I can be almost.. 52.4% sure that most people that play EVE run two or more monitors because they are indeed - the true masters of multitasking.
Dual Monitors is indeed the future, well.. it has been for a while. Being able to divide up material on two seperate zones, but have both zones linked.
Perfect.
There is however - A HUGE DOWNSIDE.
Addiction.
I, unfortunately, have a work PC with one monitor. It's a 17" HP flatscreen.
I generally work with 13 applications open at any one time, due to the really archaic nature of the systems I use, you NEED this many open.
My desktop looks like a bloody Roman mosaic that someones been at with a sledgehammer, theres windows all over the place, my taskbar is doublewide so i can see all my damn buttons...
I NEED another monitor. I need to be able to drag some **** onto one and some other **** onto the other and basically just get some more damned space.
Excel is the worst one. If you don't give that a full window, its a pig to work with, having about 3x3 inch blocks to edit spreadsheets in, is not great.
WHY must the industry standard be "one monitor."
Its not enough. To be efficient you need to be able to see copious amounts of data at once for quick cross-referencing! Case point with EVE - Mineral prices on one, EVE on the other.
Its time to start a dual monitor uprising... the time is now.

I had 2 monitors at my last job. Just had to ask the IT guy. His computer had 5.1 surround sound. Not sure why. |

Edited by: Bish Ounen on 09/01/2009 14:56:11 At my last job I had dual monitors. But not JUST dual monitors, dual TWENTY FOUR INCH monitors running 1600x1200 each. (or thereabouts. I don't remember the resolution precisely)
I had a mid-range Dell laptop attached to them. I could even play EVE, although only in windowed 1024x768 mode. But it WAS nice being able to have a couple of remote desktop sessions in windows along with various admin tools and browser-based apps all going at once. I pretty much never had to leave my office to administer everything.
But, even though I only have one monitor with my current job, I make more money and have less responsibility, so it's much more relaxing. But I do miss those dual 24's. Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!

strictly speaking there shouldn't be anything stopping you from buying your own monitor (it should be tax deductible as well!), just have your details engraved on it PROPERTY OF REVEN CORDELLE, and have you boss write a note somewhere so that if they get replaced the replacement knows about it.

Because monitor costs seem to go up on a logarithmic scale. That is, a monitor that's double the size of a smaller one size will cost 3-4 times as much, not twice as much. It's the ugly truth, and a reason why dual-monitors are still popular.
However, that has been changing in recent years. With luck the global recession will also prompt a price drop in LCDs. That way, if you still have a job you will be able to afford some pretty nice monitors. Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!

We just got a new LCD TV for Christmas (thank you AMEX points) which has freed up the Dell 22" LCD we used with the PS3. So I've put it back on my development/eve machine. Having two screens again is fantastic.. but.. how can I get two mice working at once???? I'm working on trying this but am away for 2 weeks.

I used to work as an IT lab assistant and had a very hard time working with just one monitor. From what my father has told me though its pretty common to have at the very least a dual screen system and he's in the graphic arts industry.
I also wouldnt say that those of us who have access to a dual or multi screen system can multi task but that we simply know how to divide our time better.
I see in 5-10 years dual screens will be the standard for home PC's and we will start to see 3 monitor support on a single card. |

Synergy's not a TRUE second monitor. Synergy is really more of a software KVM switch. Basically let's you use two separate PC's with a single keyboard and mouse without lots of fancy extra wires.
Still a very cool thing though. Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!

when i first used an old 12 inch monitor with my 'big' 14 inch one when i was like 13 i was amazed by dual monitors. it vastly increases how fast you can work/waste time :P
right now i use a 19" CRT (one of those sony trinitron multiscan ones, it's just fantastic quality even though it must be nearing 8 years old now) and a 19" LCD for text-based tasks (writing, forum whoring, etc). all graphics cards have twin ports now so dual monitors is a cheap-as-you-make-it upgrade.
problem with CRT is my beovox cx50 speakers aint magnetically shielded and will bend electron beams from 2 feet away so placement is awkward that and it used to be impossible to use twin 19" (or bigger) CRT on a normal desk without it literally collapsing!

I'd like that last one please. Same size as the Che poster I have currently. Unless there is a picture with a communist similar to that one.
Thanks. |

I love the two monitor approach, but had a fun time setting it up with SLI compatible cards lol.
I wanted each screen to be seperate, ie:not one big screen ( I have seen some screenshots of eve on that setup and did not like ) nor did I want the screens to be clones, and SLI does not like two monitors to be seperate, no it does not like that at all lol.
I finally got it to work the way I wanted, one is my main "gameing screen" while the other is my browsing screen, gameing screen is kept clear of icons and the task bar at the bottom, that is for my browsing screen, and I like the fact that I can still look at the comp clock while playing a game in full screen ( not a big thing but nice all the same lol). But after going dual monitor I will never go back to single monitor, it is just tooo adictive.....as the OP stated lol.

i have 4x 19" monitors at work (not by decision, i have a ******ed VP) i have 1x 24.1 at home.
i can perform all my work tasks at home on my 1 monitor just fine
I hate having my opinion? mo monitors mo problems
i think your better off finding ways to maximize how you are using what you have (see: virtual desktops)
if you NEED 19 things open in front of you, i think this might be a case of PEBKAC? if no then light the torches and demand MORE MONITORS

Actually, Having just recently taken possession of my new 22" iZ3D screen I HAD to go back to one screen from two (This screen needs two DVI inputs for itself).
After having used a dual screen setup for a few years now it is really rather strange going back to just one and it is taking some getting used to, however, I will manage. The pros of this screen outweigh the cons in my opinion. |
