Edited by: Sky Blazer on 20/12/2008 16:07:33 I was a mission runner but decided to branch out into trading to diversify my income. And from experience with other MMOs people are usually willing to pay top dollar for collector items.
So that what I attempted to do, I started hunting through all the missions looking for cool sounding items then putting them on contract. I made about 2bil on the first week (1.5bil of that was just during the weekend), and about 1bil on the second week. I had zero competition for the first 2 weeks and the profits were really good.
Mainly you're interested in items that cannot be put on market. This is especially good for new players since most of the collector items are in level 1 missions (some of them in circle missions, or COMOS missions). And you can make a fair amount of ISK selling them to collectors. The downside is you often need to fail a mission to do this and then complete a different mission to recover the standing.
You'll probably need 1 level in the skill contracting, also when selling items try to avoid using auctions. Because it's a noncritical item (just for a collection) people will tend to hold off bidding on auctions until the last minute hoping for a lower price. So you're better off just doing a straight item exchange.
In addition to straight collectors, you have people that buy items as presents, or to keep in the holds of the pvp ships so that if they get killed they'll have a cool expensive item in their cargohold.
Pricing when I was in this business varied between 2mil to 60mil per item.
So you're probably wondering why I'm sharing this with you. Well when I started out I was hawking my wares in Jita local, the sales were great because I was making people laugh with what I was saying. Then they would buy the 50mil item I was trying to sell. Unfortunately this was my downfall because it alerted a few other people to my idea and I got competition.
I'm fairly sure that my competition was macroing it. Because really getting some of the collector items was an exercise in just sitting there clicking while trying to ignore the pain in my wrist. And he's sold in volumes that would make me collapse in pain if I tried to generate similar volumes.
My time is worth at least 30mil a hour and unfortunately this business is starting to nudge below that due to my competition. So yeah I got beaten by market PvP. Fortunately for me I don't believe in putting all my eggs in a single basket so I'm moving on to richer pastures.
However, for younger players I'm sure it would be well worth their while to get into this business. I never did this on my main characters always on brand new characters, so all you really need is some contracting skills to do it and you'll likely make at least enough to afford your first battleship if not more.
You can probably start your own collector item shop as well, as it'll save you work on constantly setting up contracts.
So make my old competition have to work for his money. This is my market PvP and from my research I reckon my competition won't be able to adapt to get other incomes that easily. :)

Yeah, I was going to ask what you consider "collector's items"? I've run probably more then 200 (gosh, maybe more) level one missions and I don't remember seeing anything I would really consider a collector's item.

Achurian White Dove, Dolls, Ancient Amarrian Relic (not sure if this one still drops)

Should be big demand for it once ambulation hits.

People BUY those things? But yeah, i know what you're talking about now...
For those that don't, this thread is referring to the key items that drop from those missions where the agent tells you that a ship got attacked by pirates and the crew got away but had to leave some oh so important relic, or manifest, or the last of its kind relic. The dolls are from a 6 part mission (I believe) where you have to pick them up from all over and drop them off. Terrible mission - but it seems there is a profit to be made from it ;P
And the reason that you lose standing is because you need to turn those items in to complete the mission. Note it's probably not a big deal... these kind of missions aren't THAT abundant to begin with.
