I think most of us here can agree that EVE is one of the best games we own...
I was just wondering then, why are the forums so pitifull? They have been since beta... Very slow, no search function...
Most of the corporation websites I've visited are of much higher quality... ( I know many more people visit this website, but hey, the corps are not getting paid money by it's usesrs like CCP is..)
Should we as subscribers have a nice speedy searchable forum as part of our monthly fee, abscent of the MOD SQUAD'S harsh censorship? Or is it just me who thinks this way?
I've been to a lot of game websites, this one ranks at the bottom as far as performance is concerned...
The content is great, but the layout, speed & forum moderation is poor at best...
I'd pay a dollar more per month to get a real game forum...
I mine rocks... Don't touch my rocks... |

Well I can't say I'd pay much more, but even some freeware forums have the features you suggest. Also watched posts would be nice.

While the design is nice, not offensive to the eye, the speed is rather sluggish to say the least. Search would be nice, as would a pm service, but i realise that can take up quite a bit of room

Speed is an issue for me too. A search function would be good, but there seem to be some problems with that. It's not as easy to put in as we might think.

Im sure t20 could gives us the stats, but I doubt many corporate forums have hundreds of users accessing them every minute. Site functions such as search engines are easy to put in but very resource intensive. Its not that they cannot put them in, but cpu and bw load probably prevents them from doing so.
On a site note, t20 - can you move the Eve library forum please to below the Intergalactic Summit forum - ta!

As far as the speed is concerned, if it meant taking away the ability to view your character stats online to get more speed, plz do it!
And as far as the searh function being "hard" This is probably the first game website I've been to that does not have one...

It's probably a database thing, on both accounts. I hear that the database is rather complicated, hence the (erratic) speed issues and lack of search engine

Adding a search function on a big active forum like this which will prolly be used a lot could really slow the server down. Something we dont need no?
And using google works fine at the moment. ---------------------------

It annoys me that the site doesn't remember that you're logged in properly unless you click on the EVE Insider link and then it brings you in. Also the lack of a search function is really weird, and there's plenty of forums out there that dwarf this one in terms of users and posts that have them so I don't quite follow the argument against them.
On the plus side it looks great (as does EVE as a whole) and has some *****ing content. I also don't personally find it slow - I'd rate it averagish on that score, but I guess different people have different tolerance levels.

This forum is quite unique. It shows our actual character avatar, race name, and corp name. I too get speed issues at times (especially during downtime)
I believe the problem is that the forum is tied too much to the overall character database (correct me if i'm wrong). So it constantly retrieves information there thus slowing down its performance.
I really wish I knew. But yea, speed is an issue for me many times throughout the day.

Joshua Calvert came up with this method of searching, better than nothing:
Go to google.com and type this line in the search box: site: myeve.eve-online.com: xxxxxxx
Where'xxxxxx' is what you are searching for.
Once again, props to Josh for that one

for all you Firefox(mozilla?) users go here to add a search toolbar to your browser. MSIE user can search using the google toolbar. You can choose to search "Current Site." That way you don't even have to leave the forums. hope this helps.

Orestes - so you take an index of topics for the search each day at DT, no? Sure it creates high forum lag for several minutes, that's why you'd do it at DT.
There are ways and means and some boards out there already use em.

The problem is that since the forums are on the gameservers a search function might slow down the game itself, not the character stats.
All I know is that t20 was working on a search function but there were problems with it, I don't know what the problems were exactly.

Edited by: Bhaal on 27/07/2004 14:45:07 It just took over 3 minutes for me to be able to reply to this thread due to loading time, that is about 2 min & 50 seconds too long... That is the technical problem...
Maybe the Forums should not be on the game server, I have no need to see the ugly mugs of those I'm insulting or flaming...
Seeing your character stats & such is cute, but if that is the reason we don't have a search function, and the forums take forever to load, than it was not smart to put the forums on the game server... Fix it...
We can get all the information in-game that we can here, no need to have it slow down the forums IMO...
I also have a big problem with ISD, but I don't forsee a major change in forum moderation anytime soon... The profanity filter should go as well... ------------------------------------------------ "for piece sakes!" |

Neocron's forum uses vb3 tied into account management so only people with active accounts can post.
It's moderators are annoying, but nowhere near the level of eve I'm afraid.
Things I'd like:
Cut the stupidly long sigs that contains a graphic and 4 or 5 quotes underneath it.
Search function.
Proper control panel with such things as PM's and subscribing to threads.
Better profanity filter.
Less threads being deleted with no message, and no sign they ever existed.

This is a question that comes up from time to time. Currently, the game and forums are hosted by the same server bank. As a search feature is somewhat resource intensive, this would cause an increase in, you guessed it, lag in the game.
The web and server staff do have plans to impliment a search feature on the forums, but the forums need to be taken off of the current servers for obvious reasons. When I asked t20 about this in the past, there were plans being made do to so and yet maintain the ability to look at character sheets, have the portraits next to forum posts, etc.
This is something that is going to happen after Shiva at the earliest.

you could probably set up a server for an independent forum that grabs character image data daily from Tranquillity in about 30 minutes. The character info can stillbe on the same server. ----------------------------------- "Political Correctness, the illegitimate step-child of liberalism, is cultlike in its establishment of correct speech.
