The MAtrix is sci-fi, because it uses sci-fi props. It's a bit nonsensical to say "energy weapons - replace with swords and?" because it DID have energy weapons. Replace the props, and you change the genre.
From a narratological perspective, however, it is no more a sci-fi story than LoTR is a fantasy one.
Sorry that I missed your point, sleep is weighing heavily on my eyes. However the story doesn't tell the story of a sci-fi 'Neo' just as LotR doesn't tell the story of Hobbits. That seems to be a topic for another thread though.
Back to Keanu, I love the guy, he is sexy and turns me on. Unlike many actors (Nicholas Fail) he doesn't act beyond his abilities. The thing I hated about The Matrix was Trinity. I couldn't stand her and then her eternal speech at the end just before she died, I wanted to kill the damned *****, she just wouldn't shut up and die.

Unless the synopsis is horribly horribly unfair to the movie, The Matrix is larger in scope and takes on more interesting topics.

I've never understood the need to see all stories in terms of other stories.

If I recall Enemy Mine was made in the 80 or early 90's and it dealt with a war between humans and an alien race. A space fighter pilot from both sides got into a dogfight and each crash landed on an desolate planet and at first tried killing each other but over a period of time actually became friends and figured out they needed each others help to survive.
The alien has a kid (they are asexual or whatever you call it in terms of self reproducing) and dies leaving the human with the child. Later a human slave mining colony sets up on the planet and captures the kid and the human pilot goes in and rescues said kid and other slaved aliens.
It's been ages since I've seen that movie.

This guy pretty much sums up my thoughts on KR. The other side of the argument is also tackled on this page.

On another KR note, I just came across a rumor page saying that there is a Cowboy Beebop movie in the makings and KR is rumored to play the part of Spike. A role that he may be perfect for.

I have to say that The Matrix Revolutions is my favourite of the three.
The first is good in setting the very real reactions to having your entire life ripped to pieces, I like the idea that it's small scale (only one ship and crew and only one line of dialogue about Zion "if you live long enough you might like to see it") giving a very real idea that these people are very much on their own, no matter how many ships Zion may have out at any one time. the only gripe I have is that they didn't flesh out the machines enough (the real machines not the agents, those are fine) the scene with Neo and Morpheus talking in the white room with the chairs and TV probably could have been twice as long to flesh the story out a bit more. (but this was very nicely done in the Animatrix)
Reloaded suffers from Middle Child Syndrome in that it has to fill the gaps between film one and two, introduce all the characters very quickly and set up the story (again the Animatrix and Enter the Matrix help with this) for the third movie.
The third movie raises the choice of control, free will and choice brilliantly by making the One simply part of the cyclical system of control.

I've always loved the way this is emphasised by having many repetitions of events in Revolutions. The cyclical nature of the system almost seems to affect the movie itself.

i liked the third movie.
but as with any so-so sci-fi movie it's easy to criticize and poke holes in.
starwars was great. but why didn't yoda just hop on a ship and push the deathstar into a REALstar. 
if i was commander of zion. everything would be manual (especially my defensive weaponry). no/minimal computers. i'd had emps flossin and flyin all over taht ****. i'd have emps's strapped to ppl.
