Ok people so say you got yourself a gang of 5 t2 pilots heading your way, and all you got are 20 men in t1 and t2 crafts, and non of them can totally fly a t2 what do we do? if the gang is a 6 man gang will we survive if we spidertank? or gate camp ? The freedom to do what you want, how you want, and when you want is not given to you, it is earned through tears, blood, sweat, and freindship. Depends on which 5 ships they are and what you have.
If you have a mixed BC/T1 cruiser gang and 5 Deimos pilots show up, you'll most likely win, as an example.

Depends on player skill, in game skills, coordination and ship types. 20 vs 5-6 should be terribly one sided in your favor so there is that aspect of it. Also, t2 ships are not necessarly better. A t1 cruiser is typically better than a t2 frigate for outright combat. The same is true in regards to a BC vs a HAC. BS's are king until you start bringing in capitals or t2 BS's.

You know...It's a tough call.
It really comes down to skill. If you have a good FC and a plan, I'd take them on.
But know this, I was in a gang of 8 HACs and we went up against 15 t1/t2 mix of mostly crusiers with a few AF and Inty mixed in.
I got to play FC (one of the few times) and they stood and fought.
It didn't work out for them.

its all about intell, and if all your scout gave you is 5 t2 ships, you should be calling him as your primary.
if your in a mixed gang with proper player distributions on frigs acting as tacklers, crusers and BCs/BSs as DPS and some ewar you should kill them no matter what. however if you where to have a corp roaming OP with t1 cruisers and frigs only I would say this:
5 inties, you will kill 5 AFs, you will kill 5 HACS, you should be able to get them all while only losing atmost 50% of your fleet depending on their ship types and piloting abilities (your close range VS deimos isn't a good idea for example)
spider tanking is very good so long as you can coodinate and they 1) either lack DPS to break the tank, 2) have light or no Ewar ships.

Why even bother with the T2?

/agreed
The scenario you are describing makes me think you are in this particular situation: You are in 0,0.. mainly ratting. From time to time, you have nearby reds coming in to harass you. If that scenario is correct, then its pretty safe to assume that they have a few advantages on you already:
1. They know how to operate well as a group 2. They are quite familiar with the area they are raiding 3. The ships that have been chosen have been reasonably successful in the past. 4. Probably more SP per pilot than your fleet will have on average.
You, on the other hand, have some advantages that you mentioned.. but you need to be aware of the challenges as well:
1. Numbers - This can be great.. if they know how to obey and listen. Just because they are willing to fight doesn't mean they know how to fit a ship, how to fly it, or even what you mean when issuing orders. It also could mean that they will "fight to the end..", even when its better to retreat and regroup.
2. Variety - This is assuming that all the pilots you have in fleet have a nice variety of PVP ships available to them. If so, defeating a small force of T2 ships should be a fairly simple task. Just make sure you have a good spread of DPS, EWar, Tacklers, and scouts. However, if the above scenario is true.. then you very likely have a bunch of (excuse the expression.. but it once applied to me as well) "wannabe" PVP pilots. Which means they'll bring out their biggest, baddest ship.. and your entire fleet will be totally useless because you can't support or compliment (i.e. including spider tanking)each other in combat.
If the above scenario is true, the following will also be true depending on the make up of the enemy force:
5 Inties: Pretty much in this situation, all you are doing is wasting your time chasing them around unless you have some good inty pilots yourself. You might get lucky, but more likely you'll chase them system to system, and they'll double back and might get a smaller straggler, at most two. Figure 5% to 10% fleet loss.
5 AFs: Prior to QR, these weren't too much of a threat. Now.. the Wolf packs are pretty dangerous. If they have configured their ships right, you're lower SP pilots will be in big trouble irregardless of what ships they are in. If you run into one of these, expect some pretty good losses, with maybe a kill or two. If you have some EWar though, this will pull the teeth out of them pretty quick. Generally, Wolfpacks tend to be very aggressive due to their increased damage resistance (sig radius, tracking changes, etc.). Just learn to use that to your advantage.
5 HACs (Assuming close range HACs): I'm going to say expect very heavy losses here unless you have some BC/BS support. If you have BC/BS support, then it should be a pretty one sided conflict as long as you can keep those HACs within range and tackled. However, it will be up to you to force the encounter as HAC pilots aren't as much risk taskers as AF pilots.
I only do diplomancy because I haven't found you.. yet. |

I would say, get them in an ambush.
As mentioned above, it depends on the ship types of the incoming fleet but lets say that your 20 ppl could theoretically kill them to provide a base for the following thoughts.(dps/tank related compared to the economical background).
Imagine you would be in that 5 ppl fleet. You would want some easy kills. You wouldn't want to mess with a camp of 20 ppl unless you're absolutely sure that you can handle them.
So what they do is getting infos on you and your fleet. Don't let that happen! Either hide your fleet or outmanoeuvre them if possible. They wont engage an unknown fleet, so form a small group and try to get their scout(s) first.
Once it's done, you can try to make them accidentally run into you or try something else, that mostly depends on the region and your options on how to move around.
But keep always in mind that, they will only go for a fight if they (think that they) can win it. Use that in your favour!
