I have been trying to do a bit of low sec roaming with very little sucess, i'm currently using an incursus. The problem arises when I engage on a gate I tend to get alpha'd by the gate guns :(
So I was wondering what sort of ship would be good for roaming around low sec in, but could handle gate guns long enough to kill a cruiser.
I was thinking assault frigates, then won't they have the same problem as my incursus? |

Battlecruisers and bigger. If its 1vs1 a well-flown cruiser will kill you with the sentries helping tho if you're in a BC.
But I'd suggest you try frigates in the faction warfare areas first, there is plenty of pvp away from the gate guns in lowsec. |

Anything smaller than a battlecruiser will have problems with the gateguns. Best just keep your fights in belts and planets. |

Yeah, they will.
Gate guns are 350 dps.

Brutix, Mega, Hype are the common ships to fight under sentry aggro but Gank fitted Deimos does the job to against a single Cruiser(beside a 1600mm Plated Rupture or Rax).

Edited by: Enden Assulu on 12/01/2009 23:36:06 Ok, if i was to try a brutix (I currently have AWU IV fitting skills V and can use t2 medium blsters) What sort of fit would I aim to use? Passive or active?
And what about these faction warefare places some one mentioned, where can i find them?

1600mm RT Plates are your frind for ganking people under Sentry aggro.
Biggest Blastery you can mount with your spare Grid Disruptor, 2x Webs, MWD EANM, DCU, 1600mm RT, 2x MFS
Kill the target fast, grap the loot and warp off, simple and easy.
DonŠt realy know about where FW is today, but Tama should be still one of the main points for Gallente\Caldari FW fights.

Awesome Brutix fit I used to gatecamp with, tech 1 drones because they're more than likely to get popped by sentries and a buffer/gank fit to get it all over quickly. Alternatively, switch the Sensor Booster for either a Warp Scrambler II or some ECCM if your planning on fighting away from gates. Old Man Star, Tama, Rancer, and Amamake are very popular places for fights, just wouldn't reccomend going alone. |

BCs can take gate guns, but they can't perma-tank them (except maybe the Drake, and then by gimping tackle/speed), especially not alone. A gang of BCs is better than a single BC, because the gate guns will shoot you several times and then cycle to another target for a while.
Better just stick to your incursus and go roam the asteroid belts or FW complexes or regular DED complexes, which show up as beacons on the overview. |

If you like frigs you would probably love to use Ishkur for this. Of course it can't tank the guns either, but it's a good belt runner and pvp for low sec. |

Thanks for all the setups!
About belts, i have one problem with thme there is never anyone in them, people tend to be docked :) Although i have been wanting to try the Ishkur for a while now so i might give the belts another shot. |

I learned about gate guns the hard way too. They have insane tracking so ships which rely on speed for all or part of their tank are hosed.

Like others have said, don't attempt to tank sentrygun fire in anything smaller than a BC, unless you're agressing a shuttle pherhaps and you are in no risk of being tackled.
Gallente have access to many great solo/gang roaming ships,
I recommend the following ships,
Tristan, Incursus, Ishkur, Vexor, Thorax, Brutix, Myrmidon, Ishtar, Dominix, Megathron
If you've got little SP or your budget is low then a t1 fit Brutix is probably the best option, it packs a decent punch and has good EHP for only around 4-5mil loss when it pops. Expect to die alot when solo roaming, at least early on as you're new in the area. |

I would suggest that if you are mainly flying (and likely skilled for?) small ships then go to 0.0
No gate guns = much more fun for a frigate/cruiser pilot. You will also find more fights you just have to kinda learn to run away and evade to survive more than you do in lowsec. |

I jsut came from there :)
I did use to fly a Ceptor (Ares/Crow) and i can fly gallente/caldari assault frigates, but i can also fly a dominix with Ogre IIs and t2 tank i just don't like battle ships for roaming they tend to attract alot of unwanted attention and lack the ability to escape quickly.
I would still like tips on how to actually find guys in belts since that seems to be my main problem, as from what people say it would open alot more ships for me to use.

Edited by: Lee Wai on 13/01/2009 22:58:56 It sounds like you need a walkthrough of the basics of eve tbh..
I can recommend reading this guide on piracy, it's written for new players and I think you will find it very helpfull. It explains everything you need to know, from fitting your ships, flying them, and finding your targets. I've been playing this game for more than 2 years, more than half of it doing piracy, and I still enjoyed reading this guide. it is very well written and quite entertaining. Being a pirate is in my opinion the fastest and best way to learn how to pvp. You can kill everyone, and when your sec status goes below -5 and you become an outlaw. You will then learn to stay safe when flying around, since everyone will have a go at you if they can. It teaches you to minimize stupid careless losses, and keeps you on your toes. :)
Orignal eve-o post for the piracy guide. |
