All four systems in CCP's booth are Macs running the premium client around 45-60 fps (extreme shadow quality, but no HDR). They did a bit of station orbiting, warping around, light PVP, etc. I saw two minor graphical glitches over the course of an hour or so (and I do mean minor - nothing like what people complain about here), but it looked pretty smooth and solid to me. The systems are Mac Pro towers with a single 8800GT card running a 30" cinema display at native resolution (2560x1600). When I asked about running it on a MacBook Pro, they said it was around 35 fps last November, but should be faster now.
The clients are all connected to a private test server, but CCP hopes to get a beta out by the end of the month, with a final release around March.

I wonder what performance they will see with HDR. I also hope that:
+ They will have an option to span multiple screens with one client. + Multiple instance will easily cohabitate. + The beta will be usable on Tranquility. + They'll utilize multiple cores. + They'll utilize multiple cards. + CCP will actually talk to US. You know, the actually existing OSX community in EVE. -- What's your EVE New Year's Resolution for 2009? |

Considering the risks they are taking on the PR... I look forward to the strong possibility of the majority of you people eating your words.

Course I could end up eating my words as well... but I'd say the odds are in my favor this time. =============== CEO of Clan Shadow Cadre www.shadowcadre.com =============== |

Edited by: Verite Rendition on 08/01/2009 16:49:21 I'd still like to see them park the client at a POS and then see how many frames they get. The client is CPU limited, not GPU limited - shadows and high resolutions aren't what make the client grind to a halt right now.
And of course, it would be nice if they told us this stuff instead of letting us find out 2nd-hand from people at Macworld... |

Ok so now they announced that EvE premium for mac will come at the release of the 10th expansion on march 10'th, but they say it's gonna be able in retail box, so what i don't get is, do we mac users have to pay for a retail box to get the premium, and if so, why do we have to pay when the windows users got it for free? Please tell me how to understand it, if we can DL the mac premium or if it will only be included in the retail boxes

You will be able to download premium for mac on March 10th. You do not need to buy anything, unless you want to. I will certainly buy it, I like boxes.

Totally. Presuming Sun does not lay my ass off by March 10th and assuming that you guys will distribute it through Amazon, I will be buying a box. Maybe two.

Well in order for Cider to run it, I'm assuming that the Macs they used were some jacked up liquid-nitrogen-cooled Mac Pro's using hacked nVidia cards with an OC on those too.
That...and it was probably set at 640x480 to get 50-60 fps. |

I would like to know if this will run on anything other than a "supernew mac". Can we "old" intel machines even consider running it? How about light laptops (macbook, air) surely it won't run, but will classic be more efficient? |

The current "benchmark system" we are using to determine minimum acceptable performance is a late 2006 iMac 2.0 GHz Core 2 Dup with an X1600 128Mb graphics card running the game at 1280x800. One of the things we are in the process of compiling, and which we will be asking for community input on during the beta, is a table of all Mac hardware with suggested settings for optimal performance. While I can't guarantee that you will get high framerates on the X1600 chipset, the game should be playable. Our core graphics team is also working on more client refinements that will allow you to tailor the graphics and effects quality. This is part of the work for Apocrypha, so you should be able to tweak client settings more effectively to get the balance of quality and performance that is right for you.

Do you mean that's the benchmark system for premium or both premium and classic? I just happen to have a late 2006 imac with 256mb X1600, so this info would be rather interesting for me. Even more so, because i'm running the classic now in 1680x1050 and it's "good enough" for me (even though it's not a marvellous performance). |

That is the benchmark system for Premium. The Premium engine is actually quite a bit more efficient than the Classic engine, especially following some of the optimisations which came out of the work of getting it to play well with Cider. |
