Edited by: Heyte on 14/01/2009 02:43:52 Here what's been established so far.
A long time ago, I tried writing a system for PbP style eve tabletop gaming based on the 3.5 D20 system. All the rules are hombrewed and everything, however I feel as if I drastically missed some major items that make up the game (beyond the fact that ships and modules aren't listed aside from the capsule itself).
Either that or the rules conflict or are unbalanced in one way or another; beyond what some of the people on the site commented as being 'unfitting for general D&D play'. To the latter issue, of course it is. The system is for covering whether you want to jump into a spaceship or not in the New Eden setting specifically (or at least the stylistic setting that is New Eden; New Eden is very large).
Medieval adventurers wouldn't be able to match with Eve tech normally, and in a setting like Eve, it's either get in a space ship or GTFO (although it could be suggested that rules might be established for life as a foot-soldier or piloting a uni-ship; however ccp hasn't made such a thing canon yet).
So, input? Constructive criticism please.

Of course, reviewers will require familiarity with the D20 3.5 tabletop gaming system before they can post said constructive criticism.

Since CCP bought White wolf gaming, you should respect their system and make a Nice D10 based system
Eve's 5 skill level system transfers nicely to white wolve's 5 dot attribute system well.

THIS :)
d10 systems work way better. Or at least are different. I'm so sick of d20.

Edited by: Heyte on 14/01/2009 03:33:03 Unfortunately I'm not familiar with that system. :P
Hopefully one of you can ratify the system I already created. One of my main concerns, I should note, is that the system basically requires a calculator from the players to play. It also deals with high numbers (say multiple guns hit and deal a total of 1400 damage).
Is there a way to calculate the varying factors of eve combat, ie., that don't take away from 3.5 and instead build on a whole new PbP system altogether (because people seem keen to do that with certain settings).
Also, the three dimensional aspect of space on paper is a concern too, since it would be difficult to sketch out. I'm thinking of working it back to 2D somehow, really.
So in short, I need advise from veteran tabletop gamers who are keen with 3.5 as it were?

awww... I was totally expecting a random number generator that had an animated d20 that would always roll the same number

Edited by: Heyte on 14/01/2009 04:00:54 That's really nice, but does anyone have the time and patience to read over my iteration?
Also, that's just a wiki article. It doesn't even tell me how to go about translating a setting. It was marked as lacking essential detail. >_>

Dont try to reinvent the wheel, make way for grand daddy of spaceship pnp from year 1977... Yes. Traveller. The one and only pnp that used graph paper where you could design your spaceships, calculate how different mass affected to engine thrust under various planets orbits etc. Read it trough and get some ideas for spaceship part, most likely you can reuse and just change names for various things. I wouldnt be supriced if some hc Traveller & Eve fans already would be running homebrew setups, after all, if you want to play space simulation in pnp, you use traveller.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traveller_(role-playing_game) <-check there, no it cannot be linked as silly forums wont understand the ( ) there just copy&paste.
As for more character based rp and rules, well;
During my keeper years, going trough in number of 15+ years of pnp gaming and various settings I've found out that these "rules" have worked for our core group.
Low magic, all settings from fantasy to scifi really ->Call of Cthulhu d100 modified rules. Character power range anything from dying from knife slash to bit above human Medium magic, all settings, from vampire to mage to average d&d etc ->d10 WoD modified/Eden Studio's Unisystem. Chars power is from previous to borderlining invulnerability, they might die from gunshot but have way to escape death(for xcample Eve pod system or from other systems various ctrl+q powers.) High magic, all settings ->Diceless Amber with just stats. God characters and those games where you dont plan to be any/very little of pc life threatening combat.
It all boils down to what your core group is, it's useless to try to push d&d rules for Demigod character, it just becomes table & dicerolling hell and in the same way it's useless to try get good dialog demanding system(amber) going for random d&d dungeon slashing group.
tl:dr Check the Traveller for ideas, rules are... you'll see ;) |

Perhaps there's a way to rehash the creation technique portrayed in traveller into a methodology in 3.5 for the Eve universe? |

Its clearly a labor of love but if you actually want to play this monster I'd suggest a healthy application of the KISS principle.
Use the rules for AC and Attack power, modify the stats based on a size scale, similar to what already exists, and for speed.
Why have stats to survive your capsule exploding? It's dice rolling for no reason, at all. You made the DC 200 check? Great, now you die of vacuum exposure, congrats.
Why all the bother about becoming a pod pilot? Surly all PC will begin game with that status.
I have to admit I only skimmed so this is my tl;dr response, but ambitious as you are, why? EVE's draw is that there are thousands and thousands of us effecting each other. pnp you have you and 5-10 others? You can't properly simulate the market, the true scale of the game or the combat. You won't have the pretty effects. If this is you bridging some of your pnp pals to mmo, I hate to say it but start em on wow. It's closer to what they are used to and it gets old fast. Once they are sick of people with question marks over their heads, send em this way.

Edited by: Heyte on 14/01/2009 07:08:14 Bah, it's a labor of love, as you say.
The PnP system would mostly revolve around combat. Things like building an empire would mostly be assumed, or at least similar to building an empire in the general D&D setting. Although attacks on your empire would be eve-ish. You'd find npcs warping in on your POS (where having an npc friendly man the turrets leaves you to assume that it's being defended).
It's quite simple, once the mechanics are figured out. Also, roleplaying comes a lot more easily, where in actual eve you'd get mostly 'luls' and flames for your troubles. In the PnP system, the GM could even offer 'comm channels' to the PCs in jest. Channels like Eve Radio. :P
DC 200 saving throw justifies that if the PC is immune to the nanotoxin and vacuum through some other condition, then other circumstances might become apparent outside of playing the mmo.
What exactly is the KISS principle? I'm still looking for people to help me out. |

With all the d20 & before that the GURPS hype, there was plenty of spin-offs made and there is d20 Traveller out there. If you absolutely want to do 3.5 based, you could check the D20 traveller and use it in hand to hand with one of the older Traveller version as I fear some of the more in-depth rules must have been cut away in d20 to make it fit to 400 pages. Then use those two together, with your own ideas to find perfect balance. It's epic undertaking but then again so are all homebrews.
Remember you dont need to finish it all at once, your group makes good sacrificial lambs to test the system early on. Say for eve universe and you wish it to be pod pilot rp, there is bound to be ship fights. A lot. Perhaps they're part of some faction militia, on campaign against xyz? That way you could straight away cut over 80% of eve ships & mods out of question and add them when feeling like it. Or cut away is wrong term, of course they'll still see ships passing, but you dont need to figure out the stats for each different ship in pnp terms.
Last I would direct you where to find Traveller for free; Out of net, old dm farts around where you are, local rpg shopkeeper mostly sports a copy if you want to pay(or beg his copy for loan) etc. Oh and http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Discuss/forumdisplay.php?f=3 might be place where you could find actual experts should you pursue Traveller road. I have no idea what kind of people lurk at there but they cant be much more hostile then Eve-o-foras usually are.
tl:dr There's D20 Traveller you could use.
EDIT: KISS is short for "Keep It Simple Stupid", a rule that can be applied to anything, especially for pnp rules. |
