I was actually about to post about this after reading this. Windows is dead. Long live Windows!
A quote from the article:
Quote: Instead of it being an operating system mainly associated with a PC, he said, Windows was becoming a "connected platform and experience".

less of a resource hog? from your/their mouth to god's ears
that whole "connected platform and experience" is all you need to hear to shred your hopes.
i dont want an experience.
i don't want windows to give me a handjob while automatically finding and downloading things that 'may' interest me and proceeding to make it easier to add my freezer to my local area network JUST IN CASE i may want to listen to songs i ported from my ipod while i make icecubes and try to figure out what item in the refrigerator is making that ungodly smell.
i don't want windows to run and constantly download updates for 15 different embedded pieces of software i never asked for to begin with. i don't want windows to upload consumer info on me to god knows who so that pop up ads have a 5% better chance of interesting me. i don't want windows pretend to 'enhance' my daily computing needs with one turn and the next turn detecting/crippling/possibly reporting data on my PC it may think shouldn't be there.
i don't want windows so busy doing all of the above it can't keep my important data secure. i don't want windows developers so interested in all of the above when i finally [strike]steal[/steal] obtain the OS and load it on my pc, it barely runs due to the glaring bugs in basic operation that should have been attended to first. (see also rant about security)
i will not run in in my house i will not run it with my mouse i will not run it here or there i will not run it anywhere i do not like windows vista or 7 i do not like it sam-i-(something that rhymes with 7)
we want a compact, secure and stable os.
steve balmer wants THIS

How the words of the ignorant echo throughout forums.
You want to whine about resource hogging? Whine about how much resources Windows 95 required compared to DOS. Please whine about the 4MB+ memory compared to the 56K of DOS. Yes, you know nothing about the evolution of hard-/software in the past decade or have the memory of a fish.
I can't wait for Windows 7 and if you don't want to use Windows switch to Mac OS and pray that $teve iFail allows you to use copy and paste on your iPhail or old technology (the recent update of the onboard chipsets of Apple PC'$). It was hillarious reading people hailing $teve Fool as the next coming when he finally allowed his brainwashed following to use 500GB external HD's years after their release. |

Whatever it is that I am smoking I don't fail nearly as hard as you, concidering Linux is not an OS I could use but you don't care about my PC usage, you just come here to spam ignorance.
Next time you want to whine make it look credible at least.

Windows 7 video
TBH, its all eye candy but not extra functionality compared to all that I can currently do with XP (except the drag and pin to TaskBar).
I also do NOT need this shared user 'experience' being offered by W7, I do NOT need to have the Windows Live 'experience' (cant stand msn and all that, its too risky with security) and I do NOT need Windows to control MY actions on MY P.C. I do NOT need W7 to tell ME what I can or cannot do with MY files and whom I share them with or the sites I visit or give me advertisements that I will NOT be interested in. I dont watch commerical TV (gawd bless the bbc and all who sail in her) so what makes them think I would want a commerical internet 'experience'? What I WANT is a secure, functional computer that does what I want it to do when I tell it to do it. Is that too much to ask? (yeah I know, linux ftw)

I'm still trying to get over the fact, that XP has "common folder actions" or whatever it's called, and one of those actions for image folders is "buy prints online". Seriously, WTF, that's not the job of my friggin OS.

Windows 7 is a as much a breath of fresh air, as it is imaginative in name.
Windows 7 is a knee-jerk reaction to the high amount of negative press Vista got. In fact Windows Vista is version 6, and Windows 7 is version 6.1. They would call it Windows Vista SE (ala 98SE) but would inherit the negative Vista name.
At most Windows 7 will be an optimised Vista, with yet again more eyecandy even if some of it is actually useful this time.
And yes I have tried the beta.

No spare harddisks floating around or I'd poke about with the beta a bit. Am following the news on it though. So far I am not really convinced of what more it will offer compared to vista other than more eye candy and new versions of existing technologies. Vista to 7 feels a tad like windows 95 to windows 98. 98 to XP was a world of difference and was the first OS upgrade I did immediately rather than wait till purchasing a new PC. While XP lasted long enough until a new gaming PC meant I had to get Vista I am not really impressed with the "upgrade".

They can pry my WinXP out of my fingers the same way they pried away my W95 (well, W98SE, but that wasn't a big step from W95 anyway) some time in the autumn/winter of 2004 (some time after XPSP2 came out and XP became stable enough for my taste, and W95-blah was getting way too old already).
P.S. That probably means I'm waiting for (at least) Windows7 SP1 (late 2009 / mid 2010) before I'll give it a try

I heard windows 7 won't have a start menu or taskbar. Will you have to use explorer to launch exe files? |

Well ... Honestly, I'm still using WinXP, but on a dual boot (thanx to GRUB) WIn XP / Ubuntu 8.10 . I only use WinXP to play EQ2,BF2 and atm FOTM Red Alert 3 (I hate EA btw, but got RA3 as Xmas Gift) , rest of the time I use Ubuntu.
I'm still amazed at the amount of people that will use the crap that is Vista saying Linux distros don't work with X or Y program, considering that unless u have a very obscure hobby/job requiring a very obscure software chances are you can get a program that does the same for free on Linux, and if you want to game you can use Wine/Cedega to run almost all of the new FoTM games ... after a couple days I was able to run EVE Premium/EQ2 on my Ubuntu setup ... and slowly migrating to Linux most of my activities.
I Can't reccomend enough WUBI to people that wanna try Ubuntu ...
W7 is like someone earlier mentioned it, Vista with a new package and more crap loaded on it.
And in my short experience as small store CS tech, if you placed all new assembled puters pre-loaded with ubuntu and told people that the OS name is Vista 90% of them wouldn't even notice. I usually delete all IE shortcuts on people's puters and replace it with a shortcut to Mozilla Firefox using the IE Icon , been doing it since 2005 and still havent seen anyone over 30+ noticing it wasnt IE.
Anyway, back to OP's question, not yet, not really interested, honestly the world would be better without Microcrap and it's silly dancing screaming oversized gnomesthat go hysterical due to the amount of cash people give them so they can keep screaming and dancing |

I guess you guys all know the story about Bill Gates finding that old bottle on the shore of lake redmont, and as he picks it up, there is this djinn coming out, granting him a wish?
Anyways, Billy boy drags out a map that has all the current warzones marked. He shows the map to the djinn and asks for world peace. The djinn takes a look and says
"I don't know... religious nutjobs, extremists, moneygrubbing, greedy bastards everywhere. It's impossible to get those people to tolerate each other, even for a djinn as old and powerful as myself. Don't you have anything else to wish for?"
Bill scratches his head, ponders for a moment and says "Could you help me finally release a bugfree and useful operating system?"
"Show me the map again."
