If the Federation can't bear to deal with traitors in such a way, the people have recourse. You can petition your Senators, mail the President. Tell the media.
Eturrer was a traitor, and his death was entirely deserved. The method was a symbolic one fitting the crimes he committed. For the more repressive and fascist regimes of the cluster, taking care of things tidily behind closed doors might serve, but in the Federation we take those who have wronged us, drag them kicking and screaming into the light of day, and leave NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER as to their fate.
If your gaze falls upon a Federation so different from what you thought it was, that you cannot bear to live within it, leave. You have that right. But decrying our leaders as evil and immoral and not acting in the peoples interest is laughable at best when the capacity for all that has happened has been there all along, among the people.
The people of the Federation are just that, no more and no less. It's very easy for the Sisters to bleat over a violation of rights, when they have no stake in the matter. Eturrer, however, violated my rights, the rights of every member of the Federation, and the trust he was given. The State and the Empire and the Republic may disagree with our methods, but they for the most part, always have. We are ruled, first and foremost, by the people. The people have spoken.
In the Federation, there are always protests happening, people picketing or sending out petitions or the like. If the people were so aghast, as some here have said, where are the objections, the protesters? I suppose Mr. Blaque and his Black Eagles are bashing down each and every single door belonging to someone who disagrees with how we deal with treason. Or perhaps, just maybe, the people are united on this?
Regardless of what the Federation does or doesn't do, it is still my Federation. I live in it, help supply its markets and pay my taxes and help keep the pirate menaces, among others within our borders, down to a minimum. I am but one voice within the vast chorus, but when Eturrer was rend asunder for his crimes, he was rent by MY VOICE. I support my fellow citizens, those who cannot speak after they were silenced by that traitor.
Like the tsunami that crashed down and ended Eturrer, we will descend upon any others who wrong us. You can try to silence us one by one through treachery, you can try to force us to yield, but we will find you, in your moments of weakness, and we will destroy you.
