I'm considering starting a second account to train up an alt. How do most of you with multiple accounts find yourself playing them most of the time?
1) One at a time 2) Simultaneously, alt + tabbing 3) Simultaneously in windowed mode with 2 monitors 4) Other, please elaborate. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. |

Most ppl i know of use either: 5) Simultaneously, windowed mode, window smaller than monitor 6) Simultaneously, Dual-boxing (on multiple computers), one or more per PC --- Sig Starts Here --- Lord Haur - Imperial Academy Logistical Support

I tended to have two clients in windowed mode on one monitor. My second monitor is for complaining about EVE on IRC ;/

Ive found that you need a fairly powerful graphics card to use two clients, one on each monitor. Mine can do it, but at severely reduced framerate. So i just have the two clients windowed on one monitor or dual box and have one on my desktop and one on my laptop.

while I guess SLI isnt supported, Im runnin dual geforce 8800 GT OC's with 4 gb of ram and an AMD 6000 x2.
I just run both on the same machine fullscreen and alt tab. Its useful to make a fleet and put both toons in the fleet, then you can warp both at once.
I get 70-120 FPS when Im doing that. Alternatively I have a laptop capable of running the upgraded graphics but just run the older set. I only use that when Im not at home, I could do one on each system but its just easier for me to alt tab them

Sometimes simultaneously, alt-tabbing. But mostly I play my two characters at separate times. They do not cooperate. In fact, the second one is masquerading as a newbie, has infiltrated a medium-sized alliance, and is trying to work his way toward pulling off a massive corporate theft.
My situation may not be standard.

Maybe non-standard, but uncannily similar to my own

At the moment I'm alt + tabbing. Both clients on premium graphics. But I'm planning on buying a second monitor

The best way is to have two computers or one computer and a laptop. I know that many of us can not do this, but it has proven to be the best solution. It also depends on what you are doing in EVE. Mining and hauling with two accounts on one computer works good if your mining-ship ist protected by drones. So you can neglect that window for a while when you command your hauler. It also works fine to operate a shuttle on autopilot in one window and doing something else in the other. You will have severe problems ratting or fighting simultaneously on two accounts, even operating two computers.

I created my second account last week, it's great being able to train 2 characters at once.
But at the moment my alt just sits in station training, until he's at a point similar to my main. May take a while, but the wait is worth it :)

This is how i do mine. Its nice cause it makes it less stressful for both computers plus framrates and lag still arn't bad at all. But it does take two computers which may not possible for everyone. ____________________________________________ When going to a party with wine, women, and song. To the OP ... the problem with trying to answer your question is that the real factors have a lot to do with both the equipment that is available and the activities of the characters involved. Some equipment will let you do more than others and some activities lend themselves more to the efficient use of multiple accounts than others do.
I have multiple computers and multiple monitors.
The way I do things depends on a combination of the equipment's capabilities and what I'm doing. So, I'm not running the same way all the time. For different tasks I run different configurations.
On my older systems I have trouble running more than one instance of EVE in a window, so if I'm running more than one account on one of those systems I tend to alt tab. The exception being if I have both accounts mining with industrials. There, the activity level required is so minimal that even though the computer runs the two sessions in windows very badly, it lets me see what is going on with each one and I don't have to interact with it much.
On my newer system I can easily run more than one account in a window at the same time.
If I'm alt-tabbing I can run more accounts per system than if I'm windowing.
I rarely run more than one account windowed on one monitor. If I'm running Windowed Clients it's almost always on separate monitors.
Mining works very well with multiple accounts. I don't have the efficiency of several real people but can make good use of several accounts at the same time, some mining and some hauling.
Mission running it is useful but not as nearly as efficient. I can have one guy Keep Distance from the other so I only have to steer one ship but I'm really not popping rats any faster since I'm popping them faster than I can target new ones with just one account. Same thing during salvaging. The only thing I really save on, is if I have one ship as the combat ship and the other as the salvager, whom I usually leave orbiting the acceleration gate until I'm done with the zone, then I fly him in to salvage it before going on to the next.
Alternatively, I'll have one account running and salvaging missions by itself while others mine in industrials. That seems to work out the best. Then when it comes time to haul to market I may use several accounts to do that depending on how much I need to haul.
The other thing having multiple accounts has gotten me was the availability of alts to run R&D agents. They don't do anything but sit in the Agents base and run his missions once a day, then I go run my mains. One thing to keep in mind. Having more than one account is in no way as efficient as having two people run those accounts. You have a lot of over head just running characters around that takes away from the time you can be productive. Also, you end up diluting your resources. The more accounts/characters you have the more ships and skill books you need to buy to support them - and since you are not as efficient as if a separate person were running each account, you can have trouble making enough money to support them all. Of course overall playing time is a factor in that. My biggest problem is that I set myself up to play the game in a certain way - but then real life comes along and interferes with my gaming so that I'm not able to play the way I had planned. So, I've still got all these characters to support - but I'm not able to play as much as I'd like and thus am always having cash flow problems. If I could have played as much as I expected when I planned what I was going to do - I'd be fine ... but those character over heads are there whether your making money with them or not. So ... more characters means more over head. Think about that before you add another account. Faction Schools Orbiting vs. Kiting |

Thanks for all the info everyone.
Basically I was thinking of having a Mining/Industry main on one account and a Trade/Hauling character on another. Using one to haul the goods back to station and set up Buy/Sell orders. With the possibility of later on having a Mission/PVP character on another account.
Currently my set up is one PC but I may build another one this year. My current PC runs or has run AoC, WoW, WAR, Fallout with all the graphics turned up with no problems. Haven't tried the real test of running Crysis with all the bells & whistles turned on.
