I was mining with some friends, and I had a belli cruiser with 3 lasers and 2 missile turrets. We had some pirates come to us in a 0.6 sector and my friends industrial ship was above me. I fired a missle at the pirate which hit the industrial ship and then the police came in, jammed me and killed my cruiser...
This is a bug that needs to be fixed, perhaps when you are attacked you should have a pop up box with "would you like police protection?" as the popup.
Please post any similar incidents any of you guys have had. Thanks ! ---------------------------------------

No it's not a bug. It's the result of you being careless. The police don't have the time or AI ability to interview all suspect at the scene of a crime in Eve. All they know is that it was you who fired, and it was you who had to pay the price.
Rough justice I know. Though you might try purring a pertition into the GM's to appeal against the action.

I was not being careless - it was a simple exploit which resulting in my ship being blown up. Justice of what? He wasnt even targeted, this is the first time ive used this setup, please explain where I was "careless".
The police should ask the person being fired on a simple yes/no do you want protection. This will avoid ALL these problems. Not hard to administer.
Thanks. ---------------------------------------

Its just u being careless tbh
a) Splash damage is effective in most games and has consequences.
b) Why use missles anyhow lol
c) You had time to warp out after realising the mistake "All for One and One for All!" |

Splash this, splash that.
Hello.
What is the best deffensive weapon in thsi game? Miner1.
We can not use smartbomb to defend ourselves from enemy missiles and now we can not even use missiles to fight back.
So what are we suppose to do?
Just surrender our ships to CCP?
If police have ability to warp scramble its victims they also could have ability to do it repeatedly and to interview alleged victims and to do some kind of investigation.

This must be the same story posted on the other thread, although this time it's the friend who posted this.
Police should not have a "shoot first ask questions later". That is not just a bug, but it's cruel and unrealistic. Sometimes it feels like you're under heavy booted martial law.
The Police AI should be modified. First, in the event of an attack, the police ship first issues a warning. Failure to head this warning, the police will then attempt to jam and web you, but NOT FIRE YOU. If the player attempts to lock on or shoot at the police, he will then be SHOT at. Is this hard to program? I don't think so.
I plea to the developers to make the security system strong but realistic, protecting those it intends to protect, rather than kill them zealously.
As for the first poster, I would advise him/her to file a petition, suing or demanding that damages for the lost cruiser be paid. Cases of police abuse should be properly compensated. It's not just proper role playing, it's also just plain right.

Same thing happened to me when i hit a fellow gang-member with a defender missile: Sec-drop and "Hello Mr Policeman".
Its not a bug though - its a "feature" of the highly evolved AI.
You have to learn to live with it until such a time as the AI learns to walk upright or grows opposable thumbs.
Don't hold your breath.
(Actually I wonder if the AI has evolved past book-lungs yet....)

I hit a member of my corps indy because the pirate had been killed and the missile went for another target. That was reasonable because it was not a fof missile.
If you were using a non-fof missile or shot the missile when the pirate was very close then I expect there will be a chance for the missile to hit the wrong target. Just like real life.
Those saying it's a bug, as we can't tell how the poster, the indy and the pirate were oriented and at what range the missile was fired or the kind of missile fired why do you assume there is a problem? I wouldn't hold my breath either unless you have a screen shot of the incident with the above.
Another warning message box, thats all we need. Personally I prefer to learn how to use the weapons properly which includes when not to use them.
When you submit a bug report (instead of just complain) make sure you describe the stuff above so the devs have some idea of what happened. 'I shot a missile and it hit the wrong target' is hardly usable.
As an asside, might I suggest drones, 3 goblin drones are sufficent on the Bell for protection in up to 0.4 space and the don't cost to run. 3 hammerheads are even better.

I thought same-corp damage was supposed to be ignored anyway?

Same thing happened to me a while ago, though I agree it was my stupidity, it still was extremly annoying.
I'm in a gang with a friend, warping around, he calls for my help, he's got a pirate on his ass. I go out to help him, lock on him by accident, and fire one or two shots that never hit him, lock off and lock on the pirate, attack and kill it. Right after i kill it, in comes a police cruiser firing on me. I had just bought my punisher for 560k back in the begining of the game when that was a lot (still is for me). I was warping away (in warp) when i blew up. GM's all said it was my fault and it wasn't a bug. The police AI should be changed to prevent this from happening.

Missiles go in a straight line and blow if they hit anything in between. If you hit someone else not in the corp even if you weren't aiming at them you should be in trouble.
You hitting a corp member should not have set the cops off though. There will be plenty of times that corps want to shoot at each other to test things.
Missiles also explode on roids so indis sitting behind them are safe from missile fire from pirates :)

Well... maybe you all should examine this case for a moment. Is it not what you all wanted? Increased protection in the Empire regions, so that any offender wouldn't stand a chance? Well maybe "you should be careful what you wish for"... since this is the direct result of all your complaining about griefers in empire space. Maybe you shouldn't trust CCP to implement anything correctly. They havn't been able to program a good AI since the conception of this game. Well... glad you all are reaping the benefits of your *****ing... you go get those bad guys you Concord pigs... hahaha. Heres the question... which was worse M0o killing newbies on a limited basis. Or.. Concord cops who kill everyone in empire space? You decide.

The police have to be vicious and uncompromising. Any polite warnings or pauses to check and see if the victim 'wants police protection' mean that a serious attacker gets away unpunished. Simple as that.
What should happen is that some if not all 'friendly fire' damage from members of the same gang is ignored. Not the same corp, I'd say. That's a bit too open ended.. it could in theory allow a corp infiltrator to destroy every pilot a corp had in space without retaliation if noone was available to fire them from the corp. Gangs can be broken off or left fairly easily if a traitor turns up in their midst.

Shadowstrike...I'm going to have to agree with Damon :/
Anyway didn't this problem happen even before the new security systems were in place? I seem to remember ppl complaining that the police attacked and destroyed them from splash damage (or indirect fire and friendly fire incedents) before last week's patch.
But a relatively simple fix (IMO at least) would be to put up a box once the "victim" recieves splash damage or a stray missile/shot that asks whether they need assistance from the police or Navy. ------------------------------------- Interm-CEO for EVE Marshals http://www.EVEMarshals.com |

Got agree with the "No more boxes" side.
Gangs and corp members getting hit by splash damage shouldn't affect sec rating IMO. Even if the situation is a corp infiltrator is attacking other corp members. To me, that's the corp's responsibility to take care of. Internal politics ect. And its not like the guy is stealing all the corp's assets with an alt which will be deleted. He's right there for purposes of justice.
Gang and corp membership in most cases is completely voluntary. You go into battle knowing your partner(s) are armed with area effect weapons. I think it's highly unfair to force them not to use those weapons for fear of sec hits and Concorde attacks. Nevermind tactically stupid. I'm a close combat fighter. I know the risks being in close. That's my responsibility to deal with.
But I'll be a whole lot angrier if I die because my mates had to pull their punches for fear of hitting me than if I take a loss to friendly fire. Combat is risk
I mean its like you want corporations to oblige each other like its sex or something. Pffft I would rather **** my enemy.- Rohann

Gangs and corp members shooting each other DOESN'T effect sec rating or triggers a police intervention. We shoot at each other all the time in our corp to try out new modules etc.

Oh yes it does. Apperently it doesn't happen to everybody though witch makes it a clear BUG no mater what GMs or dev say.
Unless ofcour all who claim to be shoting at gangmembers without police showing up are all doing it i low-sec space... But I don't think so.

I sat shooting my corp mate in his new cruiser for about 5 mins with railguns in a 0.8 sector and nothing happened. I still have 1.5 sec rating, no police. Maybe CCP should clearly set the record straight on this one. Corp damage should not effect your security status, or lead to the police being called.

An idea I might bring up to CCP. But if you do not like it then lets get some new ideas.
How do you feel about this?
Give an ability for an individual to "CALL THE POLICE". Then an immediate behind the scenes check is done to see if an unauthorized Warp Disruption/Scramble or Stasis or Weapons hit was going on and who initiated it.
If the check fails to find you a victim, then a message can flash on the screen "Concord Police has been monitoring the situation, we see no reason to get involved."
If the check shows that you are the one who initiated aggressive actions, then a message can flash saying "Com'on <player name> our monitoring shows you are the agressor. Stop now before we are called into action by your victim,"
If the check shows that you are the victim, THEN and ONLY THEN shall the CONCORD Police come in and be Ruthless to the aggressor.
This way when a couple of friends (non corp members, non gang members) can accidently hit each other with CONCORD Police coming in to be its Ruthless self.

The only thing I personaly feel would be needed is for any damage betwen GANG-members to be ignored by the "police" (that is apperently the case for some and not for others, that just screams BUG to me).
The "call the police button" is not entierly to my liking, it would mean that some one can attack me without conequenses if I happen to be away and can't call the police (happens a lot when mining in high sec space, geting killed then could ofcours be blamed on me not paying atention). I'd like it to work the oposite way. Let's have a "un-call the police button". You take damage and police warps in, you realice it was just splash damage from your friend, you push the un-call button to let the police know you don't need any help. They then leave you buddy alone.
And ofcours police ships should never ever ignore pirates just becous they hapen to be NPCs.

Ahh "un-call the police button" I like that. However we need to make sure that only the victim can call off the police and not the aggressors.
And I was unaware that the gang members were not working properly in this area.
That should be reported in a bug report(br) and on the "Patch Review" thread.

Why bother with the extra step of a 'call' button in the first place? Under no circumstances can I see friendly fire ever needing to bring in CONCORD. Just make them ignore corp or gang members shooting each other 100% of the time and leave it at that.

Vachir,
I no longer like the Call button idea. But remember Vachir, there are situations where you are with your allied friend and NOT under the protection of a GANG.
Hence I still see a need for an "Call off the Dogs" Button

I say take these steps:
1) Make four "confirm avenge" setting in options in the "confirm" list, "confirm avenge for corp," confirm avenge for gang," "confirm avenge for buddy," and "confirm avenge for all."
2) The first three default to "yes."
3) People in the appropriate "confirm avenge" group hit you with "friendly fire," a popup asks you if you want the police to avenge the attack.
That ought to satisfy most people.
