Greetings fellow pod pilots. Let me briefly introduce myself first - I am 32 male, divorced, and been playing EvE since beta.
You're probably wondering this post is all about.. Well I just want to make it clear that this is not some troll post. I genuinely feel what I say. I'm expecting a little one (well technically my exwife is) (but me too) and I guess thats the reason why I am kinda sentimental.
Okies, to the point - have you ever counted how many times "smoke" or "beer" or "booze" or "******" have been pronounced in local channel? I'm not blaming any single solar system, its actually pretty much the same all around the EvE universe. Its almost as like CCP is being sponsered by ********* and **********. I know thats not ht case, I'm just speaking metaphorically.
Well anyways, I'm going to be raising my kid (my ex-wife's kid to be exact) to become a brave and dignified EvE warrior, I do believe he will win EvE some 15-20 years from now. But all this crap about smokes and booze makes me think twice..
Honestly, I do not want my kid to become an alcoholic.
How many corps are out there who ban flying under influence? How many non-smoking corps? How many vegans in EvE?
I know this may sound lame to you if you no have kids, you're prolly some loser who plays online spaceship game game at xmas so I dont think you make a nice population to sample from. But if you have kids (or expecting) (or have exs expecting) then I hope you hear what I say..
Why not ban smoking and drinking (alcholic beverages) from EvE? I really enjoy the way CCP just beeps out words like **** and ******** and ******** from forums and local chat and etc.. But people can still say, for example, "ooh i drunk 11 beers and i keeled a velator" or "i keeled his titan 1vs1 while i was out on smoke break"..
Is this fair?
I know there are a lot of mature players who drink alcoholic substances and smoke tobbacco or worse (they will burn in hell) but still.. Is this the spaceship game we want to inherit to our children?
I say no.
Please x up in the thread if you agree with me, so we can take it to the CSM. I do belive this is a serious issue threatening our young ones.
Thank you.

I'm a single-dad and there are WAY more things to worry about than what is being said in Local chat in EVE
I would have given this post a deeper response but the line "...smoke tobbacco or worse (they will burn in hell)" made me realise you're an idiot and there isn't any point

I guess this is a sign from God I am online when you post this insult.
I would be truly glad if you could elaborate on how that makes me an idiot..
Obviously, you are not expecting any kids

2003 beta player, huh?
Has someone paid for another troll-job on the forums?
Iirc, the only reason drug-smuggling wasn't a profession from the get-go was the EU's stance on drugs and games. This game is about as far from your version of "virtuous" as can be.
This IS the internet, after all, and the seat of unrestricted, largely uncensored cultural exchanges that are the bane of protectionist parents around the world.
And no, I don't have kids of my own. If they did, they'd play Eve from day one just for the huge range of opinions, lifestyles and problem solving skills used by the international communities here. And, I might add, they would understand the effects of all those things you mentioned, both positive and negative, because they'd be exposed to them all their lives anyway.
I still call troll, though.

Great now you want to control what i say or do in my virtual reality as well as the real life i deal with on a day to day basis. I apologize if i took this out of context, as i just was not able to give it a thorough read.

Edited by: Iria Ahrens on 24/12/2008 22:35:53 Depending on the age of your kid you might be being a bit overprotective.
No amount of protection you give, other than locking him in a closet, is going to keep him from being exposed to foul language, sexual dialog, and violence not including other things you might find offensive--another religion perhaps?.
If you feel your kid is ready to play a game where people are going around killing one another, then foul language should be a non-issue. If he's not ready for the violence, then he's probably not ready for the language and other subjects covered in local chat either.
--- I recognize Kachak from the last few times I've played EVE. No problem with any of his posts I recall. I don't think he's trolling, just going through an overprotective phase due to a sudden new responsibility. --

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe smoking *** and drinking **** in a virtual reality is as bad as in the real world.
Especially when you're actually smoking and drinking IRL and reflecting it upon your ingame personality.

Except that these are socially acceptable ways of relaxing in many countries.
Hence, perfectly legitimate in a multicultural space such as Eve.

As soon as a kid has to go to school, you lose a significant amount of control over what they are exposed to. I think a parent's role in that situation is to teach their child how do deal with these things, and to lead by example. Gain the child's respect--not friendship--so they wish to be like you. Let them see how you deal with these problems when you are exposed to them, and they will likely mimic your behavior because their respect compels them to.

My thanks first of all for your recognition.
I would agree with you if my kid began playing EvE at 26 like i did, but he isn't even born yet (2 months and counting). I want him to play as early as possible (6-7 years I hope) and that's wy I am worried.
Seriously, get online now, and watch local for 5 minutes. Do you think its suitable for a 6 year old?
I think CCP should work harder on making this game a child-safe game.

This game is rated "T" for Teen, not meant to be played by kids except by parents' discretion.

Excess is bad. But neither is inherently bad. The one thing that has always surprised me about Christians--not saying the OP is Christian, but the Abolition movement in the US was supposedly a "Christian" movement--is the assertion that drinking is bad. They all seem to conveniently forget that Jesus' first miracle was turning water to wine. Thus, if Christianity has anything to do with following the example of Jesus, we know how he feels on the subject. Just don't drink to excess, there are now several studies that prove drinking wine and beer in moderation can be good for you.
As for smoking. Yes, it has some medicinal uses too. The main problem with this is it is not a private vice. Anyone standing too close is exposed to you. So be considerate of asthmatics and others with allergies and go do it in private. If you go to a restaurant and the smoking section is not in a separate partition, wait until you leave. That's all. --

I know what you mean...
if I ever have kids, they are NOT going anywhere near eve until they are age 25+ and with strong character and good ethics...
but yeah, I think you are focusing on the wrong things here...
the references to substance use is nothing compared to the "Is okay to be nasty/ebil so long as you are doing it with in the system" message that IS eve...
Scamming, robbing, trickery, manipulation, stealing and indiscriminate murder...
no, I aint letting my future kids near eve....
I am in too deep myself though...
edit:
and yes, after 4 years of eve.... I can honestly say I am a less innocent, less trusting, and worst human being than I was before I started playing eve.
I only made that realization recently... and yeah... makes me sad.
part of me says: "is just a game"... but yeah, I find my thinking changed to be more nasty/self-fish/self-serving in RL ...
have to "correct" myself in some occasions.
thank god I realized that XD..

Yeah Merry Christmas to you too you...
(That's a 'no' by the way, this game isn't meant for kids, and do you know what, that's bloody brilliant and thatĘs the way it should stay)
p.s My sarcasm detector may be broken, so ho ho ho if this is a troll...
