Right now I'm flying a Raven and just started lvl 4's so there's no way I want to pvp in it, so what's a cheap, but still decent ship as a caldari pilot to start pvp in? I'd prefer not to fly anything more expensive than a cruiser. So what are my choices? Are krestrel's decent for noobie pvp, or should I fly something else?

Really does depend on what's cheap to you, insurance coverage, price to fit it to make it decent enough.
assuming u have the typical wtf pwnage shield and missile skilsl most lvl 4 raven runners have, theres only really 1 choice to fit ur current skill set in cruisers, The Caracal.
Caracal pvp setup thread
The kestrel can be a pretty hard hitter, and run a decent tank, but i just dnt think it would do so well in frig vs frig pvp, let alone in gang etc.
hope the caracal thread helps u out on making a choice , best of luck o7

Frigates. Look around on BattleClinic for Caldari, Min, and Gallente Frig PvP fits. Frigs that I would suggest looking at specifically would be: Caldari: Merlin Min: Rifter Gal: Incursus Amarr: I know very little about these ships :S
Kessies will pop before you know what happened from what I hear. The missiles that they use (and missiles in general) are not typically what you want to use for PvP.
And I suggest those ships because: Merlin you should have the skills for. Rifter because Min Frig 3 might take half a day to get, and then you need pretty much just small proj turret Incursus because you should have hybrid skills, and again, half day to get to use.
Some builds that I grabbed: Rifter 1 Rifter 2 Merlin Incursus

Edited by: Psir on 09/01/2009 06:39:12 T1 fitted fully insured HAM drake, it's the only decent cheap ship that Caldari pilots can fly. Don't bother with the Caracal, it costs as much to loose with t2 modules, does less damage and has much less EHP.
The Harpy is a very nice ship to step up to once you're feeling comfortable in PvP, a t2 fitted HAM drake can be very deadly aswell.
EDIT: Well, the BB is okay at what it does aswell. Go with the Drake as it can solo aswell.

nobody mentioned the crow yet... costs two cruisers and isnt insurable, but I guess it takes the least player skill of all the inties, and they are still hard to catch if you decide to run.

Kestrel and merlin can be great fun in faction warfare if you're caldari. Start cheap, keep the cost down to less than a mil or so per ship and always insure them.
I found that one important step to take from the 'PVE mindset' to the 'PVP mindset' is to stop being so attached to one ship. Once you can do that, you can PVP with confidence and without real 'fear' for the loss you will eventually incur.

Caracal is a paperwieght. Nearly useless in every way.
The only thing its good for is in larger gangs, as it can do max damage from 50km+
Caldari cruisers arent great. The moa lacks midslots so you cant really fit both a tank and tackle (which is what you need for pvp). Ive tried a blaster moa and it was weak. Only things i killed was those stupid enough to wonder within 5km.
The blackbird is awesome for gangs however. Fly it and your gang mates will love you.
If i were you id crosstrain to another race for the cruisers. Thorax and Rupture come to mind. I went with the rupture :P
If you want to go really cheap, then you should go frigates. And caldari have the BEST frigates in existence.
Firstly theres the griffen, awesome for gangs, capable of taking a ship many times its size out of the fight.
Then theres the merlin. Which when fitted right can tank any other frigate for a age and dish out 100+ dps. Setup i use has 7k EHP and 91 dps (without overloading) its just a beast. Only thing that can beat it is a rifter with nuets and even then its a close call.

Merlins are a nice starting point for your PVP career. Cheap, insurable, and capable tacklers. Plus I think they look pretty cool. Kestrels used to be pretty good but the missile changes has screwed rocket launchers and SMLs.
You never said if you are going solo or if your flying with some friends. Caldari are good in gangs but not so great solo. Being shield tankers means that they don't have the mid slots they need to fit tackle gear without gimping their tank.
You could try a Caracal but you won't be able to fight at your preferred range if you have to tackle for yourself. The Moa isn't really much better but you should be able to get some fights because people will underestimate you. Pickings are slim for Caldari cruisers unless you want to fly the Blackbird.
My advice, start in some Merlins and Kestrels and see what you like best. Buy a bunch of em, load em up, and go out and attack people. Keep it cheap until you have a handle on PVP, then feel free to move up to better ships.
I would also second the HAM Drake as a nice goal to work towards for PVP. It can dish out some scary DPS and fits a pretty nice buffer tank. Plus people are used to seeing super tanked PVE HML Drakes, so Drakes are pretty low on the primary list, which should help keep you alive.
I wouldn't start in one though, since they are less agile than Frigates and are more susceptible to gate camps and small tacklers who will hold you down until the reinforcements arrive. |

PDU 2x BCU + DCU or 3x BCU Alternatively DCU+3x BCU (requires +3% PG implant)
Drake HML 7xHML Same mids and lows (requires CPU implant, swaps DPS for better range)
Kestrel, disposable frig 4x rocket point + web + watever fits (propulsion mod/another web if u have a gang) MAPC 400mm plate
kestrel lolfit +gang 4x SML medshieldboost capbooster MWD 2x MAPC
Caracal, gang HML MWD Painter Damps (range script) BCU in lows
Caracal, anti frig +gang AML's LSE tank + propulsion mod BCU
Caldari are in general more suited to gangwork, but drake and kestrel work well solo/small gang. Fit all with t1/cheap named and fully insurable so costs can be kept low. Expect to lose them as caracals and kestrels are paper thin. You'll have to figure out what kind of range you want to engage at with the fits above.
Joining FW or a decent corp will help with getting gangmates to fly with, dont expect to be able to solo much against many competent pilots

Ahh, thanks! I think I'm just going to mess around with the Kestrel for a while, I'd honestly rather not spend a week training EW (working on navigation skills right now so I can use MWDs and such). Thanks for the input all.

No one has mentioned the harpy yet. I absolutely love the harpy for PvP. with named blasters in the highs, AB, point, and web in the mids, and lows being 2 t2 Mag Stabs, it does like 250 DPS. |

I think we were trying to stay away from the T2 since this is for him just starting to PvP and going out in T2 ships doesn't work economically since he is very likely to lose the majority of his starting ship. |

Find your self a nice starter Alliance/Corp perhaps organize some friendly empire wars. I would use Cruiser gangs they are very cheap and can do allot of damage if you have a big group of them.
If you join a 0.0 Alliance then i would suggest flying Interceptors The best way to learn PVP in my opinion, you are also performing the most important roles as well. Jumping gates to scout ahead of the main group, Chasing down/de cloaking ships and forcing the falcons to warp out of the field.
After a few months of interceptor work move into a high damage MWD bumping Battle Cruiser and continue up from there if you enjoy the BC then go for the BS if you rather the fast passed intercepter work then consider a Rapier/ inderdictor. |
