after reading the threads on this issue i can not make head nor tails of the abreviations. My current config HI 2x 650 mm arty medium projectil 1x 250 rail hedium hybrid 2 x nutron blaster small hybrid. Medium 1x X-5 warp distabaliser 1-- nice pirate drop 1x 10mn ab 1x med shield extender LOW 2x overdrives 1 1x warp stabaliser 1x small armor repair-- cant fit medium 1x basic gyrostabaliser. soon to be gyro stabaliser 1
This works but i take alot for dmg as for some reason i miss completely ALOT. Even staying at about 15k away i miss. thats about opt range for me. except the light nutrons i have to be with in 8 for them to hit good. My problem is acuracy and then how can i get meduim nutrons on my ship. The are the best hybrid blaster i use antimater ammo since it has the best hybrid damage and the projectiles use EMP because that is the best projectile ammo. Can some one give me a few suggestions. The ones i have seen on the boards i cant tell what the abreviations are and weather they are meduim or small weapons. In my mind a cruiser should only have a 1 or 2 small weapons on it. I use 4x hammerhead 1 since i dont have drone 5 yet. i have engineering 4 and electronics 4 along with level 3 of all sub skills under those two.

Okay. First things first, you need to make some decisions regarding your comat style. Do you want to engage from long-range or short-range, and do you want to use Hybrid Turrets to take advantage of the Thorax's turret bonuses instead of projectile weapons. Once you decide what fighting style you want, you can easily determine what the best weapons and modules for the job are. For instance, the Thorax does generally much better with the following two combinations. For long-range, use Rails and go for modules that increase your shield abilities, like the extenders, hardeners, and boosters; you can lose the scrambler or webifier for long-range combat since you wouldn't use it too much being out of range, and might want to use a Cap Recharger I instead of the warp disruptor. For short-range, use Blasters and go for modules that increase your armour, like plating, wards (I think that's what armour hardeners are called), and repairers; the warp scrambler is still less effective, although I do recommend using a webifier to hold them down while you pummel them with blasters. I also recommend at least one Cap Recharger for short-range setups as well, because cap is life and you can never have enough. The afterburner is always a good thing to have, but loose the overdrives if you're going long range, and lose them for short-range as well once you can use and equip a microwarpdrive. The damage, tracking, and rate of fire mods are always good choices, but should be second to utility modules like Reactor Control Units and Co-Processors, which you will likely need to fit 5 blasters or 5 rails; I strongly recommend using only 4 weapons, so you can equip more and better modules anyways. And remember, no matter what your combat style, always use drones; train for heavy drones if you can, but at least use a bunch of medium drones, as these will be your primary anti-frigate defense.
I fly the long-range setup myself at the moment, mostly because I don't feel I have the skills or experience neccessary to make blasters and close-range combat work.
Anyways, I hope this was of some help to you.

First my normal Combat Setup (NPC):
3 Dual 150MM (Medium Hybrids) 2 250MM (Medium Hybrid)
1 MN MWD 2 Medium Shield Boosters
2 Named Cargo Expanders or Cargo Expander 1's 2 RCU's 1 Co Processor 1
With this setup your covered from 10km's to 45km's... If anything gets within 10 Km's of ya....that is why you have a large drone bay....and hopefully a high drone skill...Just carry 20 Mediums Drones with ya (HammerHeads/Infiltrators)
Some would say cargo expanders are a waste of low slots...but when collecting loot is my primary concern when hunting...more cargo more loot...

This works great for me.........
3X 250mm 2X 150mm Dual 1X Medium Sheild Extender 2 1X Medium Sheild Booster 2 1X Tracking Enhancer 2 2X RCU 1X AB tech 2 1X Tracking Computer 2
I have a 2000 sheild and fly at 360 and fight at about 50-60k out and do about 50-165 damage with a ROF of 4.1 and 2.7 sec. Works very nice even in 0.0
P.S. I do have about 3 million skill points in just Gunnery though.

Thorax (Standard NPC hunting/Agent Missons) ive used this one to take spawns with 1 ascribber & 5 terrorist npc rats Just orbit at 20km and fire at NPC's Hi's * 4 250mm Railguns w/Thorium Ammo or (Depending on your pg) * 3 250mm Railguns w/thorium * 2 dual 150mm w/iron ammo (use iron so both optimal ranges are similar) Mid's * Medium Neutron(SB) * Cap Recharger I * Kentic Shield Hardener Low's * 3 ODI's * 2 PDU's
+ 8 Wasp Heavy Drones (Deploy these to take on smaller cruiser or frigate npc's while you take on the bigger ones)
Blaster Rax (PVP) Use this setup to mwd up close to your enemy webby and warp scramble them while your drones and ion blasters rip them to shreads.
Hi's * 5 ion blasters Mid's * 10mn MWD * Webby * Warp Scrambler Low's * Damnage Mod * 2 cap relays * 2 pdu
+ 8 Ogre Heavy Drones (Deploy after your blasters are ripping on your enemy to add to the damage)

Thanks all for the info. I tried this out last night..
HI 2x 250 mm rail antimater ammo 1x 150 mm rail antimanter ammo 2x light nutron blaster antimater ammo
MED 1x med shield boost 1 1x med shield extender 1 1x 10mn ab
LOW 2x over drive... not sure what to replace these with 1x med armor repair 1x RoF/Dmg mod 1x Acuracy/ tracking speed mod.
4x Hammerhead light drones.. until i get heavy drones next week.
with my old set up i could easaly own the rats in a nearby 0.5 sector... last night with this new set up even though my dmg what higher and my shield better, and my acuracy slightly better... I damn near lost the thorax and was only able to take out one of the rats kestrels.. I just don't know what to do to increase range, dmg, and acuracy i have 10 skills in gunnery and more on the way. i just can't figure out what i am doing wrong...

Your still combining rails and blasters; one works at like 30+KM and the other works at like 6KM away. You need to pick your combat preferance, which sounds like long range, and then get some good ammo for the rails; I recommend Tungsten for reduced cap, no range penalty, and decent damage. And again, pick whether you want to shield tank or armour tank; do not do both, as that is a waste of slots and you'll die, which I think you've proven. Personally, you may want to try losing the mid slot items and armour items in the low slots and just use 2 Cap Rechargers and 1 medium shield booster. That's it for now.

Yes, you need to choose your range of combat. Since you are using a Thorax, I would suggest that you go with only hybrid turrets. Try the exact combo I posted earlier or try someone else's who posted and you'll see that the Thorax is the most feared cruiser out there. BTW I use iridium ammo for your FYI.

Well, when (tm) new drone rules are implemented, for example the Thorax from my understand will be able to carry 36 HammerHeads....better carry a lot of SB's then....because 36 hammerheads in waves of ten....can ruin anyones day....

Ok so what you all are saying is basicly dont worry about short range weapons for the frig that get in close because thats what my drones are for? Also i've been looking at the damage of the ammos and Antimater has the best damage. Also Nutron blasters have the best damage modifyer for the blasters. and the 250 rails are the best damaging rails at the medium level... Are you saying that i should stop looking at the damage and look at the range penalties and cap useage instead? I really dont have a cap problem or a power problem i have engineering 4 and electronics 4 along with a slew of the sub skills for each all at or about level 3. also i have 10 skills in gunnery and soon to be more at or near level 2 except gunnery at level 4 and projectile small at level 3. I'm just gona print this post out and take it home and experiment tonight. Thanks all you've been a great help.

Shadukar - That's pretty much the gist of it, although I wouldn't use Antimatter Ammo unless you plan on being right in their face, ala Blasters. I would also only test your setups with 4 of either of those two weapon types and see which you prefer; if you really want to later on, you can use a fifth, but using only 4 allows for a much more defensive setup, and the longer you last, the more damage you can do. And yes, drones take out frigates quite well, so no need to worry about hose; if you're going to go blasters though, launch drones only after the NPCs have you locked, and then tank the damage while you shoot at them and let your drones kill them off. In general though, yeah, you really have to watch your range and cap usage, and the best way to do that is to choose your ammo correctly, depending on style. Anyways, I'm glad we could be of assistance.

Ok its been mentioned but dont mix long and close range setups
I use a thorax occasionally still and use the following setup I might try an armor tank setup next to see how they go
Hi = 5 250 rails or 5 200 mm rails if you dont have the L5 eng skills.
Med 1 med CL-5 1 sheild hardener (what ever damage you npc's do most) 1 T2 or named tracking comp
Low 2 T2 or named hybrid damage mod, power diags/ Cap charger 20% one with the cap size hit. Or you can still use cpr's
In an armor tank setup
mids would be T2 (or best) tracking comp and 2 T2 (or best cap chargers)
low slot 1 T2 med armor repairer, 1 hardener (npc damagfe specific) 3 cpr's
Drone bay full of you best drones however, if the thorax drone bay is reduced to 1000 you will need to switch to med drones.
Good luck

Without a scrambler of some kind you are relying totally upon luck or the unwary in order to get a kill. Sacrifice a cap recharger 2 and mount a 7.5 km scrambler, and then go to work.
