Eve and CCP have some very good things going for them. First of all, there have been plateaus, but no real declines in activity on the server since release. The architecture of the game, as mentioned above, seems to allow a lot of flexibility for added content (though changing mechanics that prove burdensome seems to be a problem). While they are making a new MMO, they are incorporating its features into Eve (a move some like, some hate) so they aren't letting it wither on the vine. They developed the property themselves, also mentioned above, which seems to also be a predictor for success in games.
Two things that haven't been pointed out yet though: Although there is a backstory and a setting and they seemed to deepen it a lot and make it come alive with Faction Warfare, the game is mostly driven by hot player on player action. As long as there are power blocs out there, as long as alliances still make war on one another and mercs hire themselves out to pick on industrial corporations and pirates continue to camp lowsec systems and missions can be busted and looted by thieves, Eve will remain at least as engrossing as any game out there for many of the long time players. Why? The politics. The rush of adrenaline. I still feel it, when I create a new account and go hopping into combat in a frigate or a destroyer.
The other major advantage that CCP has is that it is privately owned. It is not beholden to institutional shareholders that will sue them if they defer higher profitability for long term stability. Yes, they have to make money, the owners are going to continue to want income and so will the employees. But they don't have to pull stupid stunts to stave off shareholder lawsuits or avoid hostile takeovers from other companies wanting to shut down the competition.
I realize that in the end, Eve will fade despite the trailer, but so long as CCP keeps the focus on player conflict and competition and keep their independence, I don't see it happening. I'm discounting the economy; they might have to downsize temporarily or put their new game on hold for a year as the economy recovers enough to justify it, but I doubt it would end Eve. I seriously doubt talk of a depression is justified; it will be painful for a bit, yes, but there are still cornerstones of our economy growing. They just aren't being talked about on Wall Street, since they aren't built on public stock ownership and don't rely on credit markets. |

The EVE gate will reopen in 2012. We will all venture into New Eden in pink thongs, singing "The old grey mare, she ain't what she used to be" |

Depends, if EVE is female, it's resiliance and stamina will be directly measured via the emotional ties and interests.
If it's male, about 2 minutes. |
