My character is at a crossroads here. I can either go for the paladin or spend a little more time and get the nightmare. My question is this: which is better for missioning?
Keep in mind that I run an amarr agent and mostly do missions that deal EM/Thermal damage.
I'm looking for a good permanent tank where I don't have to pay full attention, along with considerable firepower to obliterate the unruly heathen rats back to their masters.
Thanks for your two cents!

Paladin can tank without needing to pay attention, whereas a standard Nightmare tank will need to be managed. Also a Paladin can save a significant amount of time with the 40km tractors. I like to put my mission wrecks in one big pile, switch to a all salvager-fit destroyer and have it looted by the Marauder and salvaged by the Catalyst in ample time.

Personally i agree with the chap above me. The sheer tank and damage output on the paladin (assuming marauders IV or above) means that even rats with fairly high EM resists melt quickly
Also, the tractor bonus is extremely nice too :)
On the side of the nightmare, it's

Well, the upside of the Nightmare is that it does much better DPS, and takes less time to train for. The downside is the tank, admittedly.
My Nightmare can do about 1021 dps up close with Mega Pulse II - ANMF + Hammerhead IIs. It does 891 with Mega Pulse II - Scorch + Hobgoblins to about 60 KM (though the hobgoblins stop a bit short of that).
A lot of people forget that the Nightmare has an insane tracking bonus that let's it hit further out and better than a Paladin. It also enables you to use close-range guns rather than Tachyon IIs.

Wait... what? You mean "closer in" over "further out"? ... I'd think a tracking bonus on the nightmare would help you put the Tachs to better use than you can on the Paladin.

The Paladin is awesome - and very easy to perma-tank. ------------ Improvize. Adapt. Overcome. |

They have the same DPS assuming they have the same amount of heatsinks.
Edit: Though tracking bonus on paladin is nice I'm sure.

further out the tracking bonus matters less and less, and up close the paladin has a 90% web. looks like paladin will do better up to web range, then nightmare will do slightly better outside of web range to about 35km and then they are about the same (using efts damage graphs, against a drake). using my paladin setup it starts doing more at 37.5km due to a tracking comp with the optimal range script (with a tracking script it looks almost identical to the nightmare).
and with close range guns the difference is even smaller with the 14km 90% web (gallente navy) and the natural increased tracking of the guns.
I personally say paladin all the way. unless all you care about is kill speed, and have caldari bs 5 already. but being able to loot the bs wrecks within 40km can add quite a bit of isk to each mission.

Personally, I say...wait, you know what? Do what Chainsaw Plankton says. Because I just realized something...every bit of loot you pick up will reduce my profits over time due to market competition. So, yeah, use a Paladin. It's totally awesome.
