Overview: This is a video with a special emphasis on the carrier's Triage mode.
Narration: Once again Princess Aricia has kindly lent her voice to the video. And she's well placed for commentary since she was involved in all the featured battles.
Tech stuff: Because of the documentary-style, the high bit-rate/res was necessary to preserve certain details and it has the bonus that all the large scale fights show full turret effects, HDR, drones, fighters, wrecks, shadows, everything, on the premium client (to keep up the speed repping/switching of triage in that environment required the video cards to be well whipped by their straddling hamsters).

Thanks for the kind replies, I'm glad people like the approach to the video; there's a lot of very cool stuff on this forum (I don't think any other MMO could compete) so its nice to fill a niche.
David Attenborough still isn't returning calls but I'm sure no one will mind me getting Princess to narrate :)
It's amazing how often something that feels like it's going to be a non-incident suddenly turns into some awesome fight and then you remember that you forgot to turn fraps on.
During the three week period when I forced myself to 'record everything' there were six fights that I felt were potentially suitable for a triage documentary, of which I used three - so I could still potentially make a volume 2 some time, we'll see (though by then I'll have had another 'camera on' month).
One of the six fights from the recorded period, that didn't make the video, was a fight at a friendly POS, where we were jumped by a large gang while repping (Thanatos can do both shield and armour rep). The enemy gang couldn't break the triage rep but their FC had the good idea of trying to bump me into forcefield. Since triage carriers are effectively in siege mode and can't move, I wouldn't be able to leave the shield to rep the (webbed) battleships outside.
Seeing Megathrons closing in for the bump I quickly changed my ship password to an intentionally wrong one, and the carrier bounces off the shield, carries on repping and we're able to kill them off without loss. It was a close run thing - mainly because I felt obliged to write an abracadabra-esque fake password as opposed to a single letter - and as with the fights that made the video, illuminates some tactical aspect of triage mode.
I do regret having made a second video without Princess saying her trademark 'Oh My Goodness' (primed/huge counter drop) in the script though

Not sure what I can say about this tbh. It is that good. Display of tactics, narration, quality and fights makes an absolutely brilliant package.
Great to see sort of small scale cap battles where tactics matter and sub-capital fleet actually has a role and is involved. Fantastic show from both sides and I think you should consider your selves lucky to have experienced it. I envy you.
Also showed some adaptability, fast thinking and one or two moves I had not seen nor thought of before. So I also learned from it, very nice!
Cheers, Lowa

Wow...
Where do I start? Given my loyalties and my particular 'alignment' I do not get to see fights of this magnitude very often, let alone partake in them. To see a video produced in this way is quite something. I am not a big lover of alliance 'politics' and the trappings that entails but I have to say...
Superb editing...
Great narrative (I dunno who Princess is, but I could just listen to her all day long )
Fantastic footage.
Please provide more vids like this!
As much as I enjoy vids provided by other pilots, yours is more 'involving' than many... that is not in any way detrimental to other people that work on creating delightful eye-candy... but yours is a breath of fresh-air in it's uniqueness.
I know nothing about Foundation, but please, for the sake of the kittens... keep them coming!!

I cannot recall any fleet video as complete as this one (but one perhaps). Awesome video quality & good story-telling (this is what "does it" for me).
Last G campaign is also an awesome movie, telling a story while showing some pew-pew.
I hope people learn from this, and start to tell more background on what is actually happening in the fleet fights you are watching.

awesome video; really shows what they can do.
Triage carriers are for the rich or the communist, however - that seige mode makes you unreppable so you are gonna die when they bring in the dreads (or just enough dps)
does anyone have a link to this guys last video, similar kind of thing (minus the triage) vs RA? that was really good too and i need to give it another DL. i think it was called something like "60(#?) caps down in great wildlands"

Really good job. Being Club Bear, its my moral duty to hate caps, but this video does a great job of showing how to use them with class, in a role they were meant to shine in.
Also just generally nice presentation with the voice over and such. Gives it an extra something that a lot of other videos lack.

archon more often, unless you are triaging a sheild tank fleet.
but yeah, sure the nid would rep more, but in triage mode, are you ever really in danger of not having enough remote rep?
with double remote reppers, in seige, the diffrence the nid's bonus's means you basically have the equivalent of 10 reppers instead of 8. the downside is your much easier to be killed yourself.
so much for the intended role of the nidhoggur....
basically, the nid is best for non-triage hotdrops, still throw out a bit of extra dps and rep without triage where its bonus is a bit more meaningful. or if you have a mixed tank type fleet since it gets bonus's to both. but then, thanny's damage bonus is just as nice since most hotdrops are ganks anyways.
min caps are crap tbh. if the nid had a self-rep amount bonus, combined with triage mode it might be better (archon/chimera's resist bonus is better when being RR'd but in seige the self-rep bonus would be just as good, math depending).
Thx for that other link i asked for, dl-ing

Whilst I sometimes do both shield and armour rep in triage (Raven devotees sometimes need considerable prodding to armour tank, and of course POS repping antics), I will use an Archon once I have Amarr Carrier V on Alazais. It has lots of cap, armour and the perfect bonus. The reason for waiting for Carrier V is that it's amazing how often I end up needing the last few km of the 52km range. Mobility of support fleet, good cyno placement, etc. all make that very important.

Great video and the commentry by the lovely PA made it easy to follow and more interesting.
About the Archon. Isnt it less versatile than the Thanatos? Where the Thanatos can still Shield and armour rep and its tank it also pretty sweet, cap isnt too bad and when not in triage it has some serious dps with its fighters. So which is better? -------------------------------

Unfortunatelly the chimera doesn't have any bonuses on armour remote repairers. Coupled with the fact most fleetships and capitals are armourtanked the chimera wouldn't be a better choice.
If more remoterepair-amount isn't wanted the archon is the best choice due to better local tank and capacitor.
Originally by: Rassja with double remote reppers, in seige, the diffrence the nid's bonus's means you basically have the equivalent of 10 reppers instead of 8. the downside is your much easier to be killed yourself.
Why is that? The niddhoggur have the same localtank as the thanatos. The capacitor is a bit smaller though but both are capstable with 2 localreppers and triage fitting.

im sorry but although the vid is nicely done and you make valid points about the triage module and how if used correctly you can screw the enemy... the example of the carrier in a belt being rescued.... no 1 the carrier shouldnt have done somthing so stupid and 2 dripping in like that was dumb as they could have had reienforcements enrout in the form of hic's and a hot drop of moros heck mibi black ops even...(the broadsword is one example of why not to drip in one by one it got lucky as hell). an example of why i left fdn ¼_¼

When you get a bad situation, you try to make the best out of it. That is what's been done here.. That is what the video shows... not that someone was using this as a tactic.
And "what if's" doesn't count here.. They didn't have a black ops or a big support gang.. IF they had... I'm sure we would have dealt with it in the best way we could have.

still that section of the video wasn't a testament to the use of triage but merely an example of bad fc'ing on behalf of your opponent.

You do have a point, the carrier being assisted probably shouldn't be in a belt with 30 hostiles on it :P
But on the flipside it's also a game, and people go to help their friends - which, as I recall, was how the carrier being rescued got stuck in the first place. So in a sense he's just doing the same thing I am.
This sort of things happens - possibly worryingly? :) - regularly and maybe next time I get dropped by 10 Moros doing that. Such is life.
I do stand by the call to bring the support in one at a time though, as and when they were able. The original rescue gang had been killed you see, as the narration mentions. So support was becoming available one ship at a time. With a stalemate established, warping one ship in at a time encouraged them to stay and attempt to kill each new target (in case the rep couldn't switch fast enough, or a shield tank in the case of the Broadsword), while trusting their Falcons to keep the incoming ships quiet.
If we'd waited 10-15mins and then warped everything in at once they'd have warped out at seeing local spike - but by gradually overwhelming the blanket jamming, we were able to get a bunch of kills once it suddenly broke.
Originally by: bluberdumpf still that section of the video wasn't a testament to the use of triage but merely an example of bad fc'ing on behalf of your opponent.
I don't think it could have been possible without triage though. Maybe dropping a cap fleet (which wasn't available) would have scared them off but 3-4 carriers would have got jammed and he was out of cap too. The added bonus was that combined with the ability to safely bring in one target at a time, to an effective stalemate zone, we were able to actually get some revenge kills too, as described above. And their FC is pretty good I think; an xdeathx gang (good pvpers) who after all defeated the first rescue gang earlier on.
As an aside, my favourite part about things like this is that it's often my friend Knightstar who calls me. But no matter the situation, we remain quintessentially English on the telephone. So whether motherships are in structure, or the sky is falling, the conversation must proceed sensibly.
(Ring, Ring) "Hello there" (10% armour) "Greetings, how are you?" (1% armour) "I'm fine thank you. How are things with you?" (70% structure) "Oh not bad at all, old chap, thanks for asking. Minor situation in Eve, actually, of all things". (60% structure) "Oh really? What might be the matter?") (50% structure) "Yes, indeed. We may possibly, other obligations notwithstanding, need a triage carrier to....."
etc.

Cheers. The opening track is by the band Era (wiki) and the first song on their 'Very Best of' album (2005). I'm not sure if it's the same mix as on their self-titled debut. In the video the song number appears behind artist name and a google image should match the album covers as given.
The other artists (+wiki) are Leftfield (Open Up), Underworld (Cowgirl) and Emperor. It uses the closing track of their In The Nightside Eclipse album (one of the definitive black metal albums) and also an orchestral reworking of said track from the 'Loss and Curse...' EP.
Actually, the Underworld song was played for Alazais' first appearance in Damige's vids, when I successfully hotdropped his gang way back in Lock N Load 5(?), so a bit of symmetry there. I picked it up when watching some old but still very cool vids.
(Fleet battle sound of third fight is actually recorded from the battle btw, but re-jigged and re-synched for timings of course. I so rarely play with sound that it shocked me how busy the cacaphony is during a big spectacle).

This video represents all of Foundati0n I dislike and really what makes their fleets what they are in fights: their cap support.
I'm with the Bears in that I hate what carriers bring to my form of PvP, however this video portrayed something else. This is the tactics game shown in brilliant illumination, which is rarely done with capital ships.
Great music, awesome narration, and excellent editing. Together, especially with with the A+ narration, this is a top video of '08. A must see, especially for those that dislike capitals in PvP, as this puts an entirely different light on their use on the battlefield for those that aren't familiar with them.

Being an FDN pilot that has had the supreme pleasure of being on the recieving end of triage carrier support I would like to state that it has added an entirely new element to my pvp enjoyment level. there is nothing like the feeling of freedom while in battle to move around the field in a battleship knowing that as long as you stay in range of triage you can fly and attack at will. It takes the normally one dimensional feeling(battle starts and you have to hold in range of spider tanking, normally sitting still and shooting targets from a non moving position) of fights and allows you to freely fight in a more lively enviroment.
Kudos to all our triage pilots for keeping us up and fighting, as the video shows its no easy task. to LM and Pa once again a great video, I hope to see more in the future, I know they take a huge effort to put together but we all appreciate them.

nice to see triage used - it is actually quite used but those pilots tend to not announce it due to their sitting duck status (triaging in front of 60-70 enemy caps is a nervous experience enough as it is).
Why use a thanatos though its inferior for triage work compared to the nidhogger that can be setup with stronger cap performance and far superior tank?

IMO the best all-round triage carrier is the Archon. In terms of raw cap the AT carriers go Archon > Thanatos > Nidhoggur. The combination of the tanking bonus and the extra slot, combined with having the best (base) cap makes the Archon perfect for the many situations where you're tanking yourself and simultaneously repping the fleet (as shown in the vid, indeed). Granted, the Archon can't also shield rep like the Thanatos or Nid.
But in a situation where death was inevitable if primed, I'd use a Nidhoggur to make the most of the juicy repping bonus while stealthily in triage.
The reason I wasn't using an Archon in the vid is simply that I don't have carrier V on Amarr - when you're immobile those extra few km are so useful - you can bet you'll need to rep someone at 51km otherwise Glad you liked the vid :)

Losing the instant rep hit of the shield transfer is surely not ideal - to often i save people because shield rep is applied giving them just enough hp for armour to cycle onto them. I'll chat in game later when you get a chance? :)

It's good to talk triage
I'd say it all depends on situation; for mixed gang support instant hit on shield is nice but for dedicated armour tanking BS you'd still need double remote reps.
Think about it this way: let's say the ship you need to rep has 12k armour with 70% resists. A triage rep cycles in 2.5 seconds. So let's say worst case (or close to, given reaction time) you get rep to him in 5 seconds.
If he were to die in under 5 seconds it means he's taking over 8000 damage a second, because (12,000/0.3)/5 = 8000dps.
But if he's taking 8000dps, because he has no shield resists, even with the Nid bonus, the combination of cap shield + cap armour wouldn't keep him up.
You would need 2 capital armour reps in that situation. They do 1200hp/s on an Archon (more on a Nid), so:
2400 rep on a 70% resist, 2400/0.3 = 8000dps tanked and he'd just stay up.
If he dies faster than 5 seconds, you wouldn't be able to keep him up anyway because of the dps that entails, so the instant hit wouldn't help (and half the rep would be on unresisted hitpoints anyway).
In the video almost all of the ships are armour repping BS with 75%+ resist so they're tanking vast dps and anything that could kill them before the hit, even with target switching, would mathematically overwhelm the tankable dps anyway (even though it's higher than some dreads).
However, if you're in a situation where a single triage armour rep would keep up the person, then having a mix of shield + armour is great because you get the instant hit and after that the tank will hold anyway. So if I'm just warping to a gate to rep some mixed support (esp. hacs, t2 cruisers, etc.) I sometimes do have shield + armour. But for the heavy duty repping I prefer the dual armour reps - because, given the fast cycle time of triage, anything that can beat your cycle time can beat your tankable DPS too, assuming the ships are custom fitted for the op.
One thing I love using capital shield for is situations where there is overwhelming rep on the field (e.g. from many other caps) and the issue is simply delay in getting it to people - triage Nids and Chimeras are great for buffering early damage with shield. This is of course another variation of the situation where one capital armour rep can keep them up and one capital shield rep laps up the damage before the armour hits.
So it all depends what you're doing, and whether your ships are kitted around you, or whether you're landing on a gate to assist assorted ships of mixed tanking, resists, classes, etc.
Shield transfer on the Nid/Thana/Chim is definitely good in the right situations (and obviously some people might shield tank their BS fleets anyway). In the specific situations in the video I'd use dual armour if I was using a Nid. But overall if someone was only training one triage carrier, the reason I'd say the Archon makes the best case, is simply because so often you end up having to deal with split fire, and you need to simultaneously tank both locally and remote (as seen in the video). This happens in many of the triage fights I get into and the Archon has the most cap and also saves the most cap in such situations by it's slot layout and resists. But like any tool in Eve it has to be tailored to the fleet it keeps alive, or the fleet be tailored to it.

This is epic, I keep watching it and listening to it in the background. I particularly love the way this video emphasises that EVE is like a game of Poker where you don't show your whole hand straight away. You field the carrier in triage and the enemy pops dreads on you, then you pop dreads on them. You force your enemy to escalate and show their hand before showing your own true force, and that's a big part of good fleet combat in EVE.
It's sad because I really do want to use a carrier in Triage mode but it does still seem like suicide, especially where we are in Faction Warfare. We've killed every carrier we've come across in a fleet, Triage or not. There has been no major engagment in FW where the use of a carrier has been successful and it has survived. It would be a different story if they were sometimes successful but literally every single time we've encounted it, the tactic fails and the carrier gets killed. It doesn't help that a neutraliser battleship can kill 150 cap/sec and a Triage carrier is very cap sensitive.
I always thought it was silly that to be even slightly effective in Triage, a carrier has to fit almost all of its mods for cap recharge and have very few slots left for a tank. I always figured Triage should reduce the cap usage of normal reps and boosters by 50% since unlike a dread they need that cap for remote reps. Considering the average Triage carrier can currently only tank about 7k before combat boosters, it doesn't seem right that they use up most of their generated capacitor to do so. As a matter of course, if the enemy pop a dread or two the carrier is basically dead regardless of its tank. Does anyone who has actually used Triage feel the same way or does the Triage carrier feel like it actually can tank enough when used on the battlefield? Like I said, the only ones I've encountered so far went down rather rapidly and didn't really help their fleet that much. |

Eight Days is entirely too long for such a well put together video to not have a reply!
Friendly Bump since I'm re-downloading it (new PC) and putting it onto a DVD with a ton of other excellent EVE Videos!
Your video will live forever on my Coffee Table. It's job will to be ready to hot drop into my DVD player on a moments notice when someone asks me how can someone play only ONE MMO game for FIVE plus years?!?!?!
Imagine their awe at watching the Massively Top Ten EVE Videos of All Time on a 7.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound System with 500 Watt Dual Voice Coil Subwoofer... on a 60 Inch LCD TV no less!
I'm sure the TWO HOURS of various trailers and videos will knock their socks off! __________

Very nice video. I enjoyed watching it even tho the ERA music selection at the beginning hitted me with disgust like a drunken sheep since i have heard the track too many times to enjoy. Other than that very nice. _________________________________ -be vary of the men behind the curtain-

The PC it was recorded on at the time (last October) was an intel Yorkfield CPU (running about 3.7 I think) and crossfire-X 4870x2s (i.e. 4 Gpus). Keep in mind though that Crossfire isn't supported properly in Eve - somewhere in the tech forum a kind soul made a table of the modes/resolutions/drivers but you won't see proper multi-GPU scaling on this, even when it's working.
The most important part at the time was a top-end Solid State drive. These are common now but essentially give you ram-drive performance in loading grid without actually needing the hassle of setting up ram-drives. And if you get the Batcall to jump and rep a faction bs that's entering structure, you need to load the grid fast
Because I enjoy overclocking, I am philosophically opposed to turning off any details, brackets, drones, etc. in fleet battles. It does have some gameplay merits: if effects are on I can more easily spot an enemy triage carrier, if I can see the fighter swarm moving it's easier to prepare for who might be prime and when dropping multiple cynos it's handy having brackets for the fleet so that I can position everything properly. And having HDR bloom on, err, makes me enjoy my tea more.
The sequel to this video will be forthcoming soon. ------------------------------ Rooks and Kings Blog |

Dont worry, the RnK guys are constantly buggin LM about when we are gona see our new video!
I for one wont stop until its complete and published, and my persistance sounds a little like:
"Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?....."
The next video i can imagine will be even better than Clarion Call if the time spent by LM is anythin to go by, not to mention the fights we've had in the past few months and the tactics employed =)

You know, I've been playing 3 1/2 years. I think I've posted twice in this section, and that's just because I've been in the videos. I'm not involved at all in this thread. The only reason I am is as a thank you. I've been watching eve vids for over 3 years and this is bookmarked as one of my top 5 favorites and is my most often recommended video, due to mainly the commentary and frank force of arms lol.
This video is something different. Not only is it enjoyable to watch but it actually is worth watching from a tactical perspective. It is what gets people thinking and makes the video so damn interesting. Major kudos for FDN/Rooks and Kings for being pioneers and letting us see what dedicated logisitic caps can do without risking 500m isk a go.

The "Clarion Call 2: Pantheon" is the single best EVE video I've ever seen. It REALLY needs subtitles, though, because between Princess Aricia's accent and the background noise/music I could only catch about half of what she said, and I WANT to hear it because RnK are f-ing brilliant.

I've recently returned to EVE after a long hiatus, and was looking to try out something i havent done before and logistics seemed to have peaked my curiosity. So as i was trying to find out how to fly one like a pro, and then i stumbled upon your videos. It definitely gave me an insight on how hectic things could get in a medium to large size engagement.
