Hey, fairly new to PvP here. I currently have a shield tanked Caracal, but it's absaloutely nothing special, just over 3k shields. I'm looking for a decent PvP ship, preferably Amarr, or if not, Caldari. I'm fully trained for Amarr Battleships/Cruisers and Caldari Battlecruisers.
All I'm wondering is, has anyone got a cheap (Ish, around 250mil for ship and fit) for a noob to PvP. All replies are appreciated!
Thanks

Your best bet is to get a pile of obscenely cheap frigate hulls and just get out there looking for fights. You will lose lots of ships before getting the hang of it, and it's better to have really cheap ships that you're not afraid to just throw into a fight and see what happens.
And for a bit of something to toss out there, here's a very low SP fit I'd tossed together for some people in my corp to try out.
[Merlin, New Setup 2] Damage Control I Micro Auxiliary Power Core I
Experimental 1MN Afterburner I Medium Supplemental Barrier Emitter I Initiated Harmonic Warp Scrambler I 'Langour' Drive Disruptor I
Regulated Light Electron Phase Cannon I, Antimatter Charge S Regulated Light Electron Phase Cannon I, Antimatter Charge S 'Malkuth' Rocket Launcher I, Mjolnir Rocket 'Malkuth' Rocket Launcher I, Mjolnir Rocket
Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Small Core Defense Field Extender I [empty rig slot]

Very much this x1000, also keep in mind always check your clone is updated and eventually use +3 implants in the fields you're training (not mandatory but the sp loss compared to +5's is acceptable) |

Signed. You'll lose a lot of ships trying to learn to pvp. That 250m isk you have is better spent as 25 10m isk ships. |

Look towards RVB You're less likely to be hotdropped by 500 Maelstroms, and can keep your expensive clone. |

The best way to learn PvP is NOT simply to go out alone with frigates and die instantly and repeatedly. I don't know why people keep suggesting this. What would the guy learn? When I started out a long time ago I learned the most by joining a corp and learning from others while patrolling low sec. |

You are wrong. I lost about a dozen Rifters -- solo -- in Amamake before I got my first kill. I learned something every time. You don't die instantly if you put forth five minutes of effort to read up on things.
Read Wensley's Rifter Guide (google it) Leave Fraps on while you roam -- later, go back and watch it to analyze your mistakes. Delete the huge file afterwards.
Take this into nullsec (I recommend Syndicate, starting in TXW) and learn. You will die A LOT, but every time -- if you put effort into it -- you will learn at least one thing. [Rifter, Solo PvP] Small Armor Repairer II F85 Peripheral Damage System I Gyrostabilizer II

I don't agree with this at all. I learned almost nothing about PvP from my first corporation. I learned only a little more in my first large nullsec alliance (although my alliance was pretty terrible, so that may have had something to do with it). When you have friends, it's fun, but you don't face that steep learning curve. You don't learn how to pick your battles and fly your ships.
I learned more about Eve PvP by getting a stack of Rifters, Merlins, Incursus, Kestrels, etc. moving them to a highsec station near a 0.0 entry point and then solo roaming or baiting tacklers off the persistent gate camps in these areas. I learned to use D-Scan effectively. I learned to make tactical bookmarks. I learned what I could engage and what I couldn't.
The most important thing to learn is that it's okay to lose ships! Once you're not afraid to die, you can be a very effective PvPer.
My favored solo rifter fit:

Don't understand ppl saying pick bunch of t1 frigs
I grew up in lowsec and t1 frigs there either die to sentries or cant engage those who belt due to their terrible stats
So my adivce is go for Drake, noone would primary you until other members of the gang are dead. |

You're not going to learn to PvP unless you are out there doing it all the time. If you can fund an endless supply of battlecruisers then good for you - they are a very versatile ship useful for many gangs.
If you can't afford an endless supply of them then they would be the wrong choice. The right choice would be 20-30 frigates and post-match fraps analysis, as suggested by Katalci above. Just get out there and get them blown up - don't be scared of exploding! Frigates are good for solo as their agility means you can pick fights, and they are good for gangs as tackle/web/scout is always welcome as a valuable part of the team. |

So... is it better to run the Web or dual prop?
Me thinks dual prop cause in a Rifter with a MWD your gonna catch what you decide to tackle, but if you need to transversal to tank it... you need the straight up AB right?
Why would a web ever be better unless your in a gang and if that's the case couldn't you split web and distrupter duties between two rifters so that each could still maintain some kind of speed tank?
My brain explodz... you need the web to keep thier MWD down... but you need the AB for transversal...
As if Eve wasn't hard enough before the MWD nerfz... |
