On second thought, three possible settings for each "group" is better:
1) Automatic Avenge - No popup, the police comes and shoots.
2) Confirm Avenge - Popup confirmation before avenging.
3) Never Avenge - No popup, automatically tells the police to bugger off in response to fire from that group.

On third thought, perhaps a system like this is more clean and more RP and probably less hairy to code:
1) There is "send distress call regarding" popup list of buttons you can click on with the attacker's name next to the button, survey-scanner style.
2) Make four settings: "automatically send distress call when attacked by strangers," "automatically send distress call when attacked by corp members," "automatically send distress call when attacked by gang members," and "automatically send distress call when attacked by people on your buddy list."
3) The first defaults to "yes," the rest defaults to "no."

In that case you could extend the 'do not call police' functionality to anyone that has you in their address book (seems to be the equivilant of friend status).

Why can't the game engine instead just check to see if the ship receiving damage from the missile was locked by the ship that launched that missile? Seems pretty clear cut to me as far as targeted missiles go.

Because then you could harass someone with untargeted missiles or even target something and line up LoS so that missiles hit another ship on purpose.
It doesn't solve the problem, and it opens the door for griefing.

Here's my 2 cents on the topic. Your ship can move correct, some can even move fast. So if you want to use missles why not impliment a bit of strategy and maneuver yourself infront of your partner with the Indy and then fire on the pirate thus avioding the slash damage to your partner? If that fails you can always run. Why must we constantly petition CCP for every problem we face? Try to use a bit of intelect and avoid a situation that may be harmful to you. Take what ya kin... Gives nothin back!!!

Because your 'partner' may not always have an indy, in a battle group with everybody using missiles things are harder to manage. Also take into account smart bombs, non-FoF and defender missiles, and it becomes pretty obvious that at some point one ship is going to damage another ship in a situation where neither party wants the police involved.

i agree with Fritz Ionar on the idea of using an un needed button.
The idea of the police flying in with a battle ship and completly destroying a ship with abo****ly no warning or chance to avoid the problem is ridiculous.
Another way around this would be to have the police give you a second chance like in x beyond the frontier. In that the police would fly in and say do not fire again or we will be forced to take action. This meant if you did make a mistake it wouldn't be a problem because you simly wouldn't do it again.
