The current "benchmark system" we are using to determine minimum acceptable performance is a late 2006 iMac 2.0 GHz Core 2 Dup with an X1600 128Mb graphics card running the game at 1280x800.
Do you mean that's the benchmark system for premium or both premium and classic? I just happen to have a late 2006 imac with 256mb X1600, so this info would be rather interesting for me. Even more so, because i'm running the classic now in 1680x1050 and it's "good enough" for me (even though it's not a marvellous performance).
That is the benchmark system for Premium. The Premium engine is actually quite a bit more efficient than the Classic engine, especially following some of the optimisations which came out of the work of getting it to play well with Cider.
So, are you saying that the premium gives you better FPS then classic? Or just that the Premium client it better optimized? In that case i hope you include the "Disable Premium Graphics" button for us who won't be able to run premium, but would like more FPS.
Ohh btw: awesome news CCP, hope it is as good as the current windows premium

The Premium Mac client should give you more fps than the current Classic client and also be a lot more stable.

I don't want to get my hope up to high... yet having the (correct me if I'm wrong) producer of the Mac/Linux EVE client back in the Mac channel is certainly heart warming .
One question if you have time: how about our Linux brothers & sisters, will they also benefit from this?

We're hoping that most of your questions will be answered with the Public beta. I would strongly suggest that people wait until they have the public beta on their machines before trying to predict performance on their system, especially those who are willing to bring their frying pans to iceland.

Hey, I'm cool. If you promise performance, I expect performance. If a 2008 Mac Pro with an 8800GT can get playable performance (>40fps) when staring at a POS, I'll make sure you get a beer at the next fanfest. If it doesn't, you get the frying pan.
I'm still a bit miffed that you guys did this at MacWorld though. I think everyone here would have appreciated it if you could have at least posted something in this forum at the same time with the guts of the announcement, rather than us having to send a gopher to you at MacWorld. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

that sounds so logical to me... especially if cider isn't multicores yet.
one core for calculating, one gpu for decoding the video stuff (and even more, dedicated memory etc... admit guys that eve's graphics on mac is a real issue when we are in multi-objects space, dropping fps, bad rendered, glitchs...) i just pray ccp will implant a option to limit my fps... too much un-needed fps is a graphic card killing game, especialy if it's highly gpu stressing... like a premium version. keep in mind that we can't change fan speed on gpu on mac... good job anyway

Ok, when is the Beta going to air? Or has it already done so and I have just missed it?? Also, will the beta be TQ compatible, or just SiSi, because by the look of it it would be only client-side fixes. |

Hehe, you guys sure are playing it cool though :)
Thanks for giving us a lot more information. At the very least, I appreciate it a great deal when I come back here and see a wealth of info. So...I'll just wait for the "4 soons" of soon ;)
I wish that soon meant like...today though

I'm quite inebriated and have not searched far through recent posts in the Mac and Linux forum subsections, but will this public beta be extended to Linux users?
BTW, your Linux/Mac support is scandalous.

Yeah, one thing just struck me... Will the beta be Tiger compatible, because alot of new games only runs on Leopard. |

The premium client runs smooth as silk for me when playing on XP through bootcamp on an X1600 w/256MB, so I hope it'll be just as silky smooth under OSX!

So... when Whisper says more fps and improved stability compared to classic, do you think we could have that in terms of raw percent increases (i.e. percent increase from premium to classic when in space and in station, while using the same ship)?
There's really no point in asking other than because I'm excited.

I just hope it runs on tiger... they never did say at which OS it would run on, but they did say that late 2006 machines, so those were tigers. |

Well upgrading isn't the problem, but I would hate buying Leopard when Snow Leopard is just around the corner. I do have Leopard on my laptop, but I've been waiting for snow leopard for my desktop machine (and no, my laptop is a Air, so no "real" playing on it can be done). |

I know I asked this before, but we never did get a reply. Will the next client make the current "eyes bleed from pain" performance on "not so much supported" laptops better (aka the 1st gen Macbook Air and earlier macbooks)? Couldn't care less to use premium on them, but running a playable classic would be nice, so i could still pewpew while on trips :) |

Soon 1 aobsolete : at once : immediately b: without undue time lapse : before long <soon after sunrise> 2: in a prompt manner : speedily <as soon as possible> <the sooner the better> <no sooner said than done> 3archaic : before the usual time 4: in agreement with one's choice or preference : willingly <I'd just as soon walk as drive>
So...I'm hoping he means 3. I hope he doesn't mean 4.
