Ok heres the thing, i am working towards getting a hulk but, at the minute i am using a Mega with 7 x miner II's but i am wondering if a Retriever fitted with 2 x strip miner II's would mine faster.
any help would be appriecated, yes im old school

Depends on your skills, iirc they are about the same, although having a reasonable cargohold is nice. I think if you can use the T2 crystals in Strip IIs then the Retreiver would be better. You should still be able to tank rats if you are in high-sec (i'm assuming you are). For 0.0 you need a hulk.
Your doing the right thing, get a hulk.

With barebones skills with a hulk I get the same mining done as maelstrom X8 Miner II's just extra cargo bay and small tank. |

The Hulk is the best ore miner around, no question. BS's can min ok, but with just a few more SP a Hulk beats them by far. Hulks is even better in mining gangs with bonuses. |

I can get a slightly better rate on a Rokh with 8 x minerII's than i can using a retriever.
The main differences are that the bs obviously has a much better tank than the barge and is far more manoeuverable around a belt (ab or mwd fitted) but the barge has the larger cargo capacity.
If you can have your hauling taken care of, then i would stick with the bs until you get the Hulk skill. If hauling with the same char, then i'd switch to the retriever.

Ya get a Hulk and you won't even have to pay 500mil like I did for the one sitting in my hangar.

The battleship will outmine a retriver because you can slap the mining upgrades in the lows. The Rohk is the best battleship miner because of the higher CPU, but a Mega with 7x Miner II's will still pull in more then a Retriver.
Depending on your skills you can slap a MLU II in the mega + a ton of expanders and get a cargo hold larger then the Retriver.
I fly a fully T2 Hulk myself so I went back and did a compare without mining drones using Miner II lasers:
Retriver: 550m3/Minute
Mega: 715m3/Minute
Now here is something most people don't consider, using Modulated Deepcore Miner II's:
Mega: 775m3/Minute with T1 crystal
Mega: 835m3/Minute with T2 Crystals
A Rohk with a single MLU II with Deep Core: 954m3 and can get over 1100 if you max it out with a few expanders.
