bad time.

Er... dunno if any of this is too obvious but:
Jamming: Right click all your jammers and set them to "Auto-repeat off".
Unlock modules and drag them around into colour coded groups so all the jammers of the same type are next to each other.
To jam a ship, start with the appropriate jammers (as I said, they're colour coded which is nice). Click, see if the jam takes. If it does move to the next target. If it does not, try another jammer.
Once a target is jammed it has a bar under it's icon counting down 20 seconds. Depending on the ship it may be prudent to start trying to re-jam well before this runs out.
You can use the wrong type of jammers with a much lower chance of success.
Multi-specs have a somewhat lower chance of success.
Recons and Battleships have high sensor strength (listed on the show info window) so for them you basically always want a racial of the appropriate type.
Falcons should be priority one (if they jam you, you can't jam anything).
Discuss your jamming priorities before the fight starts if possible. If you have a few ECM ships you probably want to split the targets up between you to prevent redundancy.

He was a fool as with a little patience he could have warped in at range from his fleet.
A dead falcon in the first few seconds of the first engagement is a bloody useless falcon, a little time spent getting into position may lose you a name on the first killmail but it will get you on every one after that and make you a asset in your gang for the entirety of the operation instead of just being the first loss mail.

Wow alot of replies and yet nobody has pointed out the first 2 rules of flying a falcon? You guys all suck btw.
Follow these rules and you will be a very welcome addition to any gang, hated by all your enemies, and never die:
1. ALWAYS BE FULLY ALIGNED BEFORE YOU DECLOAK. 2. Use tactical Bookmarks, specifically have a bookmark either at the edge of the grid or slightly off grid. In any given fight assuming the fight continues long enough, you will be forced to warp out eventually. Warping out to a spot you just made on the way in, a few hundred or few thousand km, turning around coming right back in can be done in about 20 seconds, the length of a jam cycle. Warping off the the nearest planet (where tacklers are BOUND to follow you to) will put you out of commission for longer, and lord help you if you're forced to warp out to a random celestial many AU away from the fight, you may as well be docked for the amount of good you'll do your gang if you're spending 2-3minutes between jams cus you're nub self is warping multiple AU anytime a tackler get's close, which they will do it's their job.
Those 2 are by far the most important rules to flying a falcon. The 3rd rule Sok mentioned which is never be decloaked longer than you need to be. Other less important stuff about setting up bookmarks, i'll let ppl who do that stuff tell you about it. I will say over reliance on bookmarks like that make you a bad pilot though. -------------------------- NOTR

For 0.0 fleet fights you typically see something like:
[Falcon, fleet] Signal Distortion Amplifier II Signal Distortion Amplifier II Signal Distortion Amplifier II
10MN MicroWarpdrive II Sensor Booster II Enfeebling Phase Inversion ECM I 'Umbra' I White Noise ECM 'Hypnos' Ion Field ECM I BZ-5 Neutralizing Spatial Destabilizer ECM BZ-5 Neutralizing Spatial Destabilizer ECM
Covert Ops Cloaking Device II 'Malkuth' Heavy Missile Launcher I, Caldari Navy Widowmaker Heavy Missile 'Malkuth' Heavy Missile Launcher I, Caldari Navy Widowmaker Heavy Missile Cynosural Field Generator I
Ionic Field Projector I Particle Dispersion Projector I
Cyno, because they typically handle this duty since they can still do their job while stuck in place.
Sensor booster gives you that additional range so you can jam outside most fleet sniper battleship optimals.
Double up on the caldari jammers for jamming other falcons/scorpions.
MWD because it's 0.0, you need it.
The rigs give you increased targeting range and increased jammer optimal, while the three low slot signal distortion amps provide the highest jamming strength.

Safespots are your friend.
Get in an inty and orbit each station and gate, in every system you could be engaged in, at a range of about 180km.
This gives you the option of warping to zero to said gate or station, if in lowsec you won't be targetted by sentries and still have sufficient range the other side of the gate to be effective.
Make three of these safespots as you're orbiting the gate/station, ensuring each safespot is at least 150km from each other i.e. you can warp between them. __________________________________________

Edited by: Pacum''cha on 12/12/2008 13:31:40 Home-base falcon - used in system that you frequent where you can make 200km bookmarks:
Highs: cloak, standard launchers, scan probe launcher (need scan probing skills to utilize this ship to its max) Mids: sensor booster with targeting range script, 6x racial jammers Lows: 3x signal distortion amplifier Rigs: 2x particle dispersion projectors
Benefits: Can lock and jam from 200-220km within optimal range of jammers. Can stay way out of range of most ships except some l33t snipers like Roks and Apocs. If you see a sniping Apoc or Rokh jam it first. Cons: Since you're using projector rigs your ECM strength isn't at its highest.
Without sensor booster you will not be able to lock from 200km. Without two projector rigs you will not be able to jam from 200km in optimal.
Roaming falcon - for those system where you have no bookmarks and will be engaging withn 13-100km off the gate
Highs: cloak, heavy launchers, scan probe launcher (need scan probing skills to utilize this ship to its max) Mids: 10mn mwd, 6x racial jammers Lows: 3x signal distortion amplifier Rigs: 2x particle dispersion augmentors
Your ship will be able to lock from 100km no problem and since you have no bookmarks don't really need that sensor booster. You do need a mwd to gain distance on gates if needed. Since you are not ECMing from 200km put two rigs that give bonus to ECM strength rather than range.

4th and 5th mods/rigs to increase a stat will add almost nothing due to stacking penalties. There are better choices available than jam strength rigs on a falcon that already has 3 SDAs tbh.

Agreed. The only time I have lost a Falcon like this (lost plenty of them in other ways) I was about 150km from it, missed a jam, got tackled by a very fast inti and took 2 salvo's from it.
