Hi! I have two characters (separate accounts) that both have more or less an industrial focus. In a month or so I'll have the option to do solo mining ops in high-sec with either of these configurations. What I'm wondering is which would be the most efficient way for my mini-mining fleet to whittle down the Veldspar:
1) Hulk/Orca - This is what I was ultimately planning to head towards before I started asking this question.
2) Hulk/Hauler (Itty V) - This is what I'm doing now. Not sure if the Orca brings a substantial enough benefit in efficiency to justify the increased cost.
3) Hulk/Hulk - I've been starting to suspect that this actually be more efficient (albeit a bit more 'active') if there is a station in the system.
Do any experienced miners have any thoughts? Neither of my characters is skilled to a Hulk yet so I don't have a reel feel for it (still using my Retriever which really needs the hauler).
Thanks!

Edited by: Satrani Destiva on 20/12/2008 13:05:04 The itty 5 can haul for 3 to 4 hulks so you'd be wasting a lot of time sitting there doing nothing.
Using the orca isn't really an option to a solo miner as the bonus will not be enough to offset losing a second hulk.
Using 2 hulks would seem to be your best bet.
You could always join a corp who can give bonuses to mining by using a corp orca/command/BC or train another character or 2 and have your own mini mining fleet. -

Up to 2950m¦/minute and up to 145,000m¦ cargo, needed to be emptied every 50 minutes.

up to 2000m¦ per minute, hauling every ~20 minutes

up to 3950m¦ per minute with a max. Cargo fitting (in Lows and Rigs), warping every ~5 minutes

Thanks so much for the quick and thorough responses! So, it seems like Hulk/Hulk is probably the way to go if I stay solo with two characters -- unless I need to be a little bit AFK, then the Hulk/Orca combination really sounds like a good way to go (50mins in belt sounds really nice).
I would like to get involve in more corp mining ops, etc -- the only problem is my mining time in EVE is really limited and hard to plan. It sounds like getting into a well-run crew is a great way of going if I could be a bit more organized :-)

maybe consider getting 2 hulks and an orca. mine with the hulks for 90 mins, then switch out one of the hulks to the orca. haul the cans in and then switch back to the hulk

But then youre a target of canflippers again and the Hulk just for hauling is a little expensive.

Edited by: Elum Daikoji on 20/12/2008 14:50:53 Hulk + Hulk, and Hulk2 should swap out for an ityV every now and then. Thats going to get the highest yeild for sure. (or as previously mentioned swap out to an orca to haul, a lil bit faster but a lot more expensive) 2 Hulks outmine the singular Hulk in the other examples.

i have a Hulk on an other accont i started this one to be a second hulk but went on for an ity v and am now in a freighrer, i was like a bloody yoyo last night on our mining op we had 8 hulks a command ship BC with teh mind link and mining links running i was the only hauler on that op.
but as to your question find a quiet system use hulk/hulk for get about teh orca and get a it V for one of your pilots and fit it with 3 cargo rigs and u can take a can and a half at a time :)

2 Hulks and an Orca isn't worth it, you need at least 3 Hulks to make an Orca worth the bonuses. ---O-H--S-H-*-T---

hulk/hauler/command with a maxed out link makes only 10m less an hour than 2 hulks without the link

I'd say that is actually a toss-up. If your miners never stopped mining, then, yes, you would have higher yield with 3 hulks than 2+Orca. However, 3-hulks w/o the orca's bonus, and stopping rather frequently to haul, would give about the same yield as the 2+Orca, and be much easier/more secure. Yield might be a bit lower, but isk/effort is definately easier with 2+Orca.

You will really love the way an hulk/orca combo shines when you find a nice system with tons of belts, good ore, about 2 other people in local, and no stations!!

Having an Orca (even with 1 miner) reduces workload considerably which should be a big factor in mining). Having an Orca means I can get lasers started on Hulk and walk away for 5 mins, come back, move mins, walk away etc.
Personally I use 4 Hulk miners for my 1 Orca and it really is a breeze. The Orca can comfortably handle the output of the miners and isn't bouncing back and forth every couple of minutes between station and belt. |
