Edited by: P''uck on 23/12/2008 17:21:13 heh, after I lurnt sum latin grammar in school I had a real easy time understanding german grammar (my friggin first language!) and english grammar, too. It was fun discovering how my german and english teachers had failed for years teaching grammar properly, because that really wasnt my fault. Its easy when you get the proper explanations, and my latin teacher had it down.
altough, if were being picky, sentences are constructed in a different order in latin, but thats not that much of a problem. and as akita said, once you tread onto slavic grounds, youre pretty much ****ed with the knowledge you got from latin based languages.
my grandmother speaks czech and can communicate with people from over here all the way to the heart of mother russia, I never got that trick down.
One thing I really really love is "Schwytzerdntsch", which is basically a hardcore dialect of german, spoken in switzerland. its aso very close to a dialect spoken in a small part of austria, and boy i tell ye... that one is weird. If you watch swiss television, and people talk schwytzerdntsch... they get subtitles
Let me check if I can find some music videos in that dialect...

Well I'm a native speaker of Spanish and I understand english to almost perfection, can read and write it fluently. Portuguese is a close second, all you have to do is change pronunciation and cadence and get in the flow of it.
If spoken slowly I can get an idea of what people are talking about in italian/french, but no way I can understand a single word of german ... So honestly the English/German link is missing on me
Seriously ... German and English sound so obscenely remote to each other to my ears that I fail to see the link on them.
