A question to the eve community. Are interceptors still usefull?
I always encounter the problem of the following: - Neuts (because of those you can't do your job effectively) - Warriors (a pain in the ass to tank) - Warp speeds at shorter range (less then about 30AU) *Only when you are at full warp you reach that amazing warpspeeds
I don't have that much experiance in interceptors yet. But it is definatly a shipclass I love to fly & like to specialize more into. Would people kindly to give me some more input about this & what their experiance is with interceptors? (flying one and fighting against one)
PS: I know the taranis rocks, but that is not what I am asking for. Is an interceptor still a tool for keeping the enemy on its place?

Yes they're still useful. You get a damage Ceptor and tackler Ceptor for each race, and they still reach speeds with regular modules that are pretty close to what they got pre-speed patch. I think my Malediction goes about 200 m/s less now or something. The really wacky speeds got taken out of the equation by a change to rigs and plants though, but if you were flying unrigged, unplanted Ceptors before you probably won't feel much of a change unless you liked engaging from inside of scrammer range (which now kills your MWD of course.)
The tackler Ceptors get a range bonus to webifiers and scrams/disruptors, so they can still hold someone with a web from outside of MWD-killing range.

Are we playing the same game 0.0? They have only bonus to their scram/disruptor range

Warrior II's **** interceptors. Good luck tanking them for more than about 30 seconds. Shoot for 5 km/s. That takes care of the damage from alot of missiles as well as the tracking for ranged guns. Dont invest too much into them. Because of the patch, expect to lost more of them than you lost before. Interceptors 4 is a must.

I'm training towards lvl 5 soon. The skills arent a problem. But are they able to do their job? If not... whats the whole point of that shipclass then?

They still do their job just fine as long as you adjust your expectations somewhat:
1. They are no longer the nigh invulnerable perma-tacklers that they were before. They can still get in and get the initial point on someone long enough for something bigger to take over, but now they end up disengaging more often after someone else has taken over.
2. Light Drones are a real issue now. Fit your tackling 'ceptors with weapons appropriate to kill off drones and you'll get some degree of breathing room, but you still have ot be very mindful.

Yes. The difference to a well fit t1 frigate isnt that insane anymore though.

Use the tackler interceptors, those get a bonus on disruptor range and you can stay outside heavy neut range.

If you got halfdecent dps on your inty try to kill them when they chase you, if that doesnt reduce damage enough your backup is too slow.

Yea, its a pita. I feel it got somewhat better since the patch, still they should accelerate/decelerate faster.
But anyway, your major advantage is the quick align time coupled with good warp speed, you should catch cruisers/BSs easily even if they warp before you do with some practice in judging where they went (knowing the system helps, what gates are popular?).

Anyone that thinks interceptors suck now is clearly doing it wrong. They're still as awesome (for what I want them for anyways).

They're still useful, but their practical lifetime on the battlefield was reduced from about 4-10 minutes (most fits are not cap stable) to perhaps 30 seconds.

No, you can't really use them to maintain a point on most ships anymore. It used to be that interceptor-killing was the domain of only particular ship types (vagabond, sniping cruisers, any EAF/recon) but now almost any ship can pop an interceptor easily within perhaps 30 seconds or so.
The biggest change is that interceptor V is no longer especially worthwhile because the ability to tackle outside of heavy neut range doesn't enhance your survivability. Neuts or no neuts, you're going to die quickly.

well i just bought 10* Taranis so i hope they are still usefull
That said, MWD Jag gets acceptable speed, good tank and better dps than most interceptors. I think the question as to whether Interceptors are worth flying is best rephrased as which interceptors are worth flying. There was even talk of French toast
But there was none to be had |

With the new-ish interceptor role bonus reducing cap cost for disruptors, I'd say a good majority of interceptors are cap stable (or can be easily).
In fact, I'd say the only one that isn't cap stable is the Pulse Sader.
Warrior IIs (even more so from bonused drone boats) are something to worry about, but you can definitely grab a point and hold on to a target for the time it takes backup to arrive. If not, overload your MWD a cycle and burn away from them and take your target's drones with you.

Only at the cost of giving up a mid (never desirable) or a low. Dedicating a low to a capacitor mod is now triply difficult - most ceptors need a sensor mod to lock at max disruptor range, speed mods are all the more precious now that ceptors are slower, and tanking mods are required to delay death by drone.

If you're burning away, you're no longer maintaing a point. You've already been forced out of the fight.

Inties are going to suck if you fit them like the popular fits prepatch.
you can't fill your lowslots with speed mods because it's just plain fail you've got to fit a relative tank and close range weapons with some dps for dealing with light drones. I'm not going to post my fits, because I did that in another 'do inties suck now?' thread "SPEED + GANK = SPANK... Spank that ***** up" |

I consider 3 ceptors worth flying. Here are the fits + uses:
Stiletto for gatecamps - Scram + web + disruptor with a signal attunation in the low slows. 2 rigs + remaining low is plenty for speed / agility enhancements. Best ship in the game for stopping a re-approach.
Ares for belt tackle - 4 Lows lets you tank warriors and go fast. You want 2 speed rigs, 2 speed mods + light armor tank (DC + SAR works). Mids would be mwd, disruptor and cap recharger.
Taranis for anti-inty - best dps of any cetpor, mild speed differences between ceptors are even more easily overcome post-QR and warrior II's are stronger than ever against inties. |
