'Carbon Cost' of Google revealed.
So... Everytime I google something - I may as well just imagine a little 7g puff of Co2 emanating from my PC?
This is getting a bit ridiculous to be honest. Who exactly is thinking it's a great idea to pay some "Doctor" to spend time working out how much Carbon Dioxide you apparently make if you Google something?
I don't even know how something so trivial is even relevant enough to have in the daily news...
I bet you we'll have someone analysing how much Co2 we're causing by breathing - and what steps we should take to stop or at least cut down on breathing. |

Carbon Footprints are absolute nonsense anyway. My carbon footprint is lower if I buy a 30 year old car that's done less than 150,000 miles with a 5 litre V8 getting 10 mpg and run for 12,000 miles over 5 years than if I were to buy a brand new 1.1 litre Nissan getting 50 mpg or similar and do the same: In other words, ignore anyone who tries to talk about carbon footprints in a serious discussion.
I'd also spend less money on fuel in that five year period to make up the difference in the costs of the vehicles.
Carbon footprints are *******s. |

This site claims 1,027,316.855 Watt hours saved with their google search just from the background being black.

They want to make carbon dioxide a commodity, so that every time you breath out you have to pay tax.

Quote: "In 2007, we co-founded the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. This non-profit consortium is committed to cutting the energy consumed by computers in half by 2010 and so reducing global CO2 emissions by 54 million tons per year. That's a lot of kettles."
Owned.
Seriously, let's start a counter-research to calculate how much CO2 was produced in this utterly useless research >_> Or put these numbers next to other values and see how insignificant they suddenly become |

@op: stupid indeed, money wasted that could have been spent on something better like solar panels, etc.

Whether or not running your car on gasoline is the cause of global warming I don't like being dependent on a foreign fuel source as much as we (US) is now. |

Im burning tires, running 50 google searches a second on a macro and boil 5 kettles to make 1 cup of coffee. Also, i chopped down all the trees in my back garden, killed the grass with weedkiller, replaced it with pebbles and run my car on crude oil.

Oh FFS, the stupidity in this thread is just painful.
Obviously clicking the "search" button doesn't emit a little puff of carbon from a server farm somewhere, that number is just the total carbon emissions from google divided by the number of searches performed. For the clueless: it's an average.
As for whether it's a good idea to discuss it, yes, it is. It's an attempt to make people aware of the fact that carbon emissions are a problem with ALL energy use, not just the typical things everyone thinks about (factories with clouds of black smoke, driving 100 miles a day, etc). Trying to reduce carbon emissions from computers is a perfectly legitimate idea, especially since the proposals involve increasing efficiency (always a good idea anyway), not shutting down google or anything. |

Actually, I think the point was too show how knee-jerk alarmists are kinda going a little over board with the whole carbon footprint thing. Being 'Green' is important, and we should protect the enviroment as best we can.
However the eco-****'s are getting on my nerves lately. |

ok i don't think we need to worry about much bud except getting beaten up cause we drive a SUV or a big ass truck and people should not worry about our carbon emissions hehe the plants are taking care of it for us PLUS the new carbon dioxide catalyst coming out will cut our emissions drastically also to add there is such tech. out right now but EVERYONE either is ignoring it or not seeing it. basically it cleans CO2 out of the air. but then the plants will die if everyone has one hehe
maybe i shouldn't of jumped through that gate |

I walk my dog around the block while riding on my lawnmower, I drive to the mailbox and back in one of my 10 Hummers that I like to leave idling at night because the sound soothes me, I purposely throw soda can rings into the ocean, and if any gas sits in my tank for more than a day I either burn it in my weekly plastic pile or dump it down the drain, I like my gasoline fresh you see...

You know, soccer mom's driving a HUGE SUV tend to **** me off. And it's not so much that they spend enough money on fuel every year that they could afford to buy themselves a more eco friendly option with said money. It's not the amount of toxic exhaust spewing at me and other vertically challenged motorists. Naw, it's the fact the dumbasses can't drive the ****ing things to save their own consumer-based lives. shin ku myo u
