pa1nbringr is right, each post brings pa1n.
Like some sort of water torture, the same basic premise is worked and reworked, ad nauseum.

Effective gate camping is not done in one system and definitely not just one gate. You first camp both sides of the gate you intend to blockade. Then if your numbers are large enough you can extend your blockade out one more jump and camp for incoming pilots. This will make your blob look smaller and will give you more chances to get those quick pilots in frigates.
As far as scanner goes. That is the only way to determine when to lock on incoming targets coming out of warp. the Scanner is your friend.
If a reasonably sized force heads your way simply regroup, you are only 1 jump apart. Then decide to run or fight.

Either camp a JIP with a couple stiletto's and a BS, or use couple mobile warp disruptors. And remember, that anybody who has something good in their cargo will probably have tons of warp core stabs and a couple MWD's, so be ready to put at least 4 warp scramblers on them and a couple webbers.
Gate camping is still very profitable, as is ransoming miners in belts.
One of the most important things about gate camping is to plan your escape well. You have to be ready to move when the "good guys" send 10-20 battleships to kill you.

Just to clarify a few things, I am not a pirate, I am in an alliance and am attacking an alliance we are at war with. Also, I'm not overly looking to profit, it'd be nice too make a profit yes, but thats not what I am doing it for
