A few corpm8's and I were gate camping and destroyed a ship then all warped away from the sentry guns. Instead of waiting 20 minutes I jumped back to the gate after a few minutes and MWD'd to the gate and jumped into the next system.
After loading up into the next system I saw "Concord strikes you for a wrecking hit of 924!" and needless to say, my Battleship was toast before I could even align for warp to the next gate (I was on autopilot).
How many more changes are going to be made to this game to make it carebear friendly and anti-pirate? Sentry guns attack you even when u jump into the next system wtf?
The EVE news reads "Sentry guns have recently been upgraded in order to enable them to identify criminally flagged characters and they will now fire on any such characters that come within their range. The criminally inclined are advised to proceed with caution in light of these upgrades."
The "to proceed with caution in light of these upgrades" is the part that gets me. CCP why not be forthright and say exactly what the changes are rather than making some vague, contentless announcement?

The change is somewhat fine in my view, but I do not like the fact that the sentry guns and Concord are able to attack you while you are cloaked after entering a system. Concord and sentry guns should not be able to hit you untill you decloak.

they did say exactly what the changes are: "Sentry guns have recently been upgraded in order to enable them to identify criminally flagged characters and they will now fire on any such characters that come within their range."
shooting on some poor innocent traveller gets you criminally flagged, hence fair game for sentry guns, what's not to understand?

Well the sentry guns attacked me in a system where I had done nothing wrong... Thats the point!
Don't get me wrong, obviously all you carebears appreciate the "Mining Sim" aspect of this game and marginalize PVP. But for pirates this is a huge, devastating change!
The second part of my criticism stems from CCP's inability to communicate changes effectively, especially when changes are made that adversely affect pirating.

Sorry you got Aced, but the news was pretty clear. You performed an illegal act, you are branded a criminal, now you will be fired upon.
What's so hard to understand about that? There was no difference made between being in one system and jumping to another, it said very plainly, you are criminally flagged and WILL BE FIRED ON.

Man the PVPers whine just as much as the miners.
All I know is that as a miner, it's pret'near impossible to make a living in this game because hoardes of pirates get some sort of thrill out of popping defenseless thoraxes at gates.
Kinda like shooting fish in a barrel...
Esp. with 3 interceptors, 2 ravens, a megathron and 4 warp disruptors. I mean COME ON...!
Kinda like shooting fish in a barrel with a sherman tank... 6 of them, even.

Pirates + Sentry Guns = Bad Combination
It is pretty clear that piracy was meant to take place in low or no security space. So your arguement that you were not informed is without merit.
That sentry guns should somehow forget who you are and not attack you seems like a poor arguement also, most civilized nations can control their borders and scrutinize entry and exit.
The only point I can agree with is perhaps that the guns should not be able to hit you while you are cloaked. It might be argued that since you just hitched a ride on Concord jumpgate Concord might know where you materialized though.

Trev,
Under the rules of engagement, you would've remained criminally flagged to PC's so it shouldn't have been such a surprise that NPC's would see you as criminally flagged.
Read the flagging guide again and wait the appropriate time before moving systems (it just resets the timer, iirc).

Did¦t that text file say that if you got flagged and you jumped in to the next system you would not be flagged. But the "old" system would still remember you so if you waited 2 days and jumped back in you would still be flagged for the remaining ~15min .
I think that it is really stupid that the sentrys fire on flagged ppl and not just ppl with the old aggression timer active, was¦t the flagging system only going to help ppl kill orerats/pirates? .

I think the reason this made a news item was because of previous complaints that when CCP fixed bugs with the guns they didn't inform anyone.
(This led me to question Zombie's camping of Atlar, because it wasn't clear if they were exploiting broken gun range or whether they were instead damping a fixed gun and just being clever. - In fact it was the latter and that was okay.)
As a result, I think they're being a little more public about fixes to the guns. Jumping to the next system wasn't as far as I'm aware, meant to be a way to avoid punishment for your crimes, so that they fixed it shouldn't be a problem.
As to being more specific, I think it was fairly clear that the guns would open fire, how much more do you need to know?

Pirates aren't pvp'ers, they are pvc'ers (player vs carebears). They complain about not being able to shoot carebears without any risk in empire controlled space, ie, controlled by large empires which ahve tons of assets, research and especially huge fleets of ships at their disposal.
Carebears have the same "thing", only the other way around.
PVP'ers fight in wars and in 0.0, not in empire space against corps they don't even know.
Just get used to it that people whine about what they can't get (anymore), because "we are customers so f****n do what i say or i'll quit".

I think what he was reffering to is that prior to this patch, security effect were nto carried between systems; they were restricted to the system you were in.
This patch apparently changed that, but neglected to inform anyone of that fact.
So while it may be a reasonable change, it is still a Stealth Nerf.

Well, if you are criminally flagged, it carries over to the next system. They have pointed out that Sentries now shoot all criminally flagged players.
Hmm, all I can say to Pirates is... stop calling carebears 'stupid and whiners'. --------------

Originally by: Harry Voyager I think what he was reffering to is that prior to this patch, security effect were nto carried between systems; they were restricted to the system you were in.
This patch apparently changed that, but neglected to inform anyone of that fact.
So while it may be a reasonable change, it is still a Stealth Nerf.
From "Patch 1424 to 1548 addresses Bug Fixes and Improvements"
Quote:
If a character is criminally flagged, the flag stays active for 15 minutes _after_ the criminal activity. The timer does not expire after jumping between solar systems. If the player commits another criminal act while the flag is active, the timer restarts.
No stealth nerf, no error. Just a bugfix to make it behave the way it was supposed to work. Aka criminal tag remains after gating. Criminal tag = turret shot.

Please change the title of this to Eve's dumbest criminal.
If only you had fraps, we could produce a video show of this and send you 1000isk for sending in any entry that makes it to the final cut.

Edited by: Jav Rendei on 24/07/2004 14:30:49 LOL, a pirate crying cos his lil' battleship got all blowed up by sentries
You know, about year ago, the cops weren't like these unrealistic insta-gank uber ships we have today... and I don't think sentries were either. Wrong-doers actually had a chance to escape!
But as always, "pirates", griefers (call 'em what you will), enjoyed popping 1 week old noobs in starter systems..... until CCP stepped in and boosted sentries and Concord up to what we have today - unrealistic insta-ganking entities.
You reap what you sow.... YARRR!
EDIT: And I agree with Omega Man... Mods please change this thread title to "Eve's dumbest criminal."

Jav Rendei is about right of course.
gone are the days when pirates could gank just about anything in safe space by keeping out of sentry guns range.
Once it was discovered it was possible then basically it was a gankfest as everything was destroyed until CCP HAD to do something about it.
then of course it was lag inducing JIP ganking which had to be sorted coz the game was becoming unplayable.
Recently it has been all about tanking the sentry guns, well have a go at tanking these new guns guys.
Unfortunately once so many people try a tactic it becomes impossible to do much against it and when the destruction of peoples ships does cause problems the tactic has to be stopped.
the game balance will always favour the law-abiding members of the society.
if pirating as a profession did not have quite so many "griefers" it would be a better profession.
Trevedian in a previous post bragging about how he ganged a n00b expressly to blow him up.
That is not really the action of a pirate and just gives pirating a bad name (and will also make it more difficult in future for pirates to ply their trade.)

Originally by: Trevedian Well the sentry guns attacked me in a system where I had done nothing wrong...
Ok so your a pirate yeah?
You attack innocents in a system then use an insta to jump through the gate... however NOW sentry guns will shoot people who are criminally flagged, that is YOU.
So isnt it logical the sentries should remember you are STILL a criminal when you jump into another system?
-I would say come out to 0.0, but you've already tried it and tbh you didnt do very well did you?

Sheeeze! Pirates get no luv on these forums! I'm quite surprised that no one agrees that this is a stupid change.
But irregardless of what the ignorant masses think, I still think its lame

I think it makes sense, sorry
If players can freely shoot you when you've switched systems, so should sentries
Sorry you had to lose your ship, though :(

oh dear Trevedian, everyone is wrong but you once more.
Wonder if this is telling you something, perhaps being one of the "enlightened few" is not so good.
I prefer to be one of the ignorant masses and having read the sentry gun rules understood i'd be wtfpwnd using an instajump through a gate after initiating aggression and being criminally flagged.
At least it gives something for your mighty brain to think on as you travel home in your pod. The rest of us will just stay the right side of our BS hulls, ignorant and warm.

Why are you afraid to post w/ ur main character Omega Man? You just flame, flame, flame anonymously...
Omega Man has been in a newb corp for 8 months 13 days and his bio reads "Harmless alt, looking for some flying hours, Just enough skill to fly a pod, and i fly a lot of them".
No wonder he doesn't like pie ratz...
