Just skip everything like limewire, emule and the like and just stick to bittorrent apps.
All the old stuff (limewire etc.) *used* to be good, but now all the files are rife with viruses and lots of other horrible stuff, the download speeds are terrible, and like a few have mentioned, the resource hogging is through the roof. Mostly due to the RIAA and it's attempts to poison file sharing.

I sit here, mouth agape, surprised that anyone uses such rubbish as limewire or even bit-torrent.
If you really want to get anything that you could possibly dream of you really should be using MIRC. The reasons why:
1) You dont share files to leech files 2) The speed is far faster for dl's than limewire or bit-torrent (I regulary get 500-600kbs as my slow dl speed - usually 1mbps +) 3) A quick run through the tutorial enables you a) to hide your IP addy b) block files types or recieve only certain file types c) turn off chat and requests etc 4) If you are UK resident it opens an interesting legal quandry. Technically (as far as I understand it), in the UK it is illegal to share files but not to download. Most P2P systems use the upload/download style of sharing, THIS is where most people get caught out. For the film/record/software company to catch you taking files with MIRC, they have to be the ones sharing . 5) Its no more insecure than any torrent or p2p programme. Like any downloads, run it through a scanner before you open etc. In the last 6 years i've only recieved 2 infected files and both of those were caught by my scanner.
Edit: awful spelling, i'll leave you to complain about the grammer

Its ballbags tbh.
I mean sometimes you can get lucky but now - you'll search something and every result will just be some **** link with your search terms randomly added in.
If you finally get something, the quality will suck too much to be useful.
At this point in life - Torrenting is the way forward.
That and... Buying... the content. HEAVEN FORBID. |

Limewire is full of viruses and trojans etc, probably more so than piratebay. However it is nice for getting individual songs quickly.

Edited by: Bish Ounen on 12/01/2009 19:21:45 Not only is Limewire (and eMule, and others that use those older styles of file sharing.) INCREDIBLY insecure, and a MASSIVE in-vector for viruses, Trojans and spyware, but they are VERY VERY VERY easy to monitor and snoop on.
I used to work for an ISP (now taken over by Time Warner) and it was CHILD'S PLAY to detect people using these services AND what they were sharing. That was 5 years ago. the detection/snooping technology has advanced since then.
If you are going to file-share, then Bittorrent or IRC is the way to go. If you are going to use bittorrent, then use the uTorrent or Vuze clients. uTorrent if you want a "cleaner" and more straightforward approach, Vuze if you want a more multimedia-centric approach with broader flexibility.
Alternately, use MIRC and dig up the proper IRC channels. This is probably the FASTEST way to get certain items, but it requires a more technical mind and a willingness to dig around in alot of different IRC channels. But since most of what is available via various Bittorrent sites originates from the IRC channels, Using MIRC is pretty much going right to the source. |

Those of you who are looking to get into MIRC/IRC (use MIRC though cos its better ), you have to use the XDCC to search for your desired files. This site here is a popular one but make sure you have pop-ups turned off and dont click on any adverts
Use the search bar there to look for the file you want, it links you to the name of the chat-room and on what server. If you have MIRC open, it automatically goes to that room, ctl+c in chat box and wait for your stuff to download. There may be a wait time so just be patient
There are plenty of xdcc sites out there but I aint giving you mine as I dont want to have you all in my rooms leeching all the files i want to leech :)

Are you aware that the RIAA (or rather a subsidiary of it but same thing really) own Bit Torrent and uTorrent? There has been evidence that the newer clients in fact do send data back to them.
In short, use older versions if you use them. Safe builds for Azureus and uTorrent are:
utorrent 1.6.474 azureus 2.5.0.4

Also your half intelligent comment about Vista hugging resources wasn't constructive, so go whine elsewhere about constructive posting.

Rapidshare.com account > any other way of downloading apps, movies, music ect ect ect. I get Download speeds up to 3mbs. Plus you pay a monthly fee of $10 making it legal in any country. You can also get free accounts by uploading **** for others to dl, If you get enough hits in one month, your next month is free. |
