Hubsi Kramer does a great ****** impression, which is funny per se, those subtitles are just a cheap attempt to grab some of those laughs.

Well, I never took a German language class and never read any "learn German" books, all I did was watch German television (immediately post-Romanian revolution that was about the only non-local TV we got). Took me about half a year of sporadic watching to be able to understand the basics pretty well simply by association with similar English words, and about two years to understand almost everything. Could have never done that if they wouldn't be remarkably similar... tried the same with Hungarian for over 6 years before that (my city is pretty close to the border, communist Romania television sucked, so we watched Hungarian TV a lot), I also tried to get some kind of lessons from Hungarian-speaking friends, never managed to understand much of it.
I still can't read German properly though (only slowly), and writing it is even more bothersome (plus, nowadays I watch stuff almost exclusively in English).

I thought that fact that he was spouting all the inaccurate bull**** we heard in the days and weeks leading up to the nerf going on TQ just made it *more* funny.
And no, I don't speak German. German and English are close enough that someone speaking German sounds a lot like someone speaking gibberish English (verses other languages that are obviously other languages), but I can't understand any of it. ... besides, I've said all I'm going to say. Also to be helpful, Romanian and German are both Indo-European languages, whilst Hungarian isn't. So you'd have a definite leg up with German. Plus, Romanian's Slavic influences probably help one understand German.

You say that in a sarcastic way, I'd say that in a mostly serious tone (at least for languages with a latin root) Italian, French, English, German - those are a given, if only by the sheer familiarity (the former) or exposure (the latter). Spanish and Portugese, not that easy (lower exposure but pretty familiar) yet undestandable. Dutch, Sweedish and Norwegian... not so much, at least in context and in person it's not impossible (but since almost everybody that speaks one of those is bound to also speak English, not so important). It's the slavic and fino-hungric ones that are a problem.

you crazy? dutch is pretty much a hybrid language right in the middle of english and german. if you understand one of the latter, you can understand dutch (with a wee bit of effort). If you happen to speak both, dutch is really easy
edit: also, stackenblocken

Anyone even slightly familiar with latin can tell you that, it's just the thought of you fumbling through languages with their own nuances/dialects after watching the news and saying to yourself 'language decoded' that amuses me, more so than your usual bitter 'let's heap scorn onto anyone who's kissed a girl/didn't like the original fallout/enjoys christmas, because they're obviously dumb as bricks' approach to things

There's a whole series of these videos, this video clip with varying subtitles. The comedy value relies on not understanding the actual words and I think some are very funny. Examples (not necessarily the best ones):
Banned from Xbox Live! (Part 2 - Wavey wavey!) Red ring of death Ronaldo leaving Man U Lampard to sign with Inter etc etc
Regarding the similarity between English and German, they are not so similar as to be able to understand vocabulary without already knowing the words. Whereas in Spanish and Italian for example 'To Walk': Sp - Caminar --- It - Camminare. In German it's 'Gehen'. The Sp & Italian are very similar gramatically, and understanding one you can reasonably guess the other. The english and german vocabulary is very, very different. There may be words in common as all 'latin' languages have to a degree, but it's unreasonable to suppose anyone could understand german or english from their knowledge of the other.
Further, german, like french, italian and spanish, has gender which english does not.
The girl - das MSdchen The boy - der Junge
The one thing they do have in common however, and I guess is what Akita T was implying, is that they are the closest 'structurally'. Like Spanish and Italian, eng/ger share a very similar structure which makes it easier for a speaker of one to learn the other. Eg:
English - The red ball German - die rote Kugel (literally 'the red ball') French - la boule rouge (literally 'the ball red') Spanish - la bola roja (" " " ") Italian - la palla rossa (" " " ")
There are other similarities (and differences) but while you can concede that english & german share a similar structure, the vocab is totally different and unlike spanish/italian (for example), you cannot make a reasonable guess as to what something means based on your understanding of the other language. I remember hearing Swedish and Norweigan were Similar with the Finnish being the odd one out in scandinavia (could be other way round tho!). Anyone? -------------
