Hello, I don't know if this is in the right board, sorry!
Well, im sure this has been post before.
But, we do we still not have free form maneuvering of our ships? Because as for moving our ships we are extremely limited. We can only point and click and go in a straight line, apart from turning, and eventually into a straight line. Like, Up arrow makes the ship tilt down, Down arrow makes the ship tilt up and left ship turns left, right, ship turns right. (Up=down and Down=up because when you say up, the thrusters are pointing up, making the ship, go down, but of course, that doesn't matter, up can be up and etc.)
And with this, the feature of a JOYSTICK would be available which im sure many players are craving, maybe even a feature allowing buttons on the controller to lock targets and fire weapons and what not.
Any comments? |

And those with a joystick have a huge advantage over those who don't. |

Well, that is surely in the eye of the beholder, as someone using the keyboard may find it easier and to a higher advantage as the don't have to move their hand further.
But something would have to be done about the Yaw motion. |

Edited by: Farseer Zellrenech on 11/01/2009 10:21:13 how about an destination click you can change your click setting from double click to fly a rough direction but my idea for this would change your click setting so that your ship will fly to any point you click 1 time in space.
amagin you are in a chase with a player and you click to a pointin front of your target your ship will make the neccessary speed adjustments to make that angle and your ship will stop on point so you will need to activly navagate your ship in this mode or you will arrive at point and stop.
this will make ships so the do not deviate 1 inch from your intended spot. if your ship does not have the agility to make the angle you desirelets say your in a ship with mwd active with a couple plates your ship has much less agility than normal so hair pin turns are not possible. this would be indicated with a red cursor.
to better explain every click you make you see a double transperant arrow that show your ships flight path to your destination. to spice this up even more you can get an angular path.
so everytime you left click your target this informs your ships computer you intend to intercep this ship. what happen you see ship fly accross your screen so you think if i click this far in front of the enemy you should be able to intercept, cut a b line to his estimated intercept point. if your ship has the capability to intercept when you click in front of target your trajectory arrows will turn green as your see your enemy arrow turn green meaning you will close distance if your arow is red your fligh path has no intercept possibility if enemy arrow is red he is going to outrun you or he is not going fast enough to get to your esimated point. |

There are a couple of problems with this.
First, you can't dodge shots period. They are all calculated to hit not based on trajectory of the shot but instead by the traversal of the target ship, optimum range of gun, sig radius of weapon, etc... There is no ship in EVE with the maneuverability to come close to effecting an instantaneous shot let alone dodge it. That would mean a complete overhaul of the flight and combat system. Once you overhaul the combat system you'll first invalidate quite a few skills that people have spent time training, which will upset a lot of people.
Second, Lag true Real-time flight correction would increase the bandwith and computing power required by each ship considerably. There is a reason why even the best FPS shooters limit the maps to 32-64 people. So you would kiss any large fleet battles goodbye because they would become quickly unplayable again in even the smaller engagement sizes.
Third, limited use. there are very few ship classes that would even benefit from this. Maybe some frigs besides interceptors. The sad reality is that EVE is not a Space fighter game. Most ships just would not be enjoyable to fly with a joystick, they just do not turn quickly enough to make it more than just a novelty.
The big thing is that while it would be great, its one of those things that if it wasn't in at the beginning its probably shouldn't be added in later. Now when they do planetary interaction them adding it for the ground combat would be interesting, because you would probably have what you need to make joystick combat enjoyable.

I've always thought a manual heading setting would be awesome...not a twitch-based one, though. I think having a bearing compass layed out around your ship in the tactical overylay... a 360 degree ring of ticks on the system plane, zero fixed to system north, and a perpendicular ring oriented fore and aft with 0 degrees being fixed to the ships nose and goes +/- 90 degrees. Use the arrow keys to set an heading indicator (U/D pitch -- pilot inversed [U pitches nose down], L/R yaw) and hit an heading change execute. No server call until the execute, limit the number of heading changes to one every 5-10 seconds or so.
Then it *holds* the fricken heading even at 0 m/s, instead of pitching back to zero AOA.
This point and double click crap sucks. |

Not even necessarily a Joystick with button options, but maybe at least keyboard manual movement. Because think about it, if this game were real, which in many many years I have no doubt it wont be, we aren't going to be pointing and clicking in space :P We would have some sort of 360 degree thruster controller.
This game has come an amazing way since it opened some years ago. I just though, and many other players, that this would make the game even more fun and even more enjoyable.
Just a thought. |

hope you guys understand the ammount of server calls it takes to make such a movement control instead of the one we have today.
the reson we click the way we do is that it it requires the least amount of data exchange between server and client |

If the game could support it that would be fine but it can't.
1.Network lag, there would simply be to much data to calc if it was twitch movement, keyboard or joystick doesn't matter, the server could never handle it. That is why most MMORPG's that allow keyboard movement can only allow 2000 to 4000 people on there servers.
2.Eve wasn't designed to use twitch movement, or keyboard controls for flying, this would make some skills invalid, as you would, as said above, have to completely rewrite how the game handles ship movement.
3.Next Time search before you post, this has been here 1000 times and its a big no, it will never happen.
Flight Twitch Joystick
All bad ideas then, just like its a bad idea now. FFS |

No it is a bad idea for the reasons explained by both Re'taka and myself. It would be like going into WOW and saying that they should make PVP full gear drop/destruction. WoW game mechanics were not designed around that to start and there for its a stupid bad idea. Eve was designed with the idea of naval vessels more then fighter planes, and as such has game controls that work well with that mentality and scale. Other Space MMOs have done the Fighter plane mentality with twitch combat and have had to design there game around the limitations of that system. EvE controls would not work it those games that have now left the development stage and those fighter controls will NOT work in the Space game. Like I said in my post, When CCP gets around to ground combat/interaction you may see that become a possibility for in atmo maneuvering.

While this is trully the ideal post and the ideal answer i would be wanting give I must say that CCP is actually working on a joystick manual flight. If I recall correctly though, manual flight is mainly targeted for special situations, as flying through asteroids etc-I'm sure a bunch of players will recall these radar sites that you have to enter one to loot a hacked info shard-, on the other hand, I can't believe that if they design and eventually deploy the system, it wouldn't be available to be used in general.

Nicoli, I was not referring to Re'Taka's reasoning. I was referring to his attitude. Members come on here to ask questions and make comments. The OP, and all members, deserve to be treated in a cordial manner. Out in space, attack and kill, if you want. On these forums, be civil and cordial.
Re'Taka remains a jerk and an idiot. |

I was being straight forward and to the point, first off, this forum isn't for asking questions, its for presenting ideas, and I feel this idea is a bad one, and the poster should have taken the time to see if it had been discussed before.
That doesn't make me an idiot, or a jerk, however I find it funny that the first thing you do is attack me by name calling, instead of proving me wrong.
Not only does this post FFS, but it seams that you do as well.
