First of all, this is not a troll topic, nor a flaming one. Just wanted to share my personal thoughts about character planning software.
English is not my mother tongue, so sorry about that too :)
In my opinion, EveMon is a great utility. Problem is, it makes everything for you. Isn't it more interesting to plan your way by yourself? Sure, you will probably make mistakes but hey, it's part of the learning process. At least, those are YOUR own mistakes, not the software ones.
Then, software planners would never be perfect. Or even better, human's interpretation is even worse. i.e. many people think that learning skills should be trained only when Evemon tells them to do so. WTF? That's a bad understanding. In your Eve-Online "life" you will be training loads of things, not just the ones you plan for next month. So, these learning skills should be trained at first.
And we could go on. Seriously, using your own brain is more satisfactory. Even if you are managing 3 or more characters, it will be exciting to organize them all by yourself. This exercise will train your real life memory, willpower, intelligence... and when you reach your goals, you will be proud of having got them all by your own merits, not because of some piece of software telling you what to do :)

That's the nice thing about optional, 3rd party tools.
They're optional.
Some people use EVE-MON for training plans, some use it simply to monitor training times out of game, and some don't use it at all.
Whatever floats your boat, really. |

I actually like to use a calculator for fitting, calculate cap uses, test things in my head, plan my skills with the notepad...all ingame.
I prefer to use the tools of the game for everything i do, kind of, purist that way.
Try calculating the maximum repair output of a guardian with just the calculator and no notepad and you'll have a blast |

Edited by: Price McChecker on 13/01/2009 15:11:24 You still need the same level of brain power; you just need to put in much less effort when using it. (Note, I'm assuming that it requires a miniscule portion of your brain to do the following: read data, copy out formulae, plug data into formulae, poke calculator, use pen to write down result... if it requires more than that, then you're brain is faulty. Ask providence for a refund.)
The decisions you have to make, and information you have available to you are the same regardless of the tool you are using. However, Evemon (and tools like EFT) provide you with that info MUCH faster, and in a considerably more convenient format.
Ultimately, you've still got the same game to play once you've done... but you could be done in 5 minutes, with no fuss, or half an hour, with notepads of paper cluttering your desk; its your choice! |

I only use Eve-mon to tell me when my current skill is going to finish and to force my windowed clients to fill the screen like fullscreen. I've played with some of the other features but they don't make a whole lot of sense to me. |

Does everything for you? You mean, tells you what time each skill you've added to your planned list will complete? Uh. sure.
Anyway, I'm glad you're so hard core. You get a brownie. |

this is cheating and metagaming.
i don't even calculate these things, because it ruins the game and takes all the challenge out of it for me. i fit random modules from my hanger and have passive mods hidden so i have no idea what i'm flying. gives eve it's edge for me.
anything else is just for script kiddies and glue sniffers. |

EVEMON is great for when you are listening to music or fleet comms and your EVE sound is turned off and SKILL TRAINING COMPLETE deafens everyone in a 4 block radius of your computer. |

Yeah...that's why I stopped playing Eve. Does everything for you. Nothing wrong with that - it's fine for the peasants.
Now I only simulate internet spaceships in my head. I got each of my five titans using my own real-life intelligence and imagination, not because a piece of software told me I got them. Much more satisfying. |

I tried to use EVE-mon on my first char, and I have so many things I wanted to do in EVE that it was simply depressing every time I logged into EVE-mon and saw "1000d til skill plan completion".
I use it now as a tool for monitoring how long it would take me to learn to fly certain ship setups, or to finish training for a particular profession or skill area. I don't plan it anymore. |

What nonsense you preach.
Because I use eve-mon, I can focus on other things more. It's what you want your mind to do. Otherwise stop using EVERYTHING you take for granted and think about it all! You will never be able too, so that's where eve-mon helps you to save time on such boring things, to do more exciting things... |

If you say, "I want to use ship X and module Y!" and train up only the prereqs for those items, you're going to suck. Evemon helps you plan skills but if you let it do the whole job for you you'll end up substantially less than optimal.
... and I can never stick with a skill plan anyway. I like Evemon because it screams "SKILL TRAINING COMPLETED!!!!!!" at me in the middle of the night for the odd times I forget.
I also like its item database. Looking up stats on random items is much easier (and more comprehensive) in EFT than in Evemon. |

When I was on holiday with family I worked out a skillplan, and resistences I got on ship setups because I was being driven around for 6 hours a day.
However now I am home, I have much better things to do. |

EVEMON sends me a text message 30mins before a skill finishes, apart from that I use to look up ship stats off line.
Kudos to the devs of it!

there is a LOT of stuff I can do in my head, but it's just not worth expending the thought-power when there are tools to do it for you.
for example, i could do my taxes without a piece of software or an advisor, but really, how does doing that help me? |

No, I'm lazy and would rather use a 3rd party program to do this for me

Not really, using EVEMon's skill plans you only need to train the skillbooks it tells you to get to what you want (your end result ship/weapon/module) as quickly as possible - no wasting SP. In short, its ultimate efficiency
Originally by: Dani SP And we could go on. Seriously, using your own brain is more satisfactory.
Again - no. I'm lazy
You know, nobody is forcing you to use EVEMon, EFT, etc - right? For me, personally I love both programs as they are far more efficient, faster and accurate at doing what they do that I could ever be.
