Is there a method for pirating and the price to pay and the ethos behind it? I ask because I have had some really interesting pirate experiences recently from the outright ludicrous where I thought the person behind the controls must be 10 and lacking in an education to elite professionalism that made my jaw drop and want to change teams.
My main role in game is probing, and followed by tinkering. So in a nutshell, I go out, drop a few probes, note down Deadspace, Radar and Mag sites and then scoot back home and either grab a few buddies and go back and do it with them, due to either low sec or too hard for solo, or, when I am too busy, contract the bookmarks out and take a cut of whatever it is they find.
Now to the pirating stuff, when I am in high and low sec, often in low sec as thatÆs where the rewards are better. So I drop a multi, get a hit, start dropping probes and find nothing, move a few, find nothing, bah move on. Rinse repeat. However, some times I get busted, and I have to warp my butt out. One time I was busted at a planet dropping a probe, and pity for me I was not paying attention, was looking at the star map and noting down distances on a piece of paper and mapping out my best coverage when I got blasted.
The pirate didnÆt say a word till after I lost my Imicus, saying I should of paid better attention as they were quite shocked to see me. I had a good giggle as I felt like a crazy scientist overly engrossed in my calculations and stuffed up without paying attention (keep in mind I mostly play EVE at work with no speakers so I cant here the shots nor watch the screen 100%). After some idle chit chat, they were civil and allowed me to come back for my stuff, nothing fancy, just some probes and some trinkets (I donÆt have anything flash) so overall, not much lost. And they were more interested in fat miners and ratters, not some one in a tiny ship probing.
Another time I got busted red handed, I was doing a Deadspace site, nothing heavy as I lost not only one of my better ships but also 2 other corp mates in a deadspace run that went terribly out of hand û felt like a 10/10 run. Anyway, I did part A, went back and got a salvager and cleared it, then went and did part b. Halfway through part B a workmate asked what I was doing, pointing at screen asking 20 QÆs and then asked what are the white triangles, to which I pointed out they are wrecks and changed I then added them to my overview, and then added other objects so he could see æhow bigÆ EVE can be. After pointing that out for a few minutes and explaining game mechanics I say a new ship closing in on me, at this stage it was too late, I knew I had no time to get away, so I just aligned my ship to the nearest gate and waited.
Now this is where I question pirates and price scales. I was warp scrammed, energy drained and then asked to pay X amount. I looked at X amount and thought the guy must be dreaming as it was more than my ship. Then I thought about it again and realised it was more than my ship and the equipment and the insurance as I just put on, considering the ship was only a few hours old as I threw it together to do the deadspace run, so I was well aware of the costs. I told them to blow it. My ship blew, insurance email rolled in I was already aligned to the gate so my pod zipped on off.
Meh, no loss as I had already looted and salvaged a good chunk before hand and had a goods in the hanger from the previous nights ready to sell off (I invest my money more into goods than ISK)

Then I got the whole, I am so good, you should not be alone in low sec, I am your mum and I told you so speech from them, pfft whateverà.
My question in all this is where do some people get their pricing plan from or do some people really pay a bounty for more than a ships value? Seems like asking some one for a $200,000 ransom or else you will blow up some ones 4cyl, 2000 model Hyunda Excel.
If I was asked to pay maybe a % based off my ship and a guess on my gears I would of but this guy made it to my address book and has been filed in to the ôHandicapped Piratesö folder for not making a concerted effort to pirate. That or I am really off the mark some where, but please, correct me if I am wrong.
How does one charge in the area of piracy ?
Cheers

Considering you were running a site at the time he may have been gambling on you holding expensive loot/salvage in your cargobay

In his wall of inconsistent rambling OP probably means to ask "how do pirates decide on ransom amount?" _____________ I don't care what is nerfed, as long as it's not my "undock" button. |

I base ransom prices on ship cost + mods , however it can vary with age and if i have a ship scanner handy. .. ... |

This. Probably thought you might have faction stuff.
Usually pirates would not ransom a frigate. In general you try to charge the market price of the ship, pods you can charge how much you think they are worth in implants (eg slaves charge alot).

That's assuming you actually care about the answers you'd get from people who are too thick or too lazy (or both) to read a couple dozen lines of text. |

I would say ransoms are up to the feeling really. We caught a navy raven some time ago and asked for 2 billion, guy said he only had 1.6 billion and send it when we accepted that as a price. We did manage to scan him and turned out he was fitted with faction stuff and tech 2 rigs. So would have been a 4-5 billion loss for him and we would maybe have looted 1-1.5 billion from it. That luck was from a feeling that he was prob better fitted than tech 2. |

A pro would be in a helios with a sisters scan probe launcher, and a rigged out BS (will solo 5/10's and most BS heavy complexes) so his prices may have factored in what other people commonly use, as well (as another poster suggested) gambling on you having collected juicy loot from the plex itself.
PS CVops are pretty cheap, as are grav cap rigs; its mondo faster per scan and you are only going to die from dumbness or the extremes of bad luck.
