Edited by: Viga Degan on 21/12/2008 15:27:26 Heres the scenario... I'm flying around and BUMP I run into an asteroid. Next I'm ORBITING said asteroid and some npc rat figues out a way to shoot THROUGH said asteroid with his gauss gun or laser or whatever.
Why not make asteroids trully solid? Oh, and dont you dare nerf my missiles... they're guided and can fly around *AROUND* asteroids.

im with you there buddie but would cause alot of major reconstruction for any ship hiding on other side of station cant be hit by anything but missiles and anything on other side of a cap ship would not be hit eathier but by possibly glancing hits.
not an impossible task but i think eve will evolve another decade before that is implemented

An idea with good intentions but if you make asteroids solid then you'd have to make all objects solid and that won't work for several reasons. 1) Missiles would become the weapon of choice as you'd only have to hide behind something to not get shot 2) Fighting in belts and round celestial objects would be broken, especially in low sec when gateguns fire on someone because they've accidentally hit the gate instead of their target. 3) Fleet battles would be severely gimped because your own ships would get in the way of the targets. 4) Firing on a wartarget outside a station in highsec would run a major risk of Concordokken due to neutrals being used as human shields.

Collision detection is eating a lot of CPU as do line of sight calculations. If this were implemented you'd drown in lag.

Youve got good arguments, all except for number 4.
Currently fleet fights are so unlike the cool one on the trailers, were all the ships are neat and together and all facing the enemy.
In reality, their al just sitting in one spot in a random hodge podge often all together in a big bunch shooting whatever.
If things became solid, fleets may have to become more refined so that ships all face the same direction, keep clear of each other etc. EVE history

How is number 4 not a good argument? Imagine the carnage outside jita 4-4 if all ships were solid? People would be shooting through neutral freighters by accident.
I have to admit it would be funny though for the first couple of hours after patch deployment and then the servers would have to be shut down due to excessive concord spawns.
Oh yeah and I have been in some fleet fights where everyone was lined up and looking like a trailer but it was only because both sides knew the other was trying to make a decent video.

Did you mean to post this in Counter Strike or Microsoft flight simulator forum?
PS: For more realistic Eve game play, you can get a fire extinguisher and place it next to your computer. When ever your ship reaches half shields stand up, look around as if you are last serving crew member and say something clever to the fire extinguisher like ôDonÆt worry, weÆve been through worse. But I hope you have one last breath left in you.ö

this would have unforeseen consequences, namely concord blobs in high sec. nice idea, but not entirely a good thing

This already was implemented. In addition to the massive lag caused by large battles (OMG 5v5), it caused an exploit in which pilots would stage a CONCORD intervention by flying a n00b ship alt between two fighting pilots.
It won't happen because it already has, and the results were not good. ____________________ Pimped out Raven to run level 4 missions quickly: 210 Mil ISK. Realizing your 120 Mil ISK Drake gets the job done faster: Priceless. Made a reality by speed and missile nerf. |
