I have almost been scammed twice via trading scams and I know of a way to fix this problem. Both times I was looking to quickly sell a ship. I would put the ship in the trade window, they would put the isk, and the second I would hit accept they would change the amount to 1isk and hit accept. Both times I was a split second away from being scammed. After talking to one of these scammers, he said these kinds of scams are not enforced and that he gets many ships a day doing this method.
This problem could be fixed by simply adding a trade session timer. Whenever any change is made, it should make you wait five seconds before hitting accept. This way, if they change the order quickly, it wonGÇÖt let you accept for another 5 seconds. Another way would be to give you 5 seconds to cancel the trade after it is accepted just in case. For people who make frequent trades in corporations or to allies, maybe you could add a way to remove this timer based on standings (or allow people to change their personal timer like you can with the CSPA costs (or whatever they are called) for starting a convo or inviting to fleet.
I was lucky that I was not scammed, but I will never use the trade window again as it currently stands. This change could help people to have confidence in trade again and really limit the amount of petitions you get from players (and unhappy customers when you donGÇÖt give them their ship back). |

There is your problem, using the trade window. Traders and scammers rely on people being impatient, lazy, ignorant and above all greedy. .Always use contracts. If you get scammed using this method, it's your own responsibility, not CCP's.

1) don't use the trade window.
2) if someone changes the isk amount and scams you (or not for that matter), file a petition as CCP has deemed it a lag exploit. |

you guys are all missing the point... If CCP did this one small change to trade, it would drastically bring down the number of people being scammed. I like the trade windo feature for trading from person to person. Its sad I have to avoid it because it is too risky. |

You're missing the point of Eve. Scamming is allowed, even encouraged. And the choice to avoid it or not is up to you. Contracts are in the game to provide a secure method of exchange, the trade window is more intended for casual handing off of items between friends.
There's no need for any change, there are already secure systems for exchanging stuff, the trade window is just a quick and dirty way of getting items between people without any fees, at the expense of security in the exchange. If you want security in your exchange, then bite the bullet and pay the contract fee. |

#2 is (or should be) correct. Once one person has clicked "accept", any changes to the trade - ISK or items - by either side means that both parties have to click "accept" again. |

Much as I have no issue with the scams in eve, OP has a point. The in game mechanics for trading should't rely on split second changes to prices. It's like making it a clicking skill game out of the trade. It's not a clever and well thought out scam, it's not planned and plotted, it's just a bit of sneaky clicking.
OP's idea might work. Or make it so that once both party's agree, the deal is locked and seller gets a chance to look it over before hitting a button to finalise the trade?
But yeh, as things stand, never use the trade window to sell stuff to strangers. |

Negotiate a price, set up a contract. Or decide your acceptable price and list it on the market.
The best change would be for the "accept" option to be cleared if the trade is modified after you accept it. After all, you didn't accept THAT trade, you accepted what was on screen at the time. It's time to put an end to CCP's war on piracy. Fight your own battles and stop asking CCP to do it for you. |

The accept button is cleared when something changes. I think if you're going to do this, you should have a checkbox you can activate that allows you to review the trade before it is confirmed. You have it checked, it pops up like a contract, you give such and such, and you get such and such...if it's isk, write the amount in words like it is in contracts. Would be a simple fix. If the person doesn't have the review trade checkbox checked and still makes a bad trade...too bad for him. CCP would have provided a way to verify the trade. Let it stand. |
