WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN, WE'VE MISSED YOU WINDY!
Firstly, let me apologise. Some of you may remember my critically acclaimed "Who is better - BoB or Goons" survey from this time last year. At the time, a large number of my fans asked me to repeat the survey with a little more rigour, but until now I really couldn't be arsed.
However since I've been stuck at work with an Eve connection thru my phone that's too crappy for me to safely undock I thought I'd put my time to good use.
It may surprise my critics to know that this has actually been conducted honestly and in good faith. Some of us are actually interested in these kinds of trends. I've broadened the scope of the research to include general attitudinal trends towards the main alliances. I'd welcome any feedback as to how I can improve the research, and will aim to conduct it quarterly to allow us to benchmark results.
So, without further ado, let me present the findings of the first ever "Voice of the Windypopulation".
THAT'S AMAZING, HOW DID YOU DO IT?
To ensure the validity of the findings 70 pilots were selected to provide a representative cross-section of the playerbase demographic. So, er, yeah - I sat in Jita and randomly clicked on people. Some were extremely helpful - thank you, you know who you are - and some said "Oh, it's you - **** off". I conducted short (3 minute) interviews, and interviewees replies were unprompted, which has led to some interesting findings.
WOW, THIS SOUNDS LIKE SOME REALLY PUCKER RESEARCH, NOT JUST LIKE YOUR USUAL CRAP
Why thank you. Whilst this research was primarily quantitative, interviewees were able to provide some qualitative information, which provides a valuable context to the quantitative findings. Oh, and people weren't allowed to 'vote' for their own alliance.
OK I'M BORED NOW, HURRY UP
Ok, let's get stuck in to the findings.
____________________
MOST FAMOUS ALLIANCE
This first question is intended to identify the alliance that 'stands out' from all others. That's not to say it's perceived as the 'best' or that it constitutes a value judgment, simply that it's the first one that comes to mind.
1. BoB (52%) 2. Goons / Goonswarm / Goonfleet (23%) 3. NC (12%)
Probably no great surprise - whether for good or bad reasons it's predictable that BoB would be the most 'notorious'. There appeared to be confusion amongst pilots about Goonfleet / Goonswarm's precise name, however it's also not surprising that this vocal alliance were second. Interestingly, many respondants referred to 'NC' or 'Northern Coalition' as a single entity. I did consider correcting them, but I thought the raw responses were fairly illuminating. ____________________
MOST POWERFUL ALLIANCE
1. BoB (43%) 2. NC (35%) 3. TCF (10%) 4. AAA (9%)
At 43% BoB again came out top here, however the NC 'alliance of alliances' wasn't that far behind.
____________________
MOST FUN ALLIANCE
1. Goons (32%) 2. BoB (26%) 3. Goodfellas (12%) 4. Burn Eden (8%)
Several interesting trends here. Goons were 'top', with BoB a relatively close second. Personally, I'd expected Goons to be further ahead in this category. A surprise 'third' was Goodfellas - many of those who mentioned them commented on how light-hearted they appeared on the forums. 4th place also produced a surprise result - Burn Eden were considered to be an Alliance.
____________________
MOST MEMORABLE 2008 'MOMENT'
1. MAX campaign (45%)
There was a vast 'long tail' of responses here, with very few standouts. However the Max campaign was the only recurrent answer. Most respondants, unsurprisingly, considered events that happened in their own alliance to be the 'most memorable'. I also had to sit through some immensely tedious tales of supposedly 'exciting' moments of FW derring-do. God bless 'em.

Your survey didnt shed light on anything new or interesting. Im willing the bet most of the "best of" list will contain Goons,BOB,or the North.
Perhaps your surveys should go deeper into detail with questions like: Who are the 0.0 alliances at war and why? or Which alliance would shake the balance of eve the most if they dissapeared today? Not a flame but a little substance to the survey would be nice.

Wonderful work by mr. pops!
THE INTERNET. truly does have all the answers!
In a related note, what happened to The Swarm's Orca Jihad Campaign? I certainly thought that was the most relevant event of 2008, or any year for that matter!

How can you ask people a question like that then accept "NC" as an answer?
"Who is your favourite allaince?"
"The South"

Because the fact that the NC is considered to be a single entity by so many is interesting in itself. If I'd known it would upset you so much I'd have done it differently :( :(

I actually find it more interesting that the goons or rsf didn't rank in the most powerful alliances and that NC did. Did they even come close?

seems like the NC/anti-bob side is a little (understandably)hesitant to accept this as an unbiased report.
is there anyone on either side who if they made this survey would be trusted? or is that just not possible to have an unbias view of the matter.
cause it seems like cool info to know if it were true :)

I remember quite vividly in the days leading up to the failed invasion of Delve, that every trade and mission hub had anti-bob alts in local spamming the evilness that bob was. Its not as common now, but I still see it when traveling through empire. Also notable that nearly every article that comes out in the real world eventually mentions BoB, and the only time other alliances get mentioned is because of something that happened between them and BoB. Its also hard not to get comments in local when passing through from very random people. So BoB being the most Famous/infamous, I don't see how any one could dispute that.
