Approaching Targets
I always read that you should not approach targets in a straight vector since you are easier to hit with hybrids and projectiles.
So, If target A is 40km away and I am in my Wolf, how do I approach in an arc? Do you click to the right or left of the target to create some transversal?
I am confused about how people go about doing this.
I am assuming the general approach is to create some level of transversal movment relative to the intended target and that does require ômanualö piloting (no orbit, approach or keep at distance quick commands).
Comments?

I've never really had to do this, but I've read the same thing.
I imagine that it depends largely upon what your opponent and yourself are flying. If you're in a wolf, you can probably tank a few volleys, so keeping transversal isn't as important. If you're in a ceptor, on the other hand, then you'll want to approach by taking numerous 45 degree turns all while trying to keep up transversal as much as possible.
You might familiarize yourself with the various tracking speeds of the guns your opponents are likely to fit, then show angular velocity on your overview.

Set your orbit to the orbit range you want and use it, it will orbit you into range :)

just for clarity - if my orbit is 500km (AC's) and the target is (example) 40km - selecting the target, hitting orbit and then MWD will orbit me towards the target in a tight arc?

If your orbit is set to 500km, and the target is only 40km, its going to start your orbit away from the target (sense its trying to get to the 500km range) the tightness of the arc (lol cant help but to laugh at that) depends completely on your ships speed and agility.. to much speed and not enough agility will cause a wider arch, to much agility and not enough speed will cause you to slow down to keep a tight arch....
Thats why agility and speed are important to keep up transversal

I have my wolf set up with MWD II and 1 x Nano II - to help with agility - TY for the help

Oh god no. Using orbit, if you're not already at the range you want to orbit, will either move closer or farther in a direct line. This means no transversal.
Turn on angular velocity and practice approaches with a buddy. The smaller the ship you're approaching the more transversal you'll need.
A simple way to think about it is just to put what you're approaching in the middle of the screen and then click like halfway between the edge of the screen and the target. After a bit of flight move the target to the center again and repeat. |

But it depends on the ship though... With blaster ships its generally a good idea to get to range asap to start laying down the hurt (ships like this would be the thorax, megathron, rokh and the like. The man who smiles when things go wrong has thought of someone to blame it on. |

I think we're going offtopic. Indeed, the fit of the ship will usually determine the tactic, short-range fitted ships will want to close the distance quickly. But what if the ship you're closing in against is fitted for long-range? Chances are a good bit of your buffer will be whittled away by the time you get into range to deal any significant damage. Then maybe you decide it's a better idea to disengage but you're already in warp disruptor range? Oh bummer.
The only thing left to do is approach and die in blaze of glory. Which is the point of the topic. Keep transversal high so those guns can't track you while Ride of the Valkyries plays while you come in hot to deliver Walker, Texas Ranger-style justice. |

As a general tip, I'd suggest never ever clicking approach to get into range like that, as your target will have hardly any trouble hitting you.
I always manually fly at an angle to mantain some transveral and get closer to the target in question. Once you get close enough, press the orbit button.

WTB 500km AC, 5mil yo?
Seriously though, what the above posters said, manually click left or right or target and change direction as you get closer. It helps to have transversal/angular velocity columns up in overview as well.

Offtopic but if you want to be pro-est instead of clicking in space always Align to on a celestial object like a roid belt or planet. Move the camera, find the next celestial object, Align to.
When you start taking damage or tacklers are getting near just warp out.
