Remebmer... this isn't an "Eve is dying" thread... in my opinion it is going very strong. However, nothing lasts forever, and horrifying though it may seem to us now, there will eventually come a time when Eve is no more.
The question is... how long has it got? |

I personally think this game has more potential staying power than most. For many MMOs, the game is tied very closely to the graphical engine; a few years from launch, most games start to look dated.
Eve, however, has the most fantastically concieved architecture:
The gameplay is essentially similar to pen-and-paper style RPGs, with a loosely linked GUI plonked onto the top. You could easily have a client for Eve that runs on a very basic PC, with no graphics at all, and lots of ugly tables, but you'd get the same gameplay. As premium graphics has demonstrated, you can also have a much more sophisticated client.
And the new UI is also on its way. Yay!
There is modularity of the connected solar systems and the market
Even from a gameplay perspective there are lots of brilliant generalised systems, such as standings, roles & titles, contracts, etc.
With this sort of setup, its is very easy to just keep building more and more features and content on top, without ever having to worry that something might not date well. If something doesn't, its relatively easy to lift it out and replace it with a better system, seamlessly integrated.
So how long does Eve have left? I say we're pretty much good, until someone actually invents warp drives. Then it won't be quite so cool any more. |

Given the sandbox nature of Eve I'll hazard a guess that it could last as long as 10 to 20 years if they keep up with the technology updates. I've been playing for 4 years and still find new stuff to do. |

While everybody loves to think nothing can possibly end eve, there's a few things that can go wrong. At the end of the day, eve lasts as long as it's making ccp profit. Over the next few years, there's a few things that can go wrong.
- WoD may take more resources than CCP originally thought. Also, it could bomb, and a failed mmorpg has ruined more than one company before. - Blizzard/Vivendi could get aggressive and start acquiring competing companies - The global recession could worsen, which would seriously damage any luxury good provider, eg mmorpg makers

EVE will last as long as there are people willing to play it. As long as the graphics continue to be refreshed and improved, the world enriched and the game mechanics expanded, there is no reason to expect that it would ever go away. They don't need millions of players. They just need a few hundred thousand. As long as the game continues to remain on the cutting edge (or even just current), there will easily be enough people that always want to join the universe. -- What's your EVE New Year's Resolution for 2009? |

Eve will last until someone else successfully copies what eve is doing, or man goes extinct.
I have one of the shortest gaming attention spans, and Ive been in eve and will continue to be in eve, until I stop breathing or it shuts down. |

As long as CCP continues to support EVE with free expansions and additional content and continues to advertise via banner add spam, eve will stay healthy and probably continue to grow rather than decline. ___________________ Yes I'm bitter. (the taste you can see!)

I believe they had recently stated somewhere that the roadmaps they have in place carry EVE through 2011 and that the ideas they are dreaming up and discussing amongst the internal brain-trust today would largely be getting in line behind the rest, meaning 2012 or later. Meaning that even if they couldn't think of anything new every again, they would continue adding to EVE for at least 36 months from now. And there's no reason it wouldn't last at that point with very little added content beyond it - as long as they occasionally gave some graphical updates to keep the game from "aging".
EVE is a game I have no worries about still being able to play in a decade. -- What's your EVE New Year's Resolution for 2009? |

EVE will last until the next hot, really good pvp-focused MMORPG comes out. It seems that most new MMORPGs are created by fail so EVE may seem to be invincible but it is not. --

Eve is almost 6 years old at this point.
The one thing that helped EVE a lot was the absolutely horrible job that SOE did with SWG.
Tabula Rosa also fell pretty flat.
Thus it has no real competition in the sci fi genre. STO supposedly will release sometime in 2010. It has the potential to hurt EVE however I've noticed a trend with IPs not owned by the companies working on them for MMOs, they almost all invariably fail. The reason they fail is they simply cannot live up to the expectations of fans.
The greatest threat to EVE is the current global recession which will likely become a depression. I know players who have been lost already because they could no longer afford to play EVE. They love the game, they just simply do not have the means to play. Some would point out that they could buy the play time with ISK, but the cost of those has gone up tremendously to the point someone who isn't playing EVE full time can't afford them.
We'll know in early to mid March how bad it could be for EVE. Over the last year they've shown snippets of EVE on Sci Fi and other stations with advertisements, kinda teasers really leading up to the past expansions. These teasers may actually help sell the boxes. If sales are below their expectations in March it could be a sign that the global recession is impacting the game unduly.
One thing that might be appealing to consumers is the free expansions of EVE. This could be a major marketing point in the recession economy since the common model is to charge for each expansion. By them being free the consumer will save money in the long term while assured that they will have new content twice a year.
If it can survive the recession in a strong position it could probably continue for another decade.
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts.

At a guess... 15 years to go... or so.
The thing about MMORPG's, is even when a competing product comes out, that can definitavely outperform it's predecessor in several ways, people very often have a loyalty to a particular game based upon the social relations they've built up there.
There is still no competing MMORPG on the market for Eve... a few in the pipes, but I'll believe it when I see it.
However, unlike other MMO's Eve is updating itself in ways that others either don't have the vision to do so, or lack the ability or will to expend the funds needed to progress themselves forward.
CCP creates a premium client, and continues to upgrade it. Games often initially attract new players based upon visual appeal. Eve has that in spades. Work apparently continues upon a DX 10 client (thought probably with a rather small team until MS gets it's ass in gear, and there is a greater level of adoption of Vista and more companies are induced into investing towards DX 10, which is currently kinda like vaporware).
Point being, continually upgraded visuals appeal to new players. Add in the continual upgrade of content plus mechanics, and a far ranging vision of what CCP want to further add to Eve in the future means that old ass players like myself tend to stay for the ride. Friends and grudges included, it makes for a good sauce of renewal.
So, Eve will shut down in 15 years or so, basically when CCP scrap the old architecture and go with a fresh engine with ported content in Eve 2. CCP, I fully expect to have the same character reserved for me.
Apologies for the tl;dr post, but this beer is ****ing great.

Eve will last until CCP's owners sell the company or product I reckon. If there is private equity involved this may not be entirely under CCP's control.

Edited by: Cyprus Black on 09/01/2009 05:42:32 When it ceases to be profitable. Probably not the answer you were looking for, but it's the obvious answer. I highly doubt an MMO game company will ever say:
"Well, we've been in operation for ten years and have hundreds of thousands of customers giving us money. I think it's time to wrap things up and call it quits."
I have high hopes for a few other MMOs on the horizon, but it's still some time away. SG:W looks like it's in financial trouble, and it may not be for a few more years before I ever see STO. I'll mess around with Sony Freerealms, but won't play it to the exclusion of EvE. ______________ Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn. |
