ThatÆs right folks, after what is coming up to nearly four years I am leaving Eve. Straight off the bat I have to say ôEve, itÆs not you, itÆs me.ö A close second is ôNo, you canÆt have my stuff.ö
I still think Eve is a great game but I have done all I dreamed of doing here and more. I have made good friends, some I now hang out with IRL. In short itÆs been a hell of a ride. This is not a sudden decision, Thrace Inc left the UshraÆKhan to see if Faction Warfare would reignite the spark. It didnÆt. Since I am pre-paid until March I decided just to have a break and see if things changed. I still have no urge to log in.
I tried rolling a new character and doing something different (hauling / trade û something I have barely touched in over two years), that lasted for almost a week. ItÆs time to climb out of the pod.
When I first considered this post about three months ago I vowed not to go into my reasons. I didnÆt want to sound like I was whinging. But since then I have had many private conversations with other RPers and discovered IÆm not alone. The mechanics of Eve have never greatly concerned me. Nerfs come and go and I just accept things work the way they do. To be honest for a very long time I have found better PvP in other games. I played Eve as long as I did because I immersed myself in it as an RPer. Telemicus Thrace is not just a toon, he is a character and one that has grown into his environment. I never planned for him to end up leading gangs of Matari freedom fighters on lightning raids all over 0.0, itÆs just how his story went. And it was fun!
The best times for me were around the time we lived in Providence. Not so much because of the outpost, it felt great to have helped build it and it was fun living out there but the maintenance was a bloody grind for me. At the time though Karishal Muritor and the Defiants rose up, Telemicus betrayed the Republic and joined the UshraÆKhan. The drama and interaction with the GMs was unreal. I flew in Defiant sorties, we destroyed a battle platform. We inspired a youth movement on Matar. There was the ôOne ISK for Midularö poster. I never felt more immersed in an online game world than I did in those times.
What was Telemicus Thrace pushing for? Much the same as other members of the UshraÆKhan (I wonÆt say all as we were a diverse mob ). Midular the appeaser to step down. Power to be given to Shakor. The reunification of the tribes. Open warfare against the Amarr. Telemicus even had a small side quest going where he was searching for the lost Starkmanir (the prime fiction had a few hints dotted around that they were not really extinct).
In truth I never thought we would get it all. War, yes. After all our campaign in the Bleak Lands with the Defiants against the Saracens was a prototype of faction warfare.
But then Empyrean Age landed. I enjoyed the book. I was however a bit gutted that our world changed during downtime where we, the players, could play no part. In the aftermath I was left thinking, what now?
Telemicus Thrace got all he had been fighting for in one big downtime. Sadly it seemed to be the start of a trend, no more interactive events, just a downtime, a video and some backslapping on the forums.
I was left feeling disconnected. Telemicus belonged on the frontline fighting the Amarr but was forced to choose between guerilla action with the UshraÆKhan or fly as a soldier of the Shakor Republic. It made no sense to me and the required suspension of disbelief was too great. In that moment the magic was gone.
This is of course a personal experience. I am sure there is a new generation of RPers in Eve that feel nothing like I do and for them I am sure they are loving it as much as I have. ItÆs just time for me to do other things and it is time for Telemicus Thrace to step quietly into the shadows. His war is over, perhaps not forever, I may come back a few years from now but I somehow doubt it. ...

So, what next for me? Well aside from taking a break to enjoy Fallout 3 and Mass Effect I have gotten back into Guild Wars proper and loving it. There are a couple of us looking for a new Guild as I just donÆt have the time or energy to continue leading a clan of any description (new job, longer commute, family getting older and needing more attention etc). In 2009-2010 I am looking forward to Jumpgate Evolution and Guild Wars 2 so perhaps IÆll see some of you around the traps.
I will check my Evemail on and off for the next few weeks. If you want to stay in contact drop me a line. Of course there is always the UshraÆKhan forum where I made this announcement some time ago, you can also PM me there as I will continue to lurk. After all it was Karn that got me and the lads to sign up for Eve all those years ago. I still remember that Cardamine run from Malta to New York on the æNode Freelancer server.
So, have fun and farewell. Special thanks to the Star Fraction who told me how to sneak into Pure Blind on my first 0.0 foray, ISS for building something truly amazing, Electus Matari for always being able to hold up an argument and above all my Brothers and Sisters in the UshraÆKhan.
Quote: I have seen things you people wouldnÆt believe. Attacked ships on fire off the moons of 9UY, seen C-Beams glitter in the dark near the Sendaya gate. All these moments will be lost in time. Like tears in rain. Time to die.
Fly Free.

I have to say it is sad that CCP has turned into a castrated and beat dog when it comes to interacting with the players. They don't seem to be willing to accept the small risk that comes with interacting with us (especially the in-game events, etc).
Game mechanics can only make up for so much. Hopefully something in the next couple expansions will draw you back and keep the others as well. -- What's your EVE New Year's Resolution for 2009? |

CCP say they are making inroads into returning to a story that can be interacted with (hopefully without the conclusion rigging). I hold hope in them doing so. But I can totally understand your frustration while this potential continues to be unrealized.

I feel your pain, Telemicus. I've only been playing a year, and I've already been quite disillusioned by the lack of in-game events. I'm told that various problems occurred the last time events were run and that CCP wishes to avoid them recurring. Meh.
In the meantime I'll look for enjoyment where I can - I'm only a young player and still learning the universe.
Good luck, fare well!

I hate to see things like this happen, its one thing when someone rage quits and we all lol, but this is just sad, to see someone have their game really altered enough to ruin everything they worked towards? Its sad to see that happen.
I wish you the best of luck in whatever future paths you may tread Thrace. Follow your Guiding Star. __________________________________________________ I was Amarr before they were the FOTM and I'll be Amarr after it! I'm also training Minmatar Capitals! And I eat Lions! |

Thanks for the responses, all of them (what would an Eve thread be without a couple of troll posts ).
A funny thing did stick out:
"to see someone have their game really altered enough to ruin everything they worked towards?"
That is the crazy part. Everything my character was working towards... he got. All in one bit parcel. It reinforces the whole thing about the journey being the most important part.
Like I say, I might be back one day but not soon. In reality I went inactive in Eve quite some time ago. Since then I have been have masses of fun playing Guild Wars with some mates. I am playing in a Pen'n'Paper RP campaign every second Friday (Tri-Stat cyberpunk). All the games I play now I seem to just sit down and actually play, Eve seems to have a lot more dead time sitting, waiting or travelling. It's something I don't have the time for. Granted that is how the mechanics of Eve work. It was the immersion that gave it enough of an epic feel to keep playing.
My immersion got broken, it doesn't feel epic to me anymore and sadly I don't have the desire to force myself back under. I could if I really wanted to but the 'want' part is missing.

I recently updated my sub interval to one year.
I'm an Amarr RP'er. For most of FW we had our asses handed to us. I think this sort of challenge, and the fact that I've always been outnumbered, but never outgunned, has made EVE what it is for me personally. I enjoy fighting against insane odds and coming out on top.
Once the march expansion comes out, I will enjoy the new exploration mechanics. After that once Ambulation comes out, I'll be in the station having a beer, or in my Corp office doing Directorship things.
Don't quit. Or atleast, be ready to come back in March.
It's also worth noting that I do play games on the side such as Sins of a Solar Empire, Farcry 2, Counterstrike Source, and Bioshock. It helps to keep from getting burnt out in EVE.

Sad to see you go Telemicus, was always a goal of mine to persuade Thrace Inc. back to EM one of these days :(.
Well, all I can say is enjoy your break and I hope you get to find the epicness you search for... until then, I guess it's back to giving Elsebeth a headache.

I for onw will definitly miss seeing you out and about Thrace. From back in the beginings here in EM, to your days as a traitorus s****with U'K :p
I understand and sympathize with your plight, I have spent more time off in the last year than playing, and while a great deal of that is from RL issues, there have been a level of disillusionment from me with CCP as well.
Take care of yourself, and do look in on things from time to time, maybe CCP will bring back some of the fun interaction that used to be around.
Take care, fly safe!
