==The ability to support yourself in 0.0 space.==
As a new player this is something i see a lot in various topics. What i don't get is what exactly meant by it? in other words.. what IS needed to be self-supporting in 0.0 space? wich ships should you minimally fly to be able to rat "safely" etc? Or are there other things meant by this?
thanks!

Basicly that you can take care of yourself and not to rely on handouts for maintaining your operation. Usually when I establish an operating base in 0.0 I travel light and take the basic necesseties. This includes a ship to rat in, few different fits for your ship and ammo BPOs. With amarr just some standard crystals should be enough. You can then either bring more stuff as needed yourself, rat for modules/minerals or rely on your corp for any logistic work. The result is that I basicly could stay as long as I wished in 0.0 with just the things I have there.
I don't think there are any minimal ship requirements, but it is more efficient to rat in bigger ships. But anything that allows you to kill the spawn there should be sufficient. This is ofcourse if you are a combat pilot. Other professions propably have some different cosideration to think of.

Use drobeboats for ratting, they don't need any ammo, well drones of course. And ratting safely, well keep an eye on intel channel (if you have that) and keep an eye on local. Having a scout (boring as hell but can save your rear), yelling on TS/Vent if a red shows up in a system next to that you are ratting in.
Also if you live out from a POS, see if your corp have a ammo factory at that POS, donate the loot from the rats, so that there is a bit of flow of minerals through reprocessed loot.
If there is a Outpost and the Industry slots are public, you can buy ammo BPO's and other kind of BPO's you think you are going to need and make ammo and moduls from reprocessed rat loot.

At the most basic level: The ability to generate more ISK in a given period than you lose.
How you go about it can vary dramatically.
For me, I rat in a carrier. People think its crazy, but the alliance I'm in has so many cyno generators online, its actually faster, easier and, safer for me to dock the drones and jump out than it is to try aligning to a safe spot and warping out with a battleship.
Just 5000 Nitrogen Isotopes in the cargo hold, and I can literally go anywhere in home space in seconds.
However, for your average player, the key elements, I think, are these:
1) Access to a station with reprocessing facilities. Whether its in low sec, NPC 0.0 or whatever, you absolutely have to have a place to reprocess or sell what you loot. If its not profitable to see the modules that drop on the market, extract the minerals from them and sell that way.
2) A ship capable of killing battleship rats, while tanking two or three battleships dishing damage. Battleships and battlecruisers are most commonly used. I've also heard of people using Command ships and Heavy Interdictors, too. This goes for whether you're mining or ratting, since you need to be able to clear the belts. I've been told of Hulks that can tank battleships (even know a guy with one that does it easily) packing sentry drones capable of taking down whatever, but those are almost as expensive to fit as a CNR. Its not common, that's for sure.
3) Intel. You cannot function as an independent in 0.0 without knowing people. Its just too damned hostile out there to independents. I won't say it can't be done, but you're certainly not going to be as efficient about it without support from the locals. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.

Great guys, thanks a lot!
this BPO thingie is something im noooot entirely sure of how that works, but ill try and sort it out ;) im a pretty lowskill pilot (4M) and still have about a months worth of basis training before i start my way up to my battlecruiser. only then when i have enough ill make the jump to 0.0. Doing missions now but gathering and learning as much info as i can on the way there.

Best way is to go with an alliance. And I see that you are in one. Congrats! As a newbie you can (a) run missions for the pirates (b) gang up with other newbies and rat together (c) gang up with oldbies and participate in their ratting/missioning/mining or whatever.
Once you are able to pilot a well-fit battleship then you can do pretty well by killing rats in the belts and maybe in the cosmic anomalies and exploration complexes. For more on those last two things, go to the missions & complexes forum and read the stickies about exploration.
............. Now recruiting like-minded pilots. |

It's good to be able to make your own ammo, particularly if you fly a Raven or other ship with expendable ammunition. Train up metalurgy to like II, and Production Efficiency to say III, and throw your ammo bpo into a ME research slot (20 is completely sufficient, less for some ammo types).
You might consider training up salvaging and heading out to 0.0 with that skill, assuming corp mates leave wrecks behind. You can make a lot of isk salvaging and gathering loot left behind by other ratters.
